Propaganda Leaflet 2-J-1 - Japanese Soldier In A Rowboat.1944. 8.25" x 5.25". One of the earliest Army leaflets dropped on Japanese troops is 2-J-1 entitled Japanese soldier sitting in a rowboat. The U.S. did not want to antagonize the Japanese so they used a technique they call soft-soaping to point out their predicament without appearing to gloat. The leaflet depicts an unhappy Japanese soldier alone in a rowboat near a barren island. It appears that the 6th Army liked the leaflet so much that they reprinted it and used it in their section of the Philippines. The text on the front translates to: "Left Behind With Only Small Boats an Army Chokes With Grief!" The back is all text and says in part: "Soldiers and Officers of Japan. We wish neither to insult nor make fun of you. Because at Bataan and Corregidor we faced the same miserable conditions you are now facing we cannot but sympathize with you Where are the ships that brought you and your supplies here Where is the Navy which escorted your transportsWhen ships can no longer reach an island garrison do you not realize for the first time that the island has been abandoned" 3. Propaganda Leaflet - 2-F-1 MacArthur Has Returned.1944. 10.5" x 8" Notice that it is MacArthur that has returned and not thousands of American soldiers and sailors. Still the General apparently believed that the Filipinos reacted to his own charisma and personality and perhaps he was correct. The two page bi-fold above shows MacArthur saluting on the front and debarking from an aircraft on the back. There are three black and white pictures of him inside the booklet. It appears that all the F leaflets were to the Filipinos after the American landing. The front of the leaflet depicts General MacArthur saluting. The back of the leaflet depicts the general stepping off an aircraft with the text: "General MacArthur steps out of a plane at an advance airbase somewhere in New Guinea." When the bi-fold is opened there are three black and white photographs inside the leaflet with MacArthur on a warship walking down a Philippine road and in a landing craft. The text is: "General MacArthur keeps his pledge. When General MacArthur left Corregidor under orders from President Roosevelt to proceed to Australia and organize the offensive against Japan his last words were I shall return. From that moment his one driving ambition has been to get back to the Philippines to drive out the Japanese and to restore the legitimate government of the Philippines. Today General MacArthur is back in the Philippines. He has returned as he promised. His great task is now entering its final phase. The forces under his command are assaulting the Japanese invaders throughout the Philippines. With these forces General MacArthur will accomplish the liberation of the Filipino people. This leaflet bears no code but my files show that it was 3F1. Some of the text is: President Osmena elected to high office by the Filipino people at the last popular elections held in this country has returned to the Philippines with General MacArthur. He and the members of his government with the complete support and backing of the American government come to assist in the restoration of your freedom. There is a photograph of President Osmena on the back in front of a CBS microphone addressing the Philippine people. The title is: "The Need for Unity". 5. Propaganda Leaflet 4-F-6 - The Yanks Have Landed On your Island.1944. "8.5" x 5.25". Leaflet depicts American soldiers walking ashore. It was prepared on 23 September 1944 to be used on islands where the Americans land from D-Day to D plus 5. The back text is in English and warns the Filipinos to stay away from Japanese military objectives and ends with: "Remember: Planes bombs and shells cannot tell a friend from a foe." 6. Propaganda Leaflet 3-J-1 - Island Hopping.1944. 8.25" x 5.25". Army Psychological Warfare Branch leaflet 3-J-1 seems to be the first in a series of leaflets that depicts Japanese soldiers left behind as General MacArthur advanced using his "Island-Hopping" campaign. Other similar leaflets depicted a lone Japanese soldier standing on an island 6-J-1 or a lone Japanese soldier watching a battle take place on a nearby island 22-J-1. These leaflets all had the basic same message. You are cut off and there will be no resupply. There will be no food no water no ammunition and no reinforcements. Some of the text on this leaflet is: "Before you reach this miserable state which is more than men ought to endure so far from home we want you to keep something in mind. Those who choose to come to an honorable understanding with us will find that we treat them as human beings not as enemies. We shall hold it a duty to see that they gave clothing food shelter and medical care." This leaflet does not ask the Japanese soldier to surrender. To save face it simply asks that he reach an "honorable understanding" with the Americans. 7. Propaganda Leaflet 1bJ1 - I Surrender.1944. 