SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR ON TITLE. Arguably the most ingenious POW escape of WWII it became a legend among servicemen long before its publication here in 1949. Two officers made home runs via a tunnel dug in the open air beneath a wooden vaulting horse. The scene was Stalag Luft III site of the 'Great Escape' later in the war and the story one of the true classics of WWII. Endlessly reprinted it has now achieved the status of popular folklore. 'I am sorry that we have missed each other on the occasions you have called. My time is much occupied & it is difficult to fix an hour before 6 P.M. on Sunday when if you can manage to call once more I shall be delighted to see you & revive our mutual recollections of old days.' According to Schreiner's entry in the Oxford DNB 'During the closure of the Vaal River drifts in 1895 he helped to commit the Cape to possible war by drafting the ultimatum to the Transvaal republic; but he was appalled by the Jameson raid later that year and soon afterwards broke finally with Rhodes. Although he opposed ending the British South Africa Company's charter he chaired the Cape select committee which condemned Rhodes's conduct. In 1897 he gave evidence at the raid inquiry in London.' A Salem Massachusetts lawyer Cogswell turned his law office into a recruiting station after learning the 6th Massachusetts had been attacked in Baltimore. He was first in last out in his Civil War service: In 24 hours he raised the first full company of the war Company C 2nd Massachusetts Volunteers and his brigade fought in the final battle of the war in Bentonville North Carolina. Brig Gen Commanding</i></p><p><b>Historical Background</b></p><p><b>William Cogswell</b> 1838-1895 was the son of the founder of the Massachusetts Republican party. He left Dartmouth College and spent two years on a square-rigger sailing around the world. When he returned he attended Harvard Law School and became a lawyer in Salem Massachusetts. When word reached Salem that the 6th Massachusetts had been attacked in Baltimore on April 19 1861 Cogswell turned his law office into a recruiting station and raised Company C of the 2nd Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry in 24 hours. He went on to become its commander.</p><p>Though the regiment suffered heavy losses Cogswell's company distinguished themselves well at the Battle of Antietam. Cogswell was promoted from company to regimental commander. During the Battle of Chancellorsville Cogswell was seriously wounded which resulted in his missing the Battle of Gettysburg where the 2nd Massachusetts lost another commander resulting in Cogswell's promotion to colonel. Cogswell was brevetted brigadier general on December 15 1864 and took command of the 3rd brigade 3rd division of the 20th Corps a part of the Army of Georgia that participated in Sherman's Savannah Campaign better known as the March to the Sea.</p><p><b>Condition</b></p><p>Very good. Lower half of left margin somewhat tattered affecting only one word go edge wear at upper right half some toning. Superb for display.</p>

Original brown cloth decorated in blind on the front and rear covers. Gilt stamping is still fairly bright and shiny. Subtitle: "With Piano Score Mainly to be Sung without Accompanimemt." Musical notation. Includes lyrics. This copy bears the embossed ownership stamp of the composer William Wolsieffer. Prof. Wolsieffer composed Abraham Lincoln's Funeral March c. 1865 for the piano forte a copy is in the Alfred Whital Stern Collection of Lincolniana. He also composed The United States Polka for the piano forte and respectfully dedicated it to the United States Fire Company of Philadelphia in the Keffer Collection of Sheet Music Penn Library Special Collections. Robertson Jr. in the Nevins bibliography rightfully calls "the encyclopedia for army life of the men in blue" and "equally authoritative work for the men in gray." Contains a choice autograph addition from Wiley 1906-80: Tipped to the front flyleaf of "Billy Yank" is a Typed Document Signed 1p 7¼" X 10½" Atlanta GA n.d. 5 December 1970 penned on verso in recipient's hand. Near fine. On letterhead of "The National Historical Society" listing Wiley as Chairman this letter is his annual mimeographed Christmas letter sent to friends and family a lengthy detailed single-spaced recording of the year's events: Trips across the country and overseas his wife's health issues etc. all quite interesting. On the generic "Dear Friends" opening Wiley crosses out "Friends" and pens "Arnold above this and at the letter's close he boldly signs "Bell" in blue ballpoint. Along the blank top margin he adds a handwritten postscript to recipient Arnold F. Gates 1914-93 noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar: "I enjoy your book column in Lincoln Herald. Congratulations on the well deserved degree! Hope our paths will cross again! Bell." A fairly nice set of these classics bearing a unique and interesting author letter. NEVINS I 178. The journalist and war correspondent Edwin Wildman writes to the American impressario and lecture manager James B. Pond recommending John E. Kellerd "Do you suppose you could use Mr. John E. Kellerd one of the leading exponents of Shakespearian Drama He is a man of character and and ability and is a good public speaker on this topic and upon the American stage ideals etc." He goes on to state that should Pond be interested he'd be "glad to send him over to call on you." Signed in full "Edwin Wildman". Folded vertically and horizontally for mailing the edges of the letter are chipped with a few short tears and pieces out from the right edge. Good.</p><p>The American journalist and diplomat Edwin Wildman 1867-1932 worked as a writer and war correspondent for Leslie's Weekly. He served as Vice and deputy consul general at Hong Kong special war correspondent to the Philippines and for the Hearst papers as Chief Asiatic and special commissioner with allied troops in the war with China from 1900-1901. He later served as president and editor of The Forum Magazine.</p><p>In the role of Hamlet the Shakespearian actor John E. Kellerd 1862-1929 broke the then existing record by a series of 102 consecutive performances in 1912-13.</p><p>The American lecture manager James Burton Pond 1889-1961 was the head of the Pond Lecture Bureau in New York City.
