Tra gli infiniti studi di carattere vario dedicati a Hitler (storici, psicologici, biografici, persino esoterici) "Il Napoleone del terzo Reich" si segnala per una caratteristica unica: non tratta la complessa personalità del dittatore nazista col metro tipico degli storici anglosassoni, ovvero imputando a una follia insanabile ogni atto e ogni decisione di Hitler. Al contrario, Cartier (che si fonda sulle dichiarazioni "private" raccolte al processo di Norimberga) delinea l'immagine di Adolf Hitler per quella che realmente fu: ossia quella di un lucido, spietato e assolutamente autonomo tecnocrate della guerra, di un capo militare che, nella prima parte del conflitto, ebbe idee tanto geniali da conquistare l'Europa occidentale in pochi mesi, impresa mai riuscita a nessuno, e al quale l'intera casta militare degli junker prussiani obbedì ciecamente dal primo all'ultimo giorno di guerra. Uno studio controcorrente ancora oggi, poco diffuso nel nostro paese. Cartier era un democratico conservatore che visse l'occupazione nazista della Francia in prima persona, conobbe personalità di rilievo del Terzo Reich e affrontò la complessa e terribile storia di Hitler e del Nazionalsocialismo germanico con gli strumenti dello studioso indipendente, evidenziando un lato della storia della conquista del potere da parte tedesca: uno studio che ancora oggi fa scuola.
