Main headline: "Closing in on Singapore Vanguard: Rear-guard of Defeated British Army Cut Off; Battle of Annihilation in Johor". Other headlines include: "Occupation of Strategic Territory of Batu Anam; Australian 8th Division Crushed" followed by an account of fighting between Japanese and Australian forces in Malaya; "Main Enemy Position Cut Off: Battle of Annihilation on the Bataan Peninsula Heats Up"; "Steady Advance by Road: Imperial Army's Fierce Attack on West Coast" followed by account of Japanese advances in Malaya with map; "British Cabinet Restructured"; "US Said to Be Sending Troops to Northern Ireland". Several articles on the back page emphasise material and spiritual preparations being made in Japan for a "long war". 1719176771東京. Tokyo.: 日本放送出版会社. Nihon Hōsō Shuppan Kaisha. Showa 17 1942. Colour folding map scale 1:14500000 55cm x 80cm naval warship photographic illustrations on reverse. The wartime paper is browned and friable but small closed tears along fold lines and edges have been neatly repaired with archival washi on the verso. 79 x 53cm This colour map of Asia and the Pacific was published as a supplement to a magazine Hoso 放送 on January 1942 less than one month after the Pearl Harbor attack by the Japanese Forces. The war had just started but amazingly the map accurately predicted where the fighting would take place throughout the war. An inset map on upper right shows Singapore Borneo Sumatra and Java where battles took place in the area in early 1942. An inset chart on lower left shows various resources and their location including coal tin and iron ore clearly showing that the war was fought over securing resources. On reverse eleven photographic illustrations of war ships from Germany Britain the US and Japan are shown including the Prince of Wales and Enterprise. . 日本放送出版会社. 1719219230東京. Tokyo.: 日本放送協会. Nihon Hōsō Shuppan Kyōkai. Showa 17 1942. Colour folding map scale 1: 10000000 54.7cm x 79.5cm chronology of building the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere on reverse. Some light browning a little darker at folds and reverse washi repairs to folds on reverse. This colour map of Asia and the Pacific published on 30 January 1942—just one month after Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor—offers a striking glimpse into wartime strategy and propaganda. Remarkably despite being produced at the war's outset it accurately anticipated key battlegrounds that would define the conflict. The main map is supplemented by two inset maps: one in the upper right highlighting Japan the Hawaiian Islands and Honolulu and another in the lower left focusing on Singapore with Darwin marked along the lower edge. <br> <br>The reverse side features a revealing chronological chart titled "Building Great East Asia" documenting Japan's military expansion from the 1931 Manchurian Incident through January 1942 as troops advanced across Southeast Asia. Notably two blank rows were intentionally left at the chart's end anticipating future victories to be recorded as the war progressed—a telling detail that underscores the map's dual role as both strategic document and propaganda tool. An interesting map which combines geographical precision with ideological messaging. . 日本放送協会. [Nihon Hōsō Shuppan Kyōkai]. unknown

1719206642New York. May 171905. Colour lithograph on a single newspaper leaf 23 x 20.5 cms image; 32.5 x 22.8 cms sheet issued as the front page of "Puck" magazine May 171905 related text on the verso; short repaired marginal tears not affecting the image lower left corner with faint creases in very good condition. A caricature from the American satirical journal "Puck" depicting the fear that struck European powers following the Japanese victory in the Russo-Japanese war of 1904-1905. The head of an armed Japanese soldier emerges as a rising sun over the horizon as a group of European leaders huddles below. Uncle Sam is nowhere to be seen. The tone of the related text on the verso strikes rather a different note: <br> <br>"France has deliberately permitted the enemies of Japan to use her territory as if it were their own and has thus invited trouble of far-reaching possibilities and of a kind highly inimical to the general peace of the world. All of which should make Uncle Sam wary in his dealings with these foreign powers that regard international agreements and ententes cordiales with contempt." <br> <br>The "When" of the caricature equally queried an end to American isolationism as well as the European fear of the rise of Japan. . unknown

1766WRCAM47802Paris 1766. 2220pp. plus large folding map. Large folio. Stitched. Minor soiling and foxing. Very good. Defense of the Comte de Lally for his actions in India during the Seven Years' War. This is one of two versions authored by him. Lally head of the French expedition to India reached Pondichery in 1758. Though capable he was incredibly unpopular and fell into a series of events which proved fatal to his career and his person. He was unsuccessful in the Siege of Madras beaten at the Battle of Wandiwash and eventually capitulated from the siege of Pondichery. Taken prisoner by the British he returned to France on parole and was imprisoned for two years before being put on trial and executed. This is his last defence published shortly thereafter or perhaps immediately preceding. A publisher's note is dated April 14 and Lally was executed May 6. The map shows the Indian subcontinent and Madagascar. unknown books