9.5" x 13" Leaflet with English text on front and Japanese text on reverse. Some of the message is: "Officers and Soldiers of Japan The battle you have put up has our sincere respect. We are quite confident however that victory will be ours as in past operations. We have this confidence because of our officers and men our superior scientific equipment our artillery and our bombing. When you left home many thousands of miles away you thought the Japanese would win. You have since learned that your planes and equipment are no match for those of the Allied forces. 1972WRCAM55575Various places in Vietnam 1972. 145 photographs all but thirteen in color most approximately 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches. Majority of photographs mounted on black paper stock with non-archival adhesive tape some photos retain remnants of tape at corners. Some images a bit faded but generally in very good condition. A tremendous collection of photographs depicting the personal life and military service of an unidentified African-American soldier with the last name "Williams" serving in Vietnam during the war and with numerous family photographs at home. The majority of the photographs are undated but those that are dated place the collection roughly between 1968 and 1972. Other identifying characteristics in the photographs indicate that the soldier was likely part of the United States Air Force 93rd Security Police Squadron which provided security and air base defense during the Vietnam War. There is a photograph of Williams leaning against the sign for the 93rd SPS dormitory. <br> <br> Notable in the sixty or more photographs from the soldier's time in Vietnam are images from an unidentified American Air Force base depicting soldiers in the barracks a mess hall and fraternization among soldiers; additional photographs show a heavily-armed Williams manning a bunker holding an EBONY magazine posing with a South Vietnamese soldier in an urban setting and staring strikingly at the camera wearing machine gun ammunition and a hand grenade. A series of thirteen images were taken at "Le Van Loc" a popular Vietnamese night club located on the Tan Son Nhut Air Base near Saigon indicating Williams may have been stationed at or near that base. Personal photographs show individuals of varying ages presumably family members who appear alone or in groups and at times are photographed with Williams. Several of these photographs feature children presumably Williams' at home and at an Elmhurst School function. Pocket-sized photograph album commemorating the members of the 604th Ordnance Ammunition Company a unit of African-American soldiers who served as battle support in Italy during World War II. A small line of text on the rear wrapper reads: "Photographs by 1st Lt. E.D. Biggerstaff Jr." Edward D. Biggerstaff Jr. was the commanding officer of the 604th Ordnance Ammo. Company evidenced by his photograph in the album; he is also pictured with the other white company officers in a separate photograph. <br> <br> The album opens with a photograph of the entrance to the company's "Bivouac Area" and an image of the Villa Traxler in Nugola Italy which is captioned as "Occupied by 604th Ordnance Ammunition Company." Then following the images of Biggerstaff and the senior officers the album features a series of photographs depicting the African-American junior or non-commissioned officers and personnel beginning with First Sergeant Leroy Crosby. After Crosby's photograph the album includes group photographs of Crosby with his other five staff sergeants; the company headquarters personnel; the depot office personnel gathered around a small cannon; kitchen staff; the motor pool with a separate photograph of their vehicles; separate group pictures of the first second and third magazine platoons; the service and supply section; the guard mount; and a photograph of the remaining members of the company who did not appear in the other images. Especially useful in this album are the captioned tissue guards before each photograph which identify each soldier by name and rank. <br> <br> The album was likely made by or at the behest of commanding officer Edward D. Still good. A panoramic photo of one of the first African- American training units formed at Camp Lee now Fort Lee Virginia in late 1941. The recruits are divided by platoon and accompanied by their predominantly white officers with names of all printed below. More than two hundred trainees are shown and named. The 9th Quartermaster Training Regiment was the first African-American training unit to form at Camp Lee in late 1941 just before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The soldiers in this photograph likely entered the army in early 1942 and were nearing the end of their training when the image was taken. They soon would be deployed overseas or around the United States working to store transport and distribute food fuel clothing and ammunition necessary to supply the army's combat divisions. Camp Lee was established during World War I as a training site and during World War II was expanded to provide training for quartermasters and related support specialists. Although some black soldiers saw combat during World War II the vast majority were assigned to all-black quartermaster and engineer units providing logistical support and distributing supplies and ammunition to troops around the world. President Truman finally desegregated the armed forces in 1948 with Executive Order 9981 and the last all-black unit was disbanded in 1954. <br> <br> African-American World War II Army panoramas are scarce in the marketplace. 