He served as British Ambassador to the United States between 1924 and 1930. He was one of Britain's most influential diplomats of the early part of the twentieth century. With a gift for languages and a skilled diplomat Howard is described in his biography as an integral member of the small group of men who made and implemented British foreign policy between 1900 and 1930 a critical transitional period in Britain's history as a world power." Sindelar established a reputation for himself in graphic design and illustration during the first quarter of the 20th century through his favourably reviewed creation of a number of menu cover designs produced for a series of events referred to as the Lotos Club dinners in New York City. The guest lists for the events included four U.S. presidents and other notables of the time including writer Mark Twain. In 1893 he concluded his studies as an M.D. he pursued a career in anthropology and eduction becoming President of the University of Colorado in 1914 a position he would hold for the next 5 years. In 1921 he became the fourth president of Cornell University. Under his leadership Cornell's enrollment and endowment increased rapidly. He held the office of President until 1937 leaving a brief 2 years before his death in 1939. Wiki.
