Spine slightly marred. Hardbound. William Freeman Vilas (1840-1908). Born in Vermont, he moved with his parents to Madison, Wisconsin. In 1860 he commenced practice of law in Madison. He enlisted early in the Civil War, and served as Captain of Company A, Twenty-third Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, and afterward major and lieutenant colonel of the regiment. He was later Postmaster General of the U.S. in the Cabinet of President Grover Cleveland (1885-1888) and then became Secretary of the Interior (1888-1889). Elected from Wisconsin, as a Democrat, to the U.S. Senate (1891-1897). Back home, he was regent of the University of Wisconsin (1898-1905) and was a member of the commission to provide for the construction of the State capitol in 1907. AMERICANA BOX 2
