Found on location at one of Mittelbau-Dora satellite camps. This metal Nazi Concentration Camp Slave Laborer Registration Card is hardly ever seen outside a display at a museum. These cards by definition never left the administration of the concentration camp in which they were kept and after liberation moved to the custody of the memorials and the museums. In contrast the "Arbeitsbuch" the personal identification document of the slave laborer was carried by inmates into their liberation and consequently is to be found in abundance on the market even generations later. The metal card was found on location in the soil of the former Mittelbau-Dora satellite camp. It is embossed with full details of a particular inmate. A special machine was needed for producing this. The writing remains almost perfectly legible. The general condition is good for an excavated item the corrosion patina dust and soil remained untouched and bear witness to the period. Reaching far beyond the value of a single collectible of Nazi memorabilia this artifact is an archeological piece of history and should be treasured as such. Boyd in his "Patriotic Envelopes of the Civil War: The Iconography of Union and Confederate Covers" dates it to August 1861. While most of the dozen feature naval ships prominently in the middle ground or foreground often with groups of soldiers not sailors! in various activities only two covers actually depicts naval battles at sea and the final three covers depict infantry soldiers battling with no apparent nautical references whatsoever. The photographs measure 3 1/2 x 2 1/2" with one measuring 9 x 6" Son of the emperor and one at 3 1/4 x 5 1/4" <br /> <br /> Some 200000 Italian troops invaded Ethiopia in October 1935 under the command of Italian Marshall Emilio de Bono who was soon replaced by General Pietro Badoglio by Mussolini. The Ethiopian forces were defeated and on May 7 1936 the Italian King Victor Emmanuel III was declared emperor and the provinces of Eritrea Italian Somaliland and Abyssinia Ethiopia were united to form the Italian province of East Africa. The fighting between Italian troops and rebels continued until 1939.<br /> <br /> The British war correspondent George Steer had reported on the use of chemical weapons by the Italian forces and subsequently had been deported together with Nebenzahl and other reporters on grounds of anti-Italian propaganda and espionage see original Reuters bulletin of May 18th 1935 enclosed in the album. The Reuters bulletin was covered by several newspapers including the New York Times mentioning Steers and Nebenzahl in their reporting. Several of the photographs included in this album show Isadore Nebenzahl.<br /> <br /> The photographs depict everyday life in Addis Abebba show Nebenzahl and his colleagues in business settings or on portrait photographs construction sites armed patrol activities gatherings and diner settings military personnel official events actions to extinguish fires friends and families airplanes during air raids victims and destruction from air raids army exercises refugees and troops train stations and ships the harbor and navy ships an airfield and scenarios on the ship after being expelled.<br /> <br /> The album includes a small set of documents and photographs loosely laid in:<br /> <br /> 1. Two official press credentials Service des la Presse for Isadore Nebenzahl both with passport photo of Nebenzahl<br /> <br /> 2. Illustrated throughout with a total of 74 mostly full-page b/w collotype images including stunning aerial photography.<br /> <br /> The photobook is divided into two parts: the first one is concerned with naval training while the second part deals with the unfolding course of the war being a record of Japanese successes from Pearl Harbor Malaya New Guinea and other parts of South East Asia. <br /> <br /> This is one of the very first publications to have show and extended pictorial account of the bombing of Pearl Harbor including a number powerful and dynamic images two of the images seen to be illustrations. Includes also numerous b/w Soviet-style photographic plates of naval guns battleships submarines and military planes as well as photographs of operations in China Java Borneo Philippines New Guinea and other areas in Southeast Asia. None of the images are credited to a particular photographer but included is work by Matsugi Fujio and possibly Kimura Ihei. January 12 1781. Hebron. This is a document signed by two Selectmen of Hebron: This may certify that Asher Merrell Jun. Served in Connecticut Line in the Continental Army in Col. Chandlers Regiment before the fifth of Jany 1780. c.DS. 1 pg. 6 x 8. March 10 1781. Hartford. A printed document indicating payment of Nine Pounds eight shillings & five pence as the payment due since January 5 1780 to Asher Merrell Junr Deceased and Paid to Asher Merrell Parent. These three documents reflect the documents certifying