Fullbright was a professor of Physics at the University of Rochester educated at Washington University in St. Louis taking his A.B. in 1940 he continued with his M.S. and Ph.D. received in 1944. He was in charge of the Washington University cyclotron later shipped to India where Fulbright helped install it for its second career and from 1942-44 was under contract to the Manhattan District Project transferring to the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory through 1946. At this point he taught four years at Princeton University as Assistant Professor and then left for Rochester in 1950. He earned a Fulbright and Guggenheim Fellowship a Fellow at Copenhagen lecturing widely in Strasbourg Chandigarh and Leningrad. "Although Fulbright concentrated on nuclear physics for most of his career his interests turned to Astronomy in his later years. . . The title page is inscribed and signed by the publisher "To Irving Thalberg with kindest regards and best wishes Morris Gest". Original half vellum over paper-covered boards the upper side illustrated and titled in gilt spine lettered in gilt. With minor soiling and handling to cover light toning on backing paper pages else fine condition. From the estate of Norma Shearer whom Thalberg married in 1927. 100 pp. 11 x 14 .5 in. <br><br><br />A remarkable association copy inscribed to the legendary Hollywood production executive Irving Thalberg who took hold of Universal City at age 20 and supervised such films as Ben Hur and Mutiny on the Bounty among many others. He died of pneumonia at age 37.<br><br><br />Morris Gest born 1881 in Vilna Lithuania as Moses Gershonovitch died May 16 1942 at the age of 61. He produced "The Miracle" in 1924 and "Lady Precious Stream" in 1936 introduced an original Russian ballet to America Baliev's 'Chauve-Souris' and brought Stanislavski's Moscow Art Theatre in repertory to America in 1923. n.p. hardcover books

1975187831975. Mixed media on paper. Signed dated and numbered "#02" Alexander Sarantos Tremulis 1914-1991 was the designer of the production version of the 1948 Tucker Torpedo and was America's most original design theorist of the post-war era. He was born in Chicago and without any training in drawing or engineering joined the design team of Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg in 1933. He was chief stylist when the company failed in 1937. He worked for GM Chrysler and Custom Motors in Beverly Hills which designed unique cars for movie stars. During World War II he worked for the Air Force designing aircraft and in the process drew what may have been the first visualizations of extra-terrestrial transport: flying saucers. After the war Tremulis worked with Preston Tucker and later for Ford. He formed his own consulting firm in the 1960's. This quite beautiful design and other similar ones were made for the ill-fated Bricklin car company which existed from 1974 to 1976 and whose demise had nothing to do with Tremulis's designs. He was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in 1982. unknown books

Early grey cloth upper cover lettered in gilt.<br/> <br/>An interesting contemporary account of the Trans-Siberian Railroad by an important Canadian railroad executive.<br/> <br/>"After a short career with a Scottish railway William Whyte emigrated to the Canadas in 1863 and accepted a job as a brakeman on the Grand Trunk Railway. Rising through the ranks he served as freight and station agent at various locations culminating his career with the company as the assistant superintendent of its central division. In October 1883 he moved to the Ontario and Quebec Railway as its general superintendent and a year later when this company was leased in perpetuity to the Canadian Pacific Railway he became the superintendent of the Ontario division. In 1886 he was transferred to Winnipeg as the superintendent of the CPR's western division . In 1901 Shaughnessy who had succeeded Sir William Cornelius Van Horne as president of the CPR in 1899 appointed Whyte his assistant to advise him on 'all matters connected with colonization proposed extensions of the Companys railway system the development of industries along the Companys lines the establishment of new business connections and the administration of the Companys lands town-sites and other properties of that description.' In 1903 Whyte was elected second vice-president in charge of the western lines. He was promoted vice-president in 1910. Whyte's most pressing problem from 1901 was to solve the recurrent blockages hampering the export of grain from the prairies. Under his direction the company constructed nearly 4000 miles of branch lines within a decade multiplied its rolling stock and experimented with ever-larger locomotives" Dictionary of Canadian Biography. The primary reason for this trip would appear to be to ascertain whether the Trans-Siberian railway would make Siberia a significant competitor to Canada's grain exports. Focusing on Siberia Whyte's epistolary reports goes into great detail on the route from Cheliabinsk to Vladivostock the agricultural prospects and natural resources along the way with a particular emphasis on Irkutsk and the articles imported. Much of his information came from first-hand examination as well as conversations with government officials and local merchants. In consequence of these properties it is shown that the eigenvalues of V are known as soon as one knows the angles of the 2n-dimensional rotation represented by V. Together with the eigenvalues of V the matrix which diagonalizes V is obtained as a spin-representation of a known rotation. The determination of is needed for the calculation of the degree of order. The approximation in which all the eigenvalues of V but the largest are neglected is discussed and it is shown that the exact partition function does not differ much from the approximate result." Israeli theoretical physicist who is known for her contributions to Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity and statistical physics where she used applied spinor analysis to rederive the results of Lars Onsager on the partition function of the two-dimensional Ising Model and to the study of the Mossbauer effect on which she collaborated with John von Neumann and Harry Lipkin.
