Commemorates the bestowal on the Regiment of the privilege of marching through the streets of the city [York] with bayonets fixed, colours flying and band playing. With the privately printed Regimental Privilege slip loosely inserted. A RARE SURVIVAL. Not recorded by Sutcliffe or White.

This classic memoir by the commander of 1 Airborne Division remains the best eye-witness account of the most poignant (and by far the most documented) airborne operation in history. Includes transcripts of the airborne corps instruction, confirmatory notes of GOC's verbal orders, glider and unit allotments and 1 Airborne Div OOB. THE ORIGINAL EDITION IS VERY SCARCE IN THIS CONDITION. Enser, p.36.

The astonishing, if gruelling, account of the 25th (Navvies) Battalion of The Middlesex Regiment in WWI, and THE ONLY BRITISH UNIT HISTORY IN THE RUSSIAN INTERVENTION. 'Ward's story really belongs in the main to the 'after-the-war' period in Russia. He gives an interesting account of Admiral Koltchak, whom he admired, and shows how insuperable were the difficulties which that unfortunate patriot had to face. It is now beginning to be recognised that Koltchak was, with the possible exception of Wrangel, far and away the ablest of the White [Russian] commanders. For the rest, his [Ward's] story is one of gallantry and endurance in frightful conditions displayed by troops for the most part of a low physical category' (Falls). 'In 1915 [Ward] raised the 25th Navvies Battalion, which was then ordered to the Far East and ultimately to Siberia to support Admiral Koltchak.' (Sutcliffe). Very scarce. One of the great regimental histories. The set comprises Vol. I: 1794-1816; Vol. II: 1816-1898. Including the 75th Regiment 1787-1881. The first editions of these two volumes were published in 1901 and 1903 respectively. The first two volumes constitute a set in themselves. A third volume by Gardyne followed in 1939, and fourth, fifth and sixth volumes by Falls (1958), Miles (1961) and A.D. Gardyne (1972). White, p.120.

The author served with this famous Canadian regiment throughout WWII. In 1940 it served briefly in France, returned to the UK for further training, landed in Sicily in July 1943, fought on the Italian mainland until early 1945 and then took part in the final battles for Germany.
