194751027Collins 1947. 8vo. First Edition with endpaper maps; grey cloth gilt back a very good bright clean copy in unclipped lightly browned dustwrapper. VERY SCARCE INDEED IN THIS CONDITION. Marshal of the Royal Air Force Sir Arthur 'Bomber' Harris 1892-1984 was Commander in Chief Bomber Command from 1942 when he replaced Richard Peirse to 1945. Based on his experiences in London during the Blitz Harris developed a belief in intensive incendiary bombing as a means not merely of destroying cities but of undermining civilian morale. His new concept of 'area bombing' was put into practice with the first 'thousand-bomber' raid on Cologne in May 1942. Like most large-scale innovations this was a major gamble but its undoubted success colossal damage inflicted for the loss of forty aircraft paved the way for Britain's bombing strategy for the rest of the war. Eventually this policy which remains controversial to this day brought him into direct conflict with both Portal and Churchill but Harris pursued it doggedly until the surrender. Arguably the greatest RAF commander of WWII Harris was an outstanding and inspiring leader achieving almost iconic status among staff and crews alike. After the war he refused a peerage but accepted a baronetcy in 1953. Enser p.65. Collins, hardcover

1945193595London: Air Ministry c. 1945. Harris's restricted report on Bomber Command operations Classified "secret" this duplicated-typescript copy of the final portion of Harris's comprehensive report was likely produced contemporary to the first formal publication of Harris's report in print. Part V contains statistics and graphs and the series of lengthy appendices discuss the development of bombing techniques and armaments tactics and radio countermeasures sea mining and the operational use of meteorology. Harris's report unequivocally justified the ferocious bombing of Germany in the second half of the war. It was printed in letterpress in January 1946 in a run of 100 copies bound in blue cloth. Three of these are now held institutionally Imperial War Museum National Archives and Rice University. In this typescript version the "Summary of Air Ministry Directives" is listed as a sixth distinct part but in the letterpress publication they became Appendix L. The graphs are the same as those issued in January 1946 with the exception of 5A which is a photographic reproduction of an earlier version on graph paper. Folio 330 x 210 mm. With 13 folding tables all but 1 in colour; issued without graphs XI and XIV. Text in duplicated typescript. Original black half cloth springback binder dark green sides front cover with printed title label covers with marbled linings. Binding lightly worn contents page with listing for parts I-IV struck through with green pencil: very good. hardcover