Large 4to. 295 mm. x 240 mm. Modern plain full leather binding. Hardbound. Very good. WITH AMERICAN CIVIL WAR ERA 1863 MANUSCRIPT NOTES AND ANNOTATIONS. Edited by the great 'Republican' Thomas Hollis with additions and corrections by Joseph Robertson this edition includes: Memoirs of the Life of Algernon Sydney; Discourses Concerning Government; Letters of Algernon Sydney taken from Thurloe's State Papers; The Protector's Advice to Algernon Sydney; Letters of Algernon Sydney taken from the Sydney papers; Letters of A. Sydney to Henry Savile Ambassador in France; The Trial of A. Sydney; The Apology of A. Sydney in the Day of his Death; and A General view of Government in Europe. This is an important book in the history of the ideas that founded the American republic but what is perhaps most interesting about this copy are the manuscript notes and annotations written in a careful small hand in America during the Civil War 1863. A few of these struck our eye and we're glad to reproduce a few selections here: "I have lately undertaking to read Algernon Sydney on government. There is great difference in reading a book at four and twenty and at eighty eight. As often as I have read it and fumbled it over it now excites fresh admiration that this work has excited so little interest in the literary world. As splendid an edition of it as the art of printing can produce as well as for the intrinsic merits of the work as for the proof it brings of the bitter sufferings of the advocates of liberty from that time to this and to show the slow progress of moral philosophical political illumination in the world ought to now be published in America" - John Adams to Thomas Jefferson 17 September 1823. ".the danger in America. arises from 1 the indifference of the people to the character of their deputies; 2 the disinclination of good men to go as deputies; 3 and the inclination of bad men to go as such. The rottenness of our law making bodies has reached such a point that if it shall not soon be cured it can not longer endure." - 1863. "Among the causes which have brought the USA to their present unhappy condition may be reckoned as a leading one the predominance in their councils of mere municipal lawyers. The low morals and the crass ignorance of these are not equal to the work of government filched by them from a blindly confiding people. A profession proverbially selfish and dishonest can not produce statesmen however fecund it may be of politicians. The conduct of government is the work of statesmen - of unselfish honest high-hearted great-minded men = that class has disappeared and has given way to small country lawyers whose minds exercise only upon petty squabbles of the neighborhood incapable of grasping the vast concerns of a nation. Bad as this is there is something worse. and that is that the profession of the law is every year sinking lower in ignorance and in contempt while at the same time it is rising in power." - 1863. These manuscript annotations make this copy UNIQUE and very worthy of further study. W150. PRICE JUST REDUCED! Language: eng. Hardcover. Very Good. Printed by W. Strahan Jun. for T. An anthology of letters addressed to the heads of state from numerous county officials occasioned by the conquest of the British controlled Mediterranean island of Minorca by French forces in 1756. The naval battle was the opening maritime engagement of the Seven Years' War in the European theatre. The failure of the Royal Navy to defend the territory led to the court-martial and execution of commanding officer Admiral John Byng. The defeat led to nationwide consternation that the French would press their advantage to capture British possessions in America and perhaps countenance an invasion of England. ESTC T50978. 1740WRCAM43159London 1740. Engraving with hand-coloring 14 x 8 3/4 inches. Minor soiling. Color quite bright and fresh. Very good. A satire against French Cardinal Fleury Chief Minister to Louis XV published during the frenzy of celebrations over Admiral Vernon's victory over the Spanish at the Battle of Porto Bello - an enthusiasm which the Cardinal apparently did not share. Fleury was an ally of Robert Walpole whose power was in decline and had reluctantly agreed to hostilities with Spain. Fleury is seen here seated reaching out toward a medallion of Admiral Vernon and holding a scroll which reads "His iron will get ye better of my gold" and "G-d he'll take all our acquisitions in America." On the wall behind him are several small crude illustrations one of which appears to be a portly Walpole hanging from a gallows above the slogan "No matter if he is longer than ye gallows." A head sits atop a pole perhaps alluding to the fact that many people would be pleased to see Walpole's head positioned thus. Engraved by George Bickham.
