Also included is a list and location of principal Confederate prisons. "A sergeant’s journal of captivity reworked by the editor; very bitter over deliberate cruelty to prisoners but also gives facts tending to show the opposite." -- Nevins Civil War Books page 195. The author a Sergeant-Major in the 16th Connecticut Volunteers recounts his experiences at Andersonville Georgia and Florence South Carolina. He describes brutal conditions frequent deaths challenges to daily survival escape attempts and moments of humanity. This colorful detailed account is one of the best first-person descriptions of captivity in a Confederate pow camp. Front cover has three small colored spots gilt flaked off the spine but readable small label removed from the front pastedown sheet light wear to the fore-edge of the title page else internally clean and tight. 96173Very Good. These two orders are printed on the rectos of two adjoined leaves as folded. Versos are blank. Modest browning and wear. 31 cm. A General Court Martial had been convened on Sept. 6 at which John D. Jaques Surgeon of the First Regiment was convicted and adjudged to be cashiered. Jaques appealed to the commander who disapproved to some portion of the conviction whereupon General Steddiford revived the court and ordered it to re-assemble and review its proceedings. We don't know why Jaques was being court martialed why the review was ordered or the ultimate resolution of the proceedings against Jaques. unknown

You as Captain are at liberty to appoint the non-commissioned Officers of your own Company. No man is to be inlisted above 45 years of age or under five feet four inches; but well made growing Lads between 16 and 18 years of age may be taken at five feet three inches. The Pay of the Officers to commence from the dates of their Commissions. each Serjeant Corporal Drummer and Private have an allowance of Three halfpence per day of Bread-money;. each Recruit must have the following articles viz Two Shirts; Two pair of Shoes Two pair fine Hose; A Bonnet and Feathers; A black Stock; A Haversack; all of which to be purchased out of his Bounty;.