the death of Asher Merrell and his payment for his service in the Continental Army. Ensuring timely payment for casualties of war has long been a difficult task especially in the 18th and 19th centuries with limited records and overwhelmed governments. So a positive resolution in 14 months was relatively fortunate for Merrells family. Additionally Merrell fighting as an underaged soldier reflected a common occurrence in an era before verifiable birth certificates and the existence of a Committee of Boy Soldiers reflected such regularity. All three documents are in very good condition and unique windows into wartime bureaucracy during the American Revolution. The first is titled: "No. 26 Pay List for additional Subsistence etc to the officers in st. Philips Castle from 25 Dec. 1781 to 23 Feb. 1782." The second has written on the verso: " No. 136 Pay List to make up Subs. to Brevet Officer etc equal to the Rank where in they respectively serve in The Garrison of Fort St. Philips during the Siege Decemb. 24 1781 - Dollars 4350-50." These two officer pay lists are signed by each of the 36 and 44 listed officers. They're a wonderful souvenir of the siege and with a sample of every officer's signature a valuable source for further research. <br /> <br /> The five month Siege of Minorca August 19 1781 - February 5 1782 was a vital victory over England in the European theatre of the Revolutionary War. Throughout most of the eighteenth century English possession of the island was of real strategic importance from its deep-water harbor the Royal Navy could launch attacks against the Mediterranean fleets of Spain France and Italy. unknown

Wilcocks was a prominent patriot leader acting as Chairman of the Committee of Safety. The document mentions John Nixon who on July 8 made the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence. This copy has been inscribed on the front flyleaf to the American writer and navy lieutenant John Mason Brown by Stella Reading. Born Stella Isaacs 1894-1971 she was Marchioness of Reading and founder in 1938 of the Women's Voluntary Service a nationwide network of women working in civil defense and aiding in evacuations from target areas of German bombing. A Portuguese translation of General William Johnson's "Letter to the Governours of the Several Colonies who raised Troops on the Present Expedition" signed in the text "Wilhelmo Gonson." <br /> <br /> Not long after the commencement of the Seven Years' War Johnson was appointed British agent to the Iroquois. On 28 August 1755 he renamed Lac Saint Sacrement Lake George in honor of the British monarch and proceeded north as part of a four-pronged attack on the French specifically to capture the French-held Fort St. Frédéric at Crown Point. <br /> <br /> "It was not the greatest battle of the French and Indian War but it came when a victory was needed and the results were momentous. It retrieved both the glory and morale so badly depleted when Braddock fell at the forks of the Ohio the previous July. It blunted a French drive which menaced Albany and the northern frontier set up a new English outpost in that area and the capture of a distinguished French general Dieskau was triumph for the victors and humiliation for the enemy" Hamilton.<br /> <br /> The publication of this letter was of course a remarkable source of propaganda for the English and boosted Johnson's career signficantly. The letter was reprinted in London an engraved plan of the battle was produced as well as portrait. This Lisbon printing is however very rare and little known. Stevenson born 1840 was an American journalist in Pennsylvania who after service in the Union Army during the Civil War was appointed by Abraham Lincoln vice consul to the American Consul in Sheffield England a post he held until 1866 after which he headed west and resumed newspaper work in Colorado. DS 3pp lettersheet 8¼" X 13½" Sheffield Great Britain 12 February 1864. Addressed to R.M. Stevenson. Very good. On blue stationery a large group of makers of renowned "Sheffield steel "sign this letter to the new American consul. "In reply to your enquiries" it begins "we the undersigned Merchants and Manufacturers in Sheffield and the Neighborhood beg to say that your Consular Business has invariably been attended to with promptness and despatch and to express our entire satisfaction with your existing arrangements for the discharge of your official duties and also with the attention we have received from Messrs. Branson & Sonwith whom we have every confidence." It continues "We further beg to say that we consider your office to be most centrally and conveniently situated for the despatch of Consular Business having been used for that purpose for a great number of years and that you could not meet with an office in a more suitable Locality." The bottom this of this page is then signed by twenty persons and/or firm names the second leaf is signed