1926List302Massachusetts 1926. Ink on paper 18 ½ x 23 ½ inches. Excellent. Alexander Johnson an African-American musician from New Bedford enlisted in the army at age 16 and was believed for some time to be the first African-American musician in the Union Army. He mustered into mustered into Company "C" of the Massachusetts 54th Infantry under Colonel Shaw. The 54th Massachusetts was the second African-American regiment in the Union army formed only after the 1st Kansas Colored Volunteer Infantry. New Bedford had a large population of escaped slaves and African-Americans from the city enrolled heavily. Johnson had been orphaned at a young age and his adopted father William Henry Johnson strongly advocated for African-American enrollment in the Union army a factor which most likely played a part in the young Alex's enrollment at age sixteen. <br /> <br /> Johnson served in the 54th for the duration of the war including the bloody charge of Fort Wagner on Morris Island on July 18 1863. The 54th lost 272 of its 600 men on that day including Colonel Shaw. Johnson's musical acumen was widely acknowledged and he became known - erroneously it would later turn out - as being the first African-American musician in the Union army. After the conflict ended Johnson settled in Worcester organizing a band called "Johnson's Drum Corps" and instructing young musicians. <br /> <br /> Augustus St. Gaudens famously erected a monument to the 54th at the Massachusetts state house. Johnson visited the monument at a G.A.R. event in 1904 and noted to others in attendance the similarity between his own likeness and that of the drummer boy in St. Gaudens monument. This proved to be pure coincidence as St. Gaudens had based his work on models but the idea persists to this day that Johnson is the drummer boy pictured.<br /> <br /> Johnson painted this memorial to the Ladies of the G.A.R. in 1926 at age seventy-nine four years before his death. The painting shows two birds with banners reading "Friendship" and "Loyalty" over a heart reading "Honor the Boys / of / 1861-1865" with a book open to pages reading "Mrs Elizabeth / Towne / Merry Christmas / and A / Happy New Year" and "President / Of / Gen. / Chas. Deven / Circle / No / 30 / Ladies of the GAR / 1926." Most of his comrades-in-arms were likely dead at this point and we find no record of Elizabeth Towne. A wonderful folk art memorial to the 54th Massachusetts well preserved and attractive in very good condition overall with light normal wear. <br /> <br /> <br /> References: Coddington Ronald. 18641553New York 1864. Very good. 2pp. printed form on a quarto sheet completed in manuscript. Old folds. Light wear and soiling slight chipping and separation at folds. A printed muster roll form for McDougall General Hospital in New York near Fort Schuyler recording men from the 39th Regiment of Maryland Colored Troops convalescent there. Two men are listed Jarvis Griffin and Philmon Thompson both privates. There are no remarks as to why the two men were admitted to hospital though both received clothing while there worth $20.85 and $30.46 respectively. The 39th U.S. Colored Infantry was organized in Baltimore on March 22 1864 and was under the command of Col. Ozora P. Stearns. The two men were admitted on May 31st about ten weeks after the company was formed and on its early engagements campaigning from the Rapidan River to the James River in Virginia and guarding supply trains for the Army of the Potomac. An extensive and profusely-illustrated regimental history of the 43rd Signal Heavy Construction Battalion an African-American unit that fought in Germany during the last two years of World War II. This history of the battalion was partially written and edited by African-American members of the unit serving as associate editors. It was printed in occupied Germany in November 1945 almost certainly in a small edition for distribution among members of the battalion - the concluding section of the volume has a section for "autographs." Included is a detailed timeline of the unit's activities from February 1944 to early October 1945 along with a technical history pictures of the all-white officer corps a detailed background of the 43rd and a short account of individual recognitions. The three most detailed sections of the work give in-depth accounts of the Headquarters section