He has been drawing manga since he was four years old and for most of his professional career has created two series simultaneously. The stories to many of these were co-written in collaboration with his former editor Takashi Nagasaki. Urasawa has been called one of the artists that changed the history of manga and has won numerous awards including the Shogakukan Manga Award three times the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize twice and the Kodansha Manga Award once. By December 2021 his various works had over 140 million copies in circulation worldwide. Urasawa's first major work was illustrating the action series Pineapple Army 1985-1988 which was written by Kazuya Kudo. The first serial that he wrote and illustrated himself and his first major success was the sports manga Yawara! 1986-1993. He then illustrated the adventure series Master Keaton 1988-1994 which was written by Hokusei Katsushika and Nagasaki and created the sports manga Happy! 1993-1999. The thriller Monster 1994-2001 was his first to receive international acclaim and success which continued with the science fiction mystery 20th Century Boys 1999-2006. Following the acclaimed Pluto 2003-2009 which is a re-imagining of Astro Boy by Osamu Tezuka one of Urasawa's biggest influences he and Nagasaki created the mystery series Billy Bat 2008-2016. Osamu Tezuka 3 November 1928 - 9 February 1989 was a Japanese manga artist cartoonist and animator. Born in Osaka Prefecture his prolific output pioneering techniques and innovative redefinitions of genres earned him such titles as "the Father of Manga" "the Godfather of Manga" and "the God of Manga". Additionally he is often considered the Japanese equivalent to Walt Disney who served as a major inspiration during Tezuka's formative years. Though this phrase praises the quality of his early manga works for children and animations it also blurs the significant influence of his later more literary gekiga works. Tezuka began what was known as the manga revolution in Japan with his New Treasure Island published in 1947. His output would spawn some of the most influential successful and well-received manga series including the children mangas Astro Boy Princess Knight and Kimba the White Lion and the adult-oriented series Black Jack Phoenix and Buddha all of which won several awards. Tezuka died in 1989. A museum was constructed in Takarazuka dedicated to his memory and life works and Tezuka received many posthumous awards. Astro Boy known in Japan by its original name Mighty Atom is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Osamu Tezuka. It was serialized in Kobunsha's Sh nen from 1952 to 1968. The 112 chapters were collected into 23 tank bon volumes by Akita Shoten. Dark Horse Comics published an English translation in 2002. The story follows Astro Boy an android young boy with human emotions who is created by Umataro Tenma after the recent death of his son Tobio. Eventually Astro is sold to a robot circus run by Hamegg but is saved from his servitude by Professor Ochanomizu. Astro becomes a surrogate son to Ochanomizu who creates a robotic family for Astro and helps him to live a normal life like an average human boy while accompanying him on adventures. Astro Boy has been adapted into three anime series produced respectively by the first incarnation of Mushi Production and its direct successor Tezuka Productions. The manga was originally produced for TV as Astro Boy the first popular animated Japanese television series that embodied the aesthetic that later became familiar worldwide as anime. After enjoying success abroad Astro Boy was remade in the 1980s as New Mighty Atom known as Astroboy in other countries and again in 2003. In November 2007 he was named Japan's envoy for overseas safety. An American computer-animated film based on the original manga series by Tezuka was released on October 23 2009. The series was also among the first to embrace mass merchandise including action figures collectible figurines food products clothing stamps and trading cards. By 2004 the franchise had generated $3 billion in merchandise sales. Astro Boy is one of the most successful manga and anime franchises in the world and has become Tezuka's most famous creation making it Tezuka's best-selling manga and one of the best-selling manga series of all time. The 1963 anime series became a hit on television in Japan and the United States. Astro Boy has been praised for its importance in developing the anime and manga industry. It has been featured on numerous greatest anime of all time lists and has inspired many other influential authors in the creation of manga. Viz Media LLC paperback

Foreword by the Mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This book was published simultaneously in Japanese and English editions. By August 1945 the Allies' Manhattan Project had produced two types of atomic bombs and the 509th Composite Group of the United States Army Air Forces USAAF was equipped with the specialized Silverplate version of the Boeing B-29 Superfortress that could deliver them from Tinian in the Mariana Islands. Orders for atomic bombs to be used on four Japanese cities were issued on July 25. On August 6 one of its B-29s dropped a Little Boy uranium gun-type bomb on Hiroshima. Three days later on August 9 a Fat Man plutonium implosion-type bomb was dropped by another B-29 on Nagasaki. The bombs immediately devastated their targets. Roughly half of the deaths in each city occurred on the first day. Large numbers of people continued to die from the effects of burns radiation sickness and other injuries compounded by illness and malnutrition for many months afterward.
