Broadside issued in 1941 by the Emergency Committee to Stop Deportations to the Sahara Desert articulating an urgent appeal against the forced deportation of anti-fascist refugees by the Vichy French government during the early years of the Second World War. Written by Edward K. Barsky a leading figure in the Joint Anti-Fascist Refugee Committee the document calls on American citizens to intervene diplomatically by contacting both the French Embassy in Washington D.C. and the U.S. Secretary of State. The broadside documents contemporary awareness of mass deportations and forced labor policies under the Pétain regime describing plans to remove large numbers of refugees-including veterans of the Spanish Civil War members of the International Brigades and political exiles from across Europe-to labor camps connected to the Trans-Saharan Railroad. The text situates these actions within broader patterns of repression highlighting the targeting of anti-fascist populations and the international composition of those affected. 1945190883East of the Rhine: Headquarters XVIII Corps Airborne Office of the Corps Commander APO 109 U.S. Army; Reproduced by 3060 Engr. Topo. Co. Corps around late April 1945. The last airborne operation of the Second World War Copy number 70 of an unstated but presumably small distribution classified "secret". As part of the advance on Germany Varsity saw American British and Canadian troops parachute onto the eastern bank of the Rhine and establish a deep bridgehead for a larger-scale Allied crossing of the river. The contents dated 25 Aprill 1945 comprise a 12-page report and shorter summary both issued in the name of Major-General Matthew Ridgway commander of XVIII corps from August 1944. These detail the planning and active phrases of the operation attributing Varsity's success not to "the remarkable circumstance of having events develop according to schedule but rather by the thousands of individuals who through bold and aggressive action by tireless and intelligent efforts caused those events to occur. It may well serve as a model for future airborne operations" pp. 11-12. The full report is appended with a troop list correct as of 25 March 1945 and the seven large maps record the overall objectives of the operation and the situation at the close of each day. We have traced copy 60 at the HQ Donovan Research Library Fort Benning Georgia. Quarto 350 x 220 mm. With 9 leaves of duplicated typescript all but one printed both sides wire-stitched top-left; 7 folding colour plans. All bound through punch-holes between manila card cover as issued front cover lettered in black corps insignia in blue. Folder with some wear and marking leaves evenly browned plans well-preserved: a very good copy. unknown

Back cover contains advertisement listing the content of the publisher's Patriotic Glee Book "Consisting of Nearly all the best Songs Choruses Glees & Quartetts that have been written since the commencement of the War." In Very Good Condition: disbound; 5-cm. tear from lower edge of second leaf not touching music; soiling and foxing; otherwise solid. This song by H.C. Work is very scarce. H.M. Higgins unknown

Henry Howard Houston Woodward 1896-1918 was from a prominent Philadelphia family attended Yale University but left school early in 1917 at enlist in the American Ambulance Field Service. After serving in France several months Woodward transferred in July 1917 to the Franco-American Aviation Corps. After training he flew with Escadrille Spad 94 and was killed in action near Montdidier April 1 1918. This is a presentation copy signed by his father George Woodward Yale 1887 and presented to Charles O. Scoville dated March 1920. Scoville was probably Rector of Trinity Episcopal Church in New Haven also a Yale class of 1887 member. No marks in book binding tight one fold-out plate separated at the fold. The edges of the soiled covers are heavily chipped with several short tears and the spine is splitting. 14 pages. The edges of several pages are slightly chipped and there is a tear to the top edge of the pages. Good.</p><p>RARE.</p><p>The American publisher and politician Benjamin Wood 1820-1900 was the brother of U.S. Congressman and New York City Mayor Fernando Wood. He purchased the New York Daily News in 1860 but was shut down when the government suspended delivery through the postal system due to its support of the Confederacy. He was able to re-open the paper in 1863 and printed personal columns which the War Department claimed were used by Confederate spies to send coded communication to Confederate forces. Wood was elected as a U.S. Congressman from New York in 1861 serving until 1865. The author joined the RAAF and ended up in 152 Radar Unit where he was sent to New Guinea. His first stop was Finschhafen where the unit gave advance warning of Japanese raids. He was then moved north and took part in the Aitape landing in conjunction with the Americans. Again radar played a vital role in protecting the new airstrip and Aitape. Howes describes this as "Largely devoted to the opening and development of the far West from 1849 to 1860 in which Wistar played a conspicuous part before achieving fame and fortune in Pennsylvania" Wheat as a "Significant and engaging narrative by a man of great native attainments."