Company A and Company B respectively. These sections are also full of images of the soldiers in training and include roster lists. <br> <br> The 43rd Signal Heavy Construction Battalion was formed at Camp Crowder Missouri on February 7 1944. The battalion served in four separate campaigns in Europe: northern France the Rhineland Ardennes-Alsace and central Europe spending most of 1945 in Germany. The battalion was responsible for constructing communications support throughout Europe laying or hanging hundreds of miles of wire and cable during their time in the war. The battalion was inactivated on May 28 1946 while in Germany but was reactivated and redesignated for service in Vietnam in 1966. Oblong folio album string-tied; leatherette boards front embossed and color stamped. Manuscript captions on album leaves; photos in corner mounts. A bit of soiling and wear to album leaves fading to some captions and a few images. An album of over 100 striking vernacular photographs taken and compiled by Corporal Herbert Farris of Lexington Kentucky that document his World War II service with the 39th Air Depot in Alaska. The men were involved in the maintenance and repair of Army Air Force aircraft and it appears that Farris operated a refueling truck. The unit was stationed in both Anchorage and in the Aleutian Islands and the album appears to include images from both of these areas. One image depicts the "wind indicator at Amchitka" an island in the far western Aleutians home to an Army Air Force Base constructed during the war. The album also includes many other images showing a remote base with bare bones conditions likely Amchitka or a nearby island. There are photos of the "first mess hall" a tent the "second mess hall" a series of huts a "barber shop" contained in a tent a shower tent a theater quonset hut barracks control tower and wooden walkways. The album also includes many images of aircraft including P-40s B-25 bombers and C-67 transports as well as photos of the refueling truck its operation and its crew. Finally there are images of "training planes" used for practice likely in Anchorage as well as some other images that appear to have been taken in Anchorage such as river gold dredgers and more permanent-looking buildings. Sold as is. <br/><br/>J.M. de Beaufort was a war correspondent for the London Daily Telegraph and New York American attached to the Belgian Army during World War I. De Beaufort described his wartime experiences in his 1917 book Behind the German Veil: A Record of a Journalistic War Pilgrimage. In this journal's inner front cover de Beaufort wrote: "Never to be forgotten of my days with the Belgian Army 1914-1915 J.M. de Beaufort". The journal is written and drawn in various hands and languages and mainly involves the areas around Furnes in Belgium circa October-December 1914. At that point the Belgian Army had only recently entered the war and was being routed by the German Army's superior numbers. Belgium's high command cleverly devised a plan to flood the vicinity of Furnes to keep the Germans at bay. There are several fairly detailed hand-drawn diagrams in pen colored pencil and pencil of the flooding plan. The photographs in the journal mainly depict Belgian and French soldiers; de Beaufort is visible in several. One image shows two unexploded bombs with "aeroplane bombs" written on its verso in pencil beside de Beaufort's note about how they landed close to his room in Furnes. Other photographs show bombed-out buildings. There are cartoonsmostly anti-Germandrawn at various points throughout. De Beaufort also known as Count de Beaufort was quite an elusive figure. His real name was Uilenbroek and he was a Dutchman thought to have been a deserter. He came to Chicago in 1909 married a steel magnate's daughter and entered show business. This unusual album contains 400 original b. w. photographs & and is an historic photographic record of American military deployment showing Dough-boys in China probably from the U.S. Army's 2nd. Battalion 15th. infantry per the flag and insignia found on a group formation photograph. A minority are with written captions by and large taken by the person who made the album also enhanced with a small percent of professional Chinese photos some of which have in-negative captions. There are ca. 3 or so photos missing else completely filling 32 pages or 64 sides one on the inside back cover. The inside of the front cover has five attractive period color luggage type adverts from various hotels: Hotel Lankershim & Coast Line Military & Naval Hotel San Francisco Cal; The Court Hotel Tientsin North China; Grand Hotel des Wagons Litz; Astor House Hotel Ltd. Tientsin. The album begins with photos of a Chinese playing a Pi-pa snake skin banjo then there are three other photos: first two show a Chinese military camouflage train engine from which a Yank soldier in his campaign hat descends and a long train of cars with a large howitzer mounted upon one last shows French