by another twenty-one persons and/or firms and the third leaf is signed by twelve persons and/or firms. The first signer on the first page is Thomas Jessop who adds "Mayor & Master Cutler." Jessop1804-87 serves as mayor of Sheffield 1863-64 and headed the steelmaking firm founded by his father -- on the second leaf he signs the firm's name "Wm Jessop & Sons." Nearby is John Brown 1816-96 who adds "Ex Mayor." Brown was Jessop's predecessor in 1862-63 an important industrialist known as "Father of the South Yorkshire Iron Trade." He signs a second time as "John Brown & Co." on behalf of the firm. Other signers on this page and the subsequent pages in no particular order include: John Martin & Co. major steel manufacturer and iron exporter; Charles Cammell & Co. iron works; Hargreaves Smith & Co. knives of all sorts; Sanderson Brothers steel manufacturers; Spear & Jackson signed twice woodworking tools manufacturers; John Wigfall & Co. butchers' knives; S & C Wardlow knife and razor manufacturers; George Wostenholm & Son cutlery table knives and forks pen and pocket knives; Wilson Hawksworth Ellison & Co. butchers' and skinning knives; Moulson Brothers saws and tool manufacturer; Charles Wild 1823-86 knife manufacturer; William Wild 1810-69 spring-knife manufacturer; Joshpe Rodgers & Sons cutlers and silversmiths; Jackson Newton knife manufacturer; Frederick Reynolds 1814-77 razor manufacturer; Thomas Firth & Sons steelmakers to the field armaments industry; and many more. Scholar Lee Tigner notes in a 2017 essay that "Sheffield Cutlers were in full swing supplying the American demand through the Civil War. Sheffield steel would have been found in most pockets on the battlefield at Gettysburg." David Hay elaborates in a 2005 article that "Geoffrey Tweedale. has shown how the American market was largely responsible for the remarkable expansion of the Sheffield crucible steel industry between the Napoleonic Wars and the American Civil War. In good years a third or more of Sheffield's steel output was sent across the Atlantic in addition to the vast trade in cutlery and edge tools. Large fortunes were made from the American trade by the steel firms of Sanderson Jessop Vickers Greaves Butcher and Cammell." American steel manufacturing was scattered and unreliable in the mod 19th-century and while the federal government made attempts to reduce its heavy reliance on Sheffield steel including an 1861 tariff on imported goods the need remained strong and the North remained anxious that their supply lines remain open. A steady supply of iron and steel knives and edges weapons and material for gun manufactuting and all manner of other military uses was crucial to the federal government; there was concern that Great Britain would side with the Confederacy who was in far greater need for imported goods than was the North -- and indeed at least one Sheffield steel firm had refused to sell materials to the U.S. government. When young consul Stevenson was appointed by Lincoln to the steel-producing center of England one of his main charges would have been to insure the smooth steady supply of materials to the federal government. This intriguing document appears to be the Sheffield steel industry's attempt to assure the American government that they would remain faithful supplies for the Union cause. A pencilled note in unknown hand on the blank fourth leaf "Testament of the Sheffield Manufactories & c to Management of Consular Agent" gives title to this remarkable document. unknown

1898100408<p>Possibly Florida circa 1898. 1898. Very good. - A lot of 15 original 3-1/8 inch by 5-3/8 inch black & white photographs of Spanish-American War soldiers at a training camp quite possibly in Florida. The images depict uniformed troops lined up for inspection as well groups of soldiers at rest and recreation or performing tasks amongst rows of tents or in the fields. Several images depict small groups or individuals posing for portraits and one of the images depicts a large row of horses likely those of the Rough Riders being tended by soldiers as others perform tasks around the camp. There is but minor soiling to the verso of the photos and the edges are very slightly curled and could easily be pressed down. Very good.</p><p>The Spanish-American War was fought between Spain and the United States from April 21 to August 13 1898 following the sinking of the U.S.S. Maine in Havana. The United States intervened in the Cuban Revolution and the Philippine Revolution the latter leading into the Philippine-American War. The war ended Spanish influence in the Americas Asia and the Pacific. The United States for its part gained sovereignty over Puerto Rico Guam and the Philippines.</p><p>The First U.S. Volunteer Cavalry known as the Rough Riders trained at Camp Riverside in San Antonio Texas then moved to Tampa Florida as they awaited embarkment for Cuba.</p> (Possibly Florida), circa 1898.
