The Father of Linear Programming and the Inventor of the "Simplex Method" "Dantzig's paper originally written in 1947 but not published until 1951 was a fundamental application of computers to problems of management and economics. Dantzig was one of three founders together with John von Neumann and Leonid Kantorovich of linear programming a mathematical method used for the optimum allocation of scarce resources among competing activities. In 1947 Dantzig discovered that many such allocation problems could be formulated as linear computer problems. He also devised an algorithm known as the simplex method which allowed these programs to be performed on a large scale and applied to real-world problems. An algorithm of tremendous power the simplex method remains a major part of most operations research applications." 73222A holographic letter on Immaculate Heart College letterhead from the American Roman Catholic religious sister and Pop Art pioneer. Undated it was likely written in the mid-1960s prior to her return to secular life in 1968 as Corita Kent.

The letter was written in reply to Eugene Anthony "Gene" McNerney Jr. 1899-80 a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia who worked as newspaper artist and magazine illustrator before embarking on a distinguished career in the Marine Corps. Attributing the delay in responding to her hectic schedule she writes "We're not really ungrateful - just inefficient . after teaching three successive summer sessions it almost seems tame to be back in regular session." Kent also makes reference to an ad she placed in Graphis Annual and two individuals associated with her work with the Department of Fine Arts concluding with an invitation to an open house and sale.

Kent served as the chair of the Department of Fine Arts at Immaculate Heart College in Los Angeles. After the Second Vatican Council she transformed the college's annual Mary's Day procession into a community celebration which was part of the sister's campaign to bring secular people together. During this time Kent's work became increasingly political addressing events such as the Vietnam War and humanitarian crises. Incorporating brilliant colors and bold shapes her art was her activism. Tensions between the order and church leadership were mounting with the Los Angeles Archdiocese criticizing the college as "liberal" and Cardinal James McIntyre labeling Kent's work as "blasphemous" which hastened her departure from the order. Most sisters followed suit and the Immaculate Heart College closed in 1980. Kent continued to create spiritually-informed artwork primarily silkscreen or serigraphy which played an important role in the renaissance of the poster as a medium of communication and continues to influence graphic design well into the 20th century.

One page 8 ½" x 11" folded into thirds for mailing. One broadside sheet printed recto only. 18-1/8" x 6-1/4"

Margaret Julia Mitchell popularly known as Maggie Mitchell was an American actress born in New York. She made her first regular appearance as Julia in The Soldier's Daughter at the Chambers Street Theatre in 1851. The parts in which she was best liked were Jane Eyre Mignon Little Barefoot and Fanchon the Cricket. Wiki In January 1861 At at De Bar’s St. Charles Theatre in New Orleans Mitchell first appeared in Fanchon the Cricket a new secondhand adaptation by August Waldauer from George Sand’s story “La Petite Fadette.” Her characterization of the sprite of a heroine which included a graceful and entrancing shadow dance was an immediate sensation. Her Southern tour was cut short by the Civil War and Mitchell took Fanchon to Boston and New York where it was equally successful. Fanchon remained her mainstay for 30 years. Audiences never tired of it—her admirers included the likes of Abraham Lincoln and Ralph Waldo Emerson—and even in her 50s Mitchell retained the winsome elfin appeal that made her so successful. She also early obtained the rights to Fanchon which enabled her to amass a considerable estate. EB. We find one institutional holding of this playbill at the MHS. 70642Very good. A collection of approximately 80 handwritten letters from a Rochester New York man injured in battle during World War II. The group also includes a few letters written by the mother of Lt. Herbert F. Vicinus 1918-95 who enlisted with the U.S. Army in 1940 and was deployed overseas shortly after he was married in 1943. During his deployment the first of Vicinus' sons was born. His second child Kenneth wrote a self-published memoir entitled "Wrong Minded" 2014 recalling growing up next-door to his maternal grandparents and his father's career at Eastman Kodak. The collection includes a handful of letters written by Vicinus to his wife Henrietta while he was in training in 1943. Following a short gap the letters pick up in early 1944. On June 6 1944 D-Day he writes: "You're wondering where I am and lots of things. I know how terribly worried you are. Please don't be. I do hope you can feel my nearness and I hope I'm able to quiet your fears. I'm alright and always shall be. Yes I'm as excited as everyone else is. I'm listening to the new and trying to get the full picture of it. It's really a feeling of relief and cause for cheering to know that the beginning of the end is near. We've been waiting a long time for it." While overseas Vicinus wrote to his wife on a near daily basis so one can imagine it was concerning to her when there was a long gap in his letters. On July 28 he wrote "I must say I don't know when I'll be able to write you again but darling I will at the first opportunity." In the next letter written from a hospital in England on August 13 he tells her about being injured: "Don't get scared now - I promise you I'm alright. I'm sitting in a very comfortable bed in a nice clean set of pajamas and enjoying the luxury of the service in a hospital. I got a slight wound in my right foot the 10th of the month 4 p.m. in fact. A piece of shrapnel went through my right foot. A slight fracture of the bone included." We then learn from his letters that he did not receive mail from her until September 4 despite writing letters to her daily once he was hospitalized: "You made me very happy today dear. In fact I feel like a different person. This morning I received three swell letters from you." In response to his wife's questions he also writes that it's unlikely he will be sent home "I'm not wounded badly enough" he says. "It will heal right here and I'll be perfectly alright soon." By mid-December Vicinus is out of the hospital and back in active service. The final letter in the archive is written from Antwerp on September 30 1945: "At last we've been alerted for movement Honey. I haven't written for two or three days now Honey. It's not that I didn't want to. It's just that I felt so low and despondent I couldn't write anything cheerful and I'd be a worse heel to send you one to make you feel blue." The collection is housed in plastic sleeves within in a three-ring binder. The vast majority of the letters are accompanied by the original mailing envelopes and are in very good condition. unknown books

