1861152570Tientsin: 1861. Peace reigns in Tianjin after the bloody taking of the Taku Forts Highly engaging album the core of which comprises 26 sketches of Tientsin Tianjin in 1861 sketched by Ensign Francis Sadleir Brereton the year following the conclusion of the Second Opium War; with additional views of Singapore and Java. A unique visual record of Qing dynasty Tianjin as seen through the eyes of a young British army officer. Brereton 1838-1911 was commissioned ensign in the Royal North Gloucestershire Militia in November 1855 transferring to the 2nd Battalion 60th Rifles in December of the same year. Even among sharpshooters he was clearly a crack shot serving as inspector of musketry and winning both the Ladies' Purse and Challenge Prize. In 1857 he sailed with his battalion to South Africa. Following service in India during the Rebellion and in China during the Second Opium War he resigned his commission in 1865. He afterwards practised as an architect with his father-in-law Frederick Beeston then independently as an architect and surveyor. In 1889 he was elected to serve on the first London County Council. During the 18th century drawing masters were established at the military training centres at Woolwich Chatham High Wycombe and Addiscombe with the aim of instructing officer cadets in drawing and watercolour. Although there is no record of Brereton having studied in this way his sketchbook comprises an accomplished series of views very much in the tradition of the soldier-artist. In light of his subsequent career his interest in architectural detail is evident in a number of highly worked and painstaking sketches of temples and cityscapes occasionally employing dense hachures and some interesting compositional framing. To the modern eye they have a haunted quality reminiscent of the deserted vistas of Giorgio de Chirico. Views are in the main captioned on verso some at lower right of image all of Tientsin each dated 1861 and initialled unless otherwise noted: View of traditional roundhouses in a landscape "Head Quarters Square 2/60th Royal Rifles" "South West angle Tien Tsin Wall" "Mahomedan Temple" "Bell Temple" "Treaty Joss House" "Pallisir's Grave" Lieut. The album is accompanied by a typed letter by the popular boys author Lt.-Col. F. S. Brereton 1872-1957 reading in full: "These sketches were made by my father Ensign Frank Sadleir Brereton 2nd Battn. 60th Rifles when on service with his regiment in China 1861. The first action in which he was engaged was I believe an attack on the Taku Forts when he and a small command went over the side and waded ashore" undated personal stationery. A rare collection of fascinating original photographs capturing the first Western tourists in Israel and Israeli captured territories approximately a month after the Six-Day War in 1967 by Dutch journalist and photographer Bianca Maria Dony. The 44 photos in the album show the passenger ship SS Pegasus soldiers local people in the streets of Jerusalem and other cities an early war monument checkpoints destroyed military vehicles and other remnants of the war. The album is from the archive of the photographer; some of these photographs were sold to and published in national Dutch and international newspapers and magazines while others remained unpublished.Bianca Dony was part of a group of 150 Christian tourists from various European countries who were now - after the Israeli capture of these areas - able to visit the holy places in the old city of Jerusalem Bethlehem and other places that had previously been inaccessible. The tourists in the present photographs were the first of many and Dony took this opportunity to not only document the trip itself but also the general aftermath of the war. With an additional leaf in the inside front pocket of the album containing notes of how many photographs were sold to different newspapers and magazines including 10 to the "Haagsche Courant" written in blue and red ink and in pencil. Some of the clear plastic inserts have small round white stickers on them with different abbreviations connecting the photographs to the newspapers and magazines that possibly printed them for example "HC" for Haagsche Courant etc. 3 photographs are loosely inserted and 2 of these are duplicates of other photo's in the album the 2 duplicates contain a blue stamp "foto bianca dony 147 Malakkastraat Den Haag - Tel. 5582540 Giro 303814" and a manuscript caption in red ink on the back. Most other photographs are simply numbered in pencil on the back. This rare collection of 44 historically significant photographs is in very good condition.l Cf. Rebecca L. Publié Par Ordre Du Roi Au Dépot Gén.al De La Guerre.Physical Description:1 Karte : Kupferstich ; 126 x 129 cm gefaltet. While Napoleon Bonaparte was Emperor of the French in the early 1800’s Jean-Jacques Pelet worked as a French General. He eventually became a politician and later in life began working on a manuscript incorporating all his journal entries and past endeavors into an unfinished work. After Napoleon's abdication in April of 1814 the restored Bourbons made Pelet-Clozeau a Knight of Saint Louis. Nevertheless when Napoleon returned from exile in 1815 Pelet-Clozeau rallied to him. Pelet-Clozeau took a command in the 2nd Chasseurs à Pied of the Old Guard in Morand's division and he served at Ligny. At the Battle of Waterloo he and his men defended Plancenoit. After Napoleon's second abdication Pelet-Clozeau was put on non-activity. He resumed an active career in 1818 and in 1830 he became director of the Depot of War. In 1831 Pelet-Clozeau entered politics and he was elected a deputy of Haute-Garonne. Four years later he was grievously wounded when Fieschi tried to assassinate King Louis Philippe with the infernal machine in the same attack that killed Marshal Mortier. In 1845 Pelet-Clozeau again became director of the Depot of War and he finished his military career there before retiring and later joining the senate. Some of Pelet’s military career was spent as a topographical engineer where his responsibilities were to survey land and terrain and create maps depicting camps located in the various locations of the war campaigns that were executed at this time. Below I have chosen to highlight a detailed map of Toulon France which was created and either printed or drawn in 1793 during the siege of Toulon by the French. Dornbusch lists only a 1909 edition of this useful compilation which covers not only the War of the Rebellion but also the Spanish-American War Philippine Insurrection "and all Old Wars." Stamped "Property of the Bureau of Pensions" on three pages which is interesting since the Preface prints a letter from the Bureau of Pensions acknowledging how helpful Strait's earlier lists were to the work of the bureau. The authority to create military burial places came during the American Civil War in an act passed by the U. S. Congress on July 17 1862. The Department of the Army maintains 2 national cemeteries Arlington National Cemetery and United States Soldiers' and Airmen's Home National Cemetery. This index was published for the information of surviving comrades and friends in connection with the published Rolls of Honor. The alphabetical index was arranged by States to the various places of internment specified in the Rolls of Honor. As no index was contained in any of the volumes of the Rolls of Honor the present work forms a very valuable aid in searching for the manes of the dead who are supposed to have been killed or buried at any specified place.
