196441800Bloomfield Hills Michigan: Charles Pachter at Cranbrook Academy of Art 1964. 8 folded sheets of handmade paper 18 x 14 1/2 inches. Each with a poem printed on the left hand side and a full-page black and white lithographic illustration on the right hand side. Original tissue guards. Signed and numbered by Charles Pachter on the colophon page. Unbound. Within blue printed paper wrappers handmade by Pachter and an original blind-stamped protective cloth chemise 19 x 15 inches

Limited edition Number 4 of 15 of The Circle Game Margaret Atwood’s early poetry collection with evocative illustrations by Charles Pachter.

The present work is a collaborative project between renowned Canadian author Margaret Atwood and Canadian artist Charles Pachter. The Circle Game explores themes of childhood loss and the passage of time. The series of poems presents an image of children playing a repetitive game symbolizing cycles of life innocence and inevitable change. While the children appear carefree the speaker hints at a deeper awareness of how time alters experience; what was once a simple game will eventually become something different marked by growing awareness and loss. The series of poems also oscillates to the voice of another speaker a lover in bed observing and being observed. In describing the speaker Atwood writes of a "taut curiosity" where a playful quality of childhood is rediscovered in "word-plays calculated ploys of the body the witticisms of touch." In a similar way that Atwood describes the children's repetitive "tranced moving" as lacking joy she inserts distance and anxiety within the intimate space of lovers unsettling the idea of a once idyllic passion. Pachter contributes a series of illustrations which combine literal interpretation and expressive abstraction to depict the haunting anxious qualities that lurk behind Atwood's deceptively simple verse. Accompanying for instance the stanzas in which the speaker describes being stuck under the scrupulous gaze of her lover is an illustration of a round nude female body next to a dark large intrusive face with scrutinizing eyes whose presence dominates the page. Elsewhere the group of children with their faces abstracted are depicted in an ouroboros-like circle surrounding a large black mass performing their joyless play. Atwood's verse and Pachter's illustrations reinforce each other's tensions revealing the unease beneath repetition the scrutiny within closeness and the inevitability of transformation. Together they create a work that is both visually and lyrically haunting inviting readers to reconsider the cycles they inhabit and the ways in which they too are observed and changed.

Lecker and David A2. 05-06351968. Gouache painting on board. 1.5 x 17 inches. BellevueAnnotated titled and dated on the mount by the artist in pencil. Literature: Millard Sheets. One-Man Renaissance by Janice Lovoos and Edmund Penney p. 148. Authenticated by the artist's son Tony Sheets on the verso. "Hilton’s Rainbow Murals Perhaps second only to Diamond Head as a Waikiki landmark the rainbow murals adorning the mauka mountain and makai ocean ends of the Village’s Rainbow Tower are the world’s tallest ceramic murals. Designed by renowned artist Millard Sheets the colorful ceramic tiles climb the entire height of the 31-story tower. By design the murals welcome all visitors to Oahu regardless of their hotel choice; the focal point for the murals is 2.5 miles away which on the ocean side coincides with the air corridor in and out of Honolulu International Airport. An inscription in Hawaiian on the mural reads: “Ho’ola’a ia I na kanaka me o ka uhane o Hawaii†“dedicated to the people and spirit of Hawaiiâ€. During 2004 the murals will receive a facelift of sorts – more than 100 tiles that have cracked broken or become badly weathered by the elements over the past 35 years will be replaced with exact recreations that will be impossible to discern from Sheets’ original masterpieces." 1968. unknown

Preserved with the original chemise and cloth slipcase with gilt-stamped calf spine label: "ABRAHAM LINCOLN - LORD CHARNWOOD - 1916 - FORE-EDGE PAINTING". This is also a very rare specimen with the original chemise and box extant. Provenance: ownership names of R. Joseph Rich Margaret Rich Carr; Joseph Sampsell Carr. Fine. WITH A FORE-EDGE PAINTING BY MS. C. B. CURRIE showing "a view of Harper's Ferry W. Virginia." "This is No. 145 of the Books with Fore-edge Paintings by Miss Currie. . . " Painted ca. 1928/9. See: Weber p. 341 #145 was previously unknown. Currie painted a scene of Harper's Ferry on the Life of John Brown See Weber A8 p. 348. SIGNED IN INK AT FOOT OF LIMITATION PAGE BY C. B. CURRIE. / In all about 172 Currie fore-edge painting were painted. Each is numbered in consecutive order with her known active period of painting fore-edges from c.1909/10-1929/33. All Currie fore-edge paintings are rare. / Miss Caroline Billin Curry aka "Miss. C.B. Currie" 1849-1940 was famous for painting both ivory miniatures and on fore-edge paintings exclusively for Sotheran's and strictly on Riviere bindings. Currie is important as being the only known artist to have signed all her work and numbered the pieces. She was highly touted in her lifetime as an artist who was singled-out for her skill and exquisite artistry that she thereby became the first artist so-named by Sotheran prominently in their catalogue series. Indeed she was a close associate and friend of the shop manager Mr. John Harrison Stonehouse and his wife Currie was named in their will. Even despite her prominence Currie's correct full name was a mystery until very recently. See Weber. This particular specimen was 1 previously unknown to myself 2 preserved the most-frequently missing chemise and 3 a clear provenance to this copy is noted the only one so located by myself. / PROVENANCE: Oddly this is the first known Currie fore-edge painting with provenance that is understood to be after the painting of the Harper's Ferry scene. The importance of that is the relationship of the ownership of a book to the date of the painting or otherwise owning a book before a fore-edge painting is applied to the book. In this case the ownership is surely after the work of Currie. Three persons' names are found in the volume: Joseph Sampsell Carr may have lived in Chicago Illinois. Margaret Rich Carr may have been Margaret Lee Smith Rich Carr 1917-1981 buried in Lubbock Lubbock County Texas. R. Joseph Rich may have been associated with Jefferson Medical College Hospital Philadelphia. REFERENCE: Jeff Weber Annotated Dictionary of Fore-edge Painting & Binders 2010.