troops at parade rest with their rifles and white gloves and crested helmets with anchors naval or marines with others in the background with some officers. The next two pages show Chinese coolies swing a basket from the creek top water a field a mother suckling her baby with her family at the farm a large water tower in the wet slums and a group of Doughboys at attention in formation they wear boots leggings chrome World War I type dress helmets a rifle back pack with bayonet cartridge pouch belts with green wool hip-length jackets. The opposite page shows another view of the Chinese military train a pair of large mounted guns on an armored train car. To the right is a Chinese officer pointing to a large pierced hole in the train with a foreign engineer peering out from the small window. The train sports the Republic of China flag with a Chinese military unit flag painted on the side. Another view shows a group of abandoned Chinese coffins that went to the dogs; a group of soldiers in garrison caps at attention with fixed bayonets as the officers salute someone near the person taking the photo some Chinese officers also present. They all mug for the camera with a good number of U.S. Army or Marine officers behind three desks. At this point we find a few photos with penned captions: "One of China's Department Stores it shows a bird vendor; Peanut Gambler a mountain of P-nuts; Chinese Shimboo photo of the office and maker of the album and his Chinese officer friend ; "A Chinese Taxi" shows him in a Rickshaw "Me and the boy friend 11/3/28" shows a tiny goat cart carrying a child's coffin with a Chinese man. This penned date gives substantial proof of the date range of the entire album which was placed about the center of the whole work. The next page shows two more penned captions: "Chinese cavalry" and "Note mud house and fence" shows two Chinese officers on horse-back and a very very poor house with very starved animals. The next shows six Chinese undercover men two each holding a Chinese being readied for execution; and a very grizzly photo of a Chinese officer actually executing a Chinese man with his pistol who is seated on a rock: the photo captures the action as the shot blows away the mans brains. Behind the execution scene is a crowd of American soldiers in campaign hats and Chinese military officers who are witness to the event. More views of Chinese street life vendors pullers haulers & horse carts religious icons and a stunning Chinese roofed gate more Chinese troops on the move via train with a very horrible view of a large number of dead Chinese in the muddy filthy waters by a bridge. Homeless Chinese at a "soup kitchen" war refugees hauling their belongings house boat street barbers a group of 7 photos by the ocean. They show American soldiers at leisure looking at Chinese fishermen nets naked fishermen hauling in a net of fish to the beach a burning waterfront village the jetty where several large American transport ships are at anchor and a great assembly of Yankee soldiers on the beach with duffel bags and their gear at the railhead. The last photo shows a great number of various whisky bottles lined up for display. More photos show a coffin maker large coffin basket seller and "chow" sellers on the street. A military formation of 100's of either Scottish or Irish soldiers with fixed bayonets marching down the main street before the "RNC Electricity Dept." below which is a very long line of British soldiers on one side of the street opposite from a good number of American soldiers who are on the side of the street a British Union Jack flies over a castle-like structure this is clearly some kind of grand military parade. More photos of the Great Wall the military parade and army chaplains with an Australia flag flying over another castle tower. Chinese river scene with large numbers of native boats in a canal a beggar's camp with straw -mat tents a canal crossing ferry for people a photo of a U.S. officer stand on top a wooden coffin for a closer look. A group of very young Chinese boys posed near the railroad; one is so poor that he has no clothes at all and is in nude. A large group of Nationalist Chinese soldiers marching along a street one classic photo of a single American soldier on guard standing at attention as stands vigil on a barbed-wire barrier his rifle at fixed bayonet. A group of five Chinese young "ladies" who pose for the camera who seemed NOT to be bewildered by the photographer they look like "Sing-song girls" hookers who entertained the U.S. troops. Chinese Buddhist priests in white robes with shaved heads a great gate to Peking Shanghai harbor views shanty huts captured Chinese criminal or traitor guarded by Chinese soldiers train car full of rifles more Chinese soldiers on trains marching in formation on the road. And a good photo of several American officers: one with a whip posing for the camera in garrison hat. Chinese bivouac and American soldiers with bullet and pouches for ammo