198421236New York: Skyline Press Walker 1984. First Edition First Printing. Hardcover with Dust Jacket. Fine/Near Fine.

This is the first and only edition of this collaborative work notable for pairing Walker's vivid color-saturated street photography with Burroughs's reflections on perception and modern urban experience.

Walker b. 1945 was a key figure in the 1970s-80s color documentary photography movement associated with William Eggleston and Stephen Shore. His photographs celebrate the chromatic chaos and surreal juxtapositions of city life-especially New York's visual excess.

This copy is inscribed by Roger Boulton publisher at Skyline Press to Ben Raeburn legendary publisher of Horizon Press:
'With kindest regards to Ben Raeburn who has been an inspiration to so many authors artists and fellow-publishers.
Roger Boulton
11 September '84'.
This makes it an association copy of the highest order directly linking two influential independent publishers active in the modern art and literary press scene.

Collector Note:
Burroughs's participation-providing the introduction-adds substantial literary value and cross-collectibility. His text connects Walker's urban imagery to the same consciousness-expanding aesthetic found in his own fiction Naked Lunch The Soft Machine situating the book within the Beat Generation's visual legacy.

Condition: Blue cloth photographic dust jacket. Fine in a Near Fine jacket. The bindings are tight and square. Text and photographs are clean bright and unmarked. The jacket shows a short closed tear at the upper front edge and mild handling to the rear panel. No additional chips or fading. An exceptionally well-preserved copy. Inscribed by publisher Roger Boulton to Ben Raeburn founder of Horizon Press noted publisher of American modernist writers. Oblong 10.5 inches by 8.75 inches. 88 pages of color photography with the introduction and title pages unnumbered. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE -
Robert Walker's saturated street imagery captured the theatricality of New York's public life during the postmodern photography era. His work often compared to Eggleston and Shore has been exhibited internationally. William S. Burroughs's introduction frames Walker's visual chaos as a metaphor for human consciousness-a notable convergence of photography and Beat sensibility.

The personal inscription from publisher Roger Boulton to Ben Raeburn establishes a significant connection between two important figures in late-20th-century art publishing.
From the estate of Horizon Books publisher Ben Raeburn that passed to his partner Patricia.

Subjects: Robert Walker William S. 37041001New York 1945 Time. Pictorial stiff wrappers full issue 8 8 black & white photographs 4 page article very clean and & firm example 26.5 x 35.5 cm. FIRST & ONLY RARE EDITION . . . SUPERB ARTICLE ON "PAPPY BOYINGTON" COMMANDER OF THE . . . A BASTARD MARINE FIGHTER SQUADRON CALLED THE "BLACK SHEEP" . . HE WAS A FORMER "A.V.G." FIGHTER PILOT & "FLYING TIGER" . . WHO FLEW UNDER COMMAND OF GENERAL CLAIRE CHENNAULT . . Boyington served as a volunteer in the famous "A.V.G." "AMERICAN VOLUNTEER GROUP" later known as the "FLYING TIGERS" of Burma & China before Pearl Harbor. He was the the highest ace of the Marine Corps with 28 confirmed kills of Japanese aircraft. He is a five times ace and a half ! . He flew combat fighter missions until 1943 when he went back to the Marines and commanded a group of U.S. Marine misfit pilots. Boyington was also a misfit and was always in trouble or conflict where ever he was stationed. . In 1943 given his new command on Rabaul island he assembled a group of rejects misfits and unwanted into a fierce fighter pilot squadron of fierce Aces. In 86 days of combat they shot down 96 Japanese Imperial Air Force aircraft ! The highest number of any squadron in the Pacific during World War 2. . Unluckily Boyington was shot down by the Japanese on January 3 1944 and quietly sent to the secret Japanese prison in Ofuna near Tokyo with a broken and untreated ankle. He was kept company by other famous American flyers from the Doolittle raid on Tokyo and several other 'missing in action' people never heard from again. . The reunion in San Francisco at the St. Francis hotel was held in his honor by a large number of "BLACK SHEEP" squadron members and other old friends an Ace pilots. . RESCUE FROM OFUNA PRISON: . The Ofuna Camp Ofuna Shuyosho was an Imperial Japanese Navy installation located in Kamakura outside Yokohama Japan during World War II where high-value enlisted and officers particularly pilots and submariner prisoners of war were interrogated and incarcerated by Japanese naval intelligence Richard O'Kane Louis Zamperini and Gregory Boyington were among the prisoners held at Ofuna. . The Ofuna Camp was opened on April 26 1942 and was operated by a detachment of the Guard Unit of the Yokosuka Naval District. Whereas most other Japanese P.O.W. prisoner of war camps were run by the Imperial Japanese Army Ofuna was run by the Navy. In violation of international agreements including the Geneva Convention it was never officially reported as a prisoner camp and the International Red Cross was not allowed access. . The Japanese position was that the Ofuna Camp was only a temporary holding facility for prisoners who would be transferred elsewhere. It was commanded by Commander Yokura Sashizo who later would be sentenced to 25 years of hard labor for war crimes. . Ofuna had a reputation for intimidation and for torturing their inmates in an attempt to get military information and was nicknamed the "Torture Farm" by its inmates. As the prisoners sent to Ofuna were primarily officers who might have inside knowledge of Allied strategy or others working in critical areas such as communications and submarines it was the goal of the Japanese to extract as much information as possible in a short time. . The interrogations were repeated every two weeks but the interrogators compared notes to see if there were any discrepancies. Refusing to answer questions lying disrespect to the interrogators and a number of other infractions were punished by a beating with wooden clubs. Guards often beat prisoners or slapped them in the face for the slightest infraction or at times at random. Officers typically faced harsher treatment than enlisted ranks. Inmates also claimed that Ofuna guards were often sadistic enjoying the beating and clubbing of inmates. . The American forces liberated the prisoners on 21 August 1945. . The film: "UNBROKEN" was a story about one American inmate held in this brutal environment. . NOTE: Please visit our website for other books by/about Boyington including original signed items. We also have a large number of books by/about "A.V.G." "AMERICAN VOLUNTEER GROUP" & "FLYING TIGERS" including some RARE signed items. . Color photos are posted to our website. . REFERENCES: . unknown