Norwegian edition of Lerner's classic play adapted from George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion signed by the legendary American chef author and television personality. Text in Norwegian and with photos of cast members from a Norwegian production of the play. Signed by Julia Child on the front cover and further signed "P. And J. Child Oslo 19 Jan 60" on front free endpaper. This date corresponds with the time that the Childs lived in Oslo during Paul's waning years as an American diplomat. Amusingly the dialogue entries for Henry Higgins and Eliza pp. 49 - 58 have been "X"-marked in the margins beginning with the line "En perfekt siggarett gir sollid appetit" which corresponds to and here replaces the famous line in which Eliza mispronounces her vowels leading then to the celebrated song "Just you wait Henry Higgins." A piano-vocal score of The Invisible Fire was published by H.W. Gray in New York in 1957. In 1960 the Methodist Publishing House issued a volume containing the libretto texts about the work and numerous related color photographs. The text of the oratorio is by Tom F. Driver born 1925 with parts adapted from Charles Wesley John Wesley and William Cowper.

"The oratorio was commissioned by the National Methodist Student Movement and the Department of Worship and the Arts of the National Council of Churches. It was first performed at the National Methodist Student Conference on December 31 1957 with the Kansas City Philharmonic and 200 voice conference choir Thor Johnson conducting." He played first oboe in the Colorado Springs SO 1934-41 and Denver SO 1937-41. He taught at the Colorado College 1936-41 1946-8 served as conductor of the 506th US Army Band 1941-5 and taught at the University of Colorado in Boulder 1948-81 composer-in-residence 1981-4 where he became the head of the composition department. He formed a lifelong friendship with Roy Harris beginning in 1941. In 1954 Effinger patented the 'Musicwriter' typewriter which he manufactured and sold worldwide for 35 years. He also invented the 'Tempowatch' the only device that can accurately determine the tempo of music as it is being performed.

"As a composer he was prolific;. among his most popular compositions are his choral works several of which are large scale and based on sacred subjects including. The Invisible Fire 1957. Although he used dissonance he never abandoned consonant harmonies referring to his idiom as 'atonal tonality'. His instrumental works contain lyrical string melodies lilting woodwind figurations and traditional developmental forms. Many of his works reflect his native Rocky Mountain region in their choice of text programmatic titles and pastoral style that he associated with western themes." Lawrence Worster in Grove Music Online.

"Cassilly" may well refer to American tenor Richard Cassilly 1927-1998 whose career had taken off in the mid-1950s. In that case the present sketch might be a replacement requested by the singer of the original version as notated on page 76 of the piano-vocal score to which it refers. unknown books