with rifles at parade rest. More barbed-wire barricades Chinese & British soldiers armored train-mounted gun. More Chinese prisoners traitors being executed heads hoisted on power poles in baskets as a form of public warning and display for other would-be traitors. An American tent bivouac camp at the train yard two more public exec executions by beheading at the moment of loosing one's head an executed dead man lying in the street. Photos of Peking's Forbidden City a Chinese hung to death from a tree a Yank soldier in overalls carries a Chinese bamboo "yoke" with two baskets and smokes a pipe while Chinese look on and laugh. Two photos of lines of Rickshaws waiting for passengers. One comic photo with negative caption: "Find the Chinaman;" it shows two American soldiers sitting among Chinese. Nice shot of the Summer Palace Peking and a U.S. soldier riding in a Rickshaw. The very last photo inside the back cover shows the whole battalion dressed up wearing their chrome helmets standing at attention in formation for a classic and most historic memorial photograph. Their commanding officer is front and center; all have their rifles ammo belts and very polished boots with back packs. They could be standing in the Tientsin American Consulate compound grounds. Followed by a few other photos of Chinese a Chinese soldier et al. This work shows the typical things seen in China during this period of political and military chaos. The feuding war lords and political parties at war; the landing of American military to protect American diplomatic interests. Support & assistance given to the Americans and other foreign military groups by the Nationalist Chinese army. The desperate situation of the tragic Chinese people caught in the grips of upheaval and the summary punishment of traitors in a public display of the swift and ruthless law of China. A riveting and most compelling true record of a U.S. military officer's sojourn to and deployment in China. THE PHOTOGRAPHER AND THE SIZE OF PHOTOGRAPHS: This is not a professional group of photographs but there a very small amount which were obviously purchased by the maker of the album and inserted. The vast majority are his personal photographs these again are obvious to anyone who looks at the album. This is an excellent example of private work of an unknown American Army officer stationed in China during a very chaotic period. He was interested in recording for posterity his experiences and the sights that he saw while on duty. We thank him for giving us privy to this slice of American and Chinese military history. SIZE OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS: The size varies considerably sizes in cm.: the smallest are 8 x 5 most are 14 x 9 3 larger photos 24.5 x 18 and the last 30 x 10. CONDITION OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS: These are original period photos they are all very clear sharp images no fading and in excellent condition. They have been corner mounted. RARITY: Photographic albums of this period in China are NOT commonly found; one made by an American Army officer stationed in China at this time is exceptionally unusual and RARE ! This is a charming primary source with a large number of clean & sharp images taken by an actual participant in this historic period of China. The officer and photographer of these photographs shared for posterity his keen insight and view of these events. 1861D11147Westhampton likely Massachusetts 1861-1864. Ephemera. Fine. Group of 13 manuscript letters black ink in tidy cursive addressed to "Hattie" who is perhaps in Springfield. Most are signed "Mother" one the last and only letter in pencil is signed "Sister Anna" and all are dated 22 April 1861 - "Sabbath Eve" May 1864 and located in Westhampton. A few are somewhat faint but still legible -- otherwise condition is fine. <br/><br/>An interesting group of letters quintessential for their reports on the health of seemingly everyone in town and for their concern with the American Civil War. "I am taking a great interest in war matters feel curious to read the daily paper think the North will come off conquered and I hope without shedding Oceans of blood" she remarks in the earliest letter in the group. Some remarks from later letters include: "We heard that Bolton and Alvin Clark were sick at Annapolis and that Henry Smith is a prisoner at Richmond. Mother England blusters about terribly doesn't she Hope she isn't going to declare war against us."; "Our people have had no letters since the battle are expecting some daily. Edward Coyt of Huntington was one of the wounded. After the battle of Roanoke he wrote to his folks he'd seen enough of war."; "Our men A. P. Bridgman Davis Burt Bartholt Bissell Edward Delany Charles Land Henry Sulliver a fellow living at Capt Custs and an Irishman. So you see we send seven married men."; "Frank Hule was killed in the battle at Murfeesboro Dec 31st by the first fire of the Rebs"; plus a few more comments and names.
