73222A holographic letter on Immaculate Heart College letterhead from the American Roman Catholic religious sister and Pop Art pioneer. Undated it was likely written in the mid-1960s prior to her return to secular life in 1968 as Corita Kent.<br/> <br/>The letter was written in reply to Eugene Anthony "Gene" McNerney Jr. 1899-80 a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia who worked as newspaper artist and magazine illustrator before embarking on a distinguished career in the Marine Corps. Attributing the delay in responding to her hectic schedule she writes "We're not really ungrateful - just inefficient . after teaching three successive summer sessions it almost seems tame to be back in regular session." Kent also makes reference to an ad she placed in Graphis Annual and two individuals associated with her work with the Department of Fine Arts concluding with an invitation to an open house and sale.<br/> <br/>Kent served as the chair of the Department of Fine Arts at Immaculate Heart College in Los Angeles. After the Second Vatican Council she transformed the college's annual Mary's Day procession into a community celebration which was part of the sister's campaign to bring secular people together. During this time Kent's work became increasingly political addressing events such as the Vietnam War and humanitarian crises. Incorporating brilliant colors and bold shapes her art was her activism. Tensions between the order and church leadership were mounting with the Los Angeles Archdiocese criticizing the college as "liberal" and Cardinal James McIntyre labeling Kent's work as "blasphemous" which hastened her departure from the order. Most sisters followed suit and the Immaculate Heart College closed in 1980. Kent continued to create spiritually-informed artwork primarily silkscreen or serigraphy which played an important role in the renaissance of the poster as a medium of communication and continues to influence graphic design well into the 20th century.<br/> <br/>One page 8 ½" x 11" folded into thirds for mailing. 72722A holographic letter on the Scottish novelist's Penicuik letterhead dated September 18 1901. Crockett writes "You seem a nice girl and live in a respectable neighbourhood. Ah if only you did not collect autographs how useful and happy your young life might be! Repent while yet there is time. Give all you have to the next bazaar. Then undermine the building after the manner of the late Mr. Faux Guy of that name - and - you will have done some good to the world."<br/> <br/>After graduating Edinburgh University in 1879 and studying for the ministry at New Colly in 1886 he became minister of Penicuik Midlothian. With the success of the novels The Stickit Minister 1893 and The Lilac Sunbonnet 1894 he abandoned the ministry for writing following the vogue for novels in Scots dialect set by James M. Barrie. Crockett published more than 40 books mainly novels and was a leader of the Kailyard kitchen garden school of writers who depicted Scottish rural life in a sentimental fashion.<br/> <br/>Single sheet 4" x 6 ¼" with previous folds for mailing. A large manuscript sketchleaf of eleven measures written by the admired conductor and son of the violinist Jan Kubelik who was also an accomplished composer. <br><br><br />A substantial sketchleaf of an unidentified instrumental work evidenly from a working manuscript the music is written in pencil on two systems of five staves. The voices are incomplete and there is evidence of annotations and corrections throughout. On the verso he has composed two systems of two staves with further brief incomplete sketches beneath which Kubelik has signed in bold black ink. One large horizontal crease and some creasing and wear around the edges left edge rough; otherwise very good condition. 24.2 x 31.7 cm. unknown books

Laid down to ivory mounting paper. <br/><br/>Quotation comprising the first five measures of the vocal part from Ganz's song "Sing Birdie Sing" notated on one staff in 6/8 time in A major. Marked "Allegro vivo." With text underlay in English "Sing birdie sing and let thy song be of this earth". <br/><br/>Some light creasing and foxing; minor staining from remnants of adhesive to upper edge not affecting music or signature. Ganz was a noted organist violinist conductor and composer. Born in Mainz he settled permanently in London in 1851. "In 1856 Ganz was an accompanist on Jenny Lind's tour of England and Scotland and for some years thereafter he accompanied many of the leading singers in London. He was also the organist at the German Lutheran church in the Strand. Ganz joined Henry Wylde's New Philharmonic Society as second violinist in 1852. In 1874 he became joint conductor of the society with Wylde and in 1879 on Wylde's resignation continued the concerts alone first under the former name and after 1880 as 'Mr Ganz's Orchestral Concerts'. During his three seasons as conductor Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique and Liszt's Dante Symphony were performed in their entirety for the first time in London and a number of eminent artists including Annette Essipov Sophie Menter Saint-Saëns and Pachmann appeared as soloists." Impressive collection of AMQS and inscriptions addressed to the celebrated soprano Delphine Ugalde on both sides of a large album leaf measuring 31.5 x 23.5 cm 12.5 x 9.5 inches. Fine. <br><br />The recto with: eight measures written and signed by the French composer Charles Lecocq from his wildly successful "La fille de Madame Angot" which when premiered in Paris in 1873 was performed for more than 400 nights consecutively. Inscribed to Ugalde and dated 20 May 1873; an unidentified inscription; a heartfelt inscription from Rossini's friend and biographer Alexis Azevedo dated 17 July 1870. <br><br />The verso with: a three-measure 1869 quotation by Fauré celebrated French baritone and composer creator of important roles by Massé Thomas Meyerbeer Verdi and others who has penned a selection from his own Sacred Song for Voice and Piano "Les Rameaux" with a trimmed albumen photograph of him affixed beneath; a heartfelt 1869 inscription by Capoul the great French tenor creator of Offenbach's Vert-Vert and Masse's Paul et Virginie who writes that he is "so happy of your return to us that I embrace you as strongly as I admire you"; an 1870 inscription from Dejazet important French actress who writes that her "voice remains always charming even when it is speaking it is your great heart which sings" and with a trimmed albumen photograph of her affixed beneath; with one additional unidentifed inscription lower left dated 1873. <br><br />Ugalde "studied in Paris with Cinti-Damoreau and made her début in 1848 at the Opéra-Comique as Angèle in Auber's Le domino noir a role created by her teacher. In 1851 she sang at Her Majesty's Theatre London as Delilah in Auber's L'enfant prodigue. In 1858 she sang Leonora Il trovatore at the Paris Opéra and was then engaged at the Théâtre Lyrique. Mr. Ward & myself will be able to arrange about the sittings - when the time arrives - without much difficulty. Forgive me for not writing sooner." This letter was addressed to Sir Henry Lucy a patron of the arts who mounted the letter in a scrap book and added a postscript in the left margin: "The portrait was painted and hung for years in our dining room." Gently faded at the edges with light spotting in the margins; still in very good condition overall.<br/><br/> English illustrator and political cartoonist who was prominent in the second half of the 19th century. He is best remembered for sponsoring Henry Morton Stanley's trip to Africa to find David Livingston financing the whole endeavor for exclusive dispatches from the Congo. As a sportsman Bennett is credited with organizing the first tennis match in the United States.
