From wikipedia: William Walker May 8 1824 – September 12 1860 was an American physician lawyer journalist and mercenary who organized several private military expeditions into Mexico and Central America with the intention of occupying the local nations and establishing slave-hold colonies an enterprise then known as "filibustering". Walker usurped the presidency of Nicaragua in July 1856 and ruled until May 1 18571 when he was forced out2 of the presidency and the country by a coalition of Central American armies. Handsome image of this obelisk monument commemorating the 21st Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry's contribution at the Battle of Chickamauga signed boldly by photographer Tillinghast in ink in the margin at lower right. On the verso he pens bold and large: "Monument of / 21st Wis. Infantry. / Chickamauga. / paraph / Taken on the battle / field by A.R. Tillinghast / July 15 1900." Whether Tillinghast was a professional or simply a talented amateur we have not been able to ascertain but this warrants further research. Quite handsome and unusual. unknown

Begins: '1st. Regiment of Life Guards. Peninsular Waterloo. Scarlet Facings Blue. Returned from France January 1816.' A typical entry reads '58th. the Rutlandshire Regt. of Foot. Gibraltar with the Castle and Key. Montis Insigna sic Calpe. The Sphinx with the words. Egypt Maida Salamanca Vittoria Pyrenees Nivelle Orthes Peninsula. Returned from Ceylon June 1839. Facings Black.' Lists the first 99 regiments of foot as well as the rifle brigade West India regiments Ceylon Rifle Regiment Cape Mounted Riflemen and others. With regard to Philpot's desire to obtain 'employment under Her Majesty's Government' as a 'public servant' he has applied to McLeod 'for a testimonial as to his Conduct and Efficiency as an Officer during the seven years he served in the 74th Highlanders': ''There has been but one opinion of him in the Corps which was that he was a most able active intelligent and gallant officer possessed of much common sense and sound judgment. He served throughout the Kaffir War of 1851-52-53 and on the death of Lt Colonel Fordyce in action in the Waterbloop - he was left for some time the only surviving officer in a most dangerous position encumbered with wonded and took an active part in the attack to cover their removal which was completely effected under his orders'. He describes another occasion in which Philpot 'volunteered to carry an order to a detached party' before noting his departure from the regiment 'as a Captain to the great regret of all ranks on account of ill health in India'. Despite his glowing testimonial surprisingly little is to be discovered concerning Philpot. McLeod has an entry in Who Was Who. Malta. 7 January 1896. unknown
