L'autore si è proposto d'indagare "dal di dentro" l'atteggiamento del popolo tedesco sotto il regime di Hitler. Capi militari, soldati, semplici cittadini uomini e donne, persino ragazzi, sono esaminati in funzione del loro rapporto con un'ideologia che sovvertiva morale, costumi, atteggiamenti tradizionali, per inculcare in tutti l'orgoglio nazionale, la tanto decantata Volksgemeinschaft, l'unità del popolo, che doveva trasformare, nessuno escluso, in cittadini appartenenti a una razza superiore. Non solo gli "inferiori" dovevano essere eliminati ma l'io di ognuno doveva trasformarsi in moi. Una massa compatta, solidale anche nel crimine. Documentazioni, lettere, testimonianze inoppugnabili svelano - con episodi inediti e di indimenticabile efficacia - come la maggior parte dei tedeschi fosse "drogata" da una dottrina che esaltava l'orgoglio della Germania. "Questo libro - scrive l'autore - si concentra sull'aspetto costruttivo e solidale che spinse a un omicidio di massa".
