Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original illustrated wrappers. Chipping on top edge and front cover. Occasional foxing on pages. Overall a good copy. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 15 cm). In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). 103 p., b/w plates (19 unnumbered b/w plates and 1 map). First edition of this extremely rare first-hand and historically significant eyewitness account of the Syrian and the Suez Canal Operations during the Great War by an Ottoman soldier and statesman. Erden describes in this book his return to Istanbul after his military attaché duty in Paris and his departure to Damascus to join the 4th Army in Syria under the command of Cemal Pasha (1872-1922). He then discusses the Arab Revolt in Hejaz and its possible effects on the Ottoman Empire (The Arab Uprising was initiated by Sharif Hussein bin Ali in June 1916 during the Great War with the aim of creating an independent and united Arab state comprising of Aden in Yemen and Aleppo in Syria against the Imperial Ottoman). After disclosing his views and the actions of the army in the region, he goes on to describe Jerusalem, the Suez Canal, and the wars that took place there. Erden gave new information on the reasons and results of the Canal operation, the condition of the Turkish army along Palestine and Syria fronts, the relations among the Turkish staff, and the nature of the Arab revolt through his views and observations in Egypt, Palestine, and Syria fronts accumulated as he was Cemal Pasha's chief of staff. Erden was a Turkish soldier and war historian. After graduating from the Military Academy in 1903, he worked in the units and headquarters in Yemen, as the staff of the 3rd Corps in the Balkan War and as the Paris Military Attaché. During the Great War, he served as the Chief of Staff of the 4th Army within the entourage of Admiralty Minister Cemal Pasha in Syria. Özege 16174. Kursun p. 51.
8vo., First Edition, with fine portrait frontispiece and 65 plates and maps (a number full-page) on 39; original red cloth, gilt back, red top (lightly faded as often), a near fine copy in unclipped dustwrapper. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR ON FRONT FREE ENDPAPER. One of the key military memoirs of the twentieth century, this is as much an autobiography as a soldier's account of war. Written entirely by 'Monty' himself (in pencil, as so many of his official communications were composed), this characteristically straightforward (and often politically outspoken) account covers boyhood, early service with the Warwickshires, WWII and beyond (notably, about a third of the work covers his post-war career as CIGS and after). For technical military detail we look to the author's other works; here we find the simple account of a 'soldier who kept the faith'. A great read from one of the unforgettable leaders of his times. SIGNED COPIES ARE VERY SCARCE IN THIS CONDITION. Baxter 268; Enser, p.277.
First English edition, 4to, x, [11]-28pp., with errata slip pasted to terminal leaf, 31 engraved plates containing maps and plans (5 of which are folding), all with some element of hand-colouring, plate 21 with a loose engraved errata overlay, some foxing and light browning, contemporary half calf, marbled boards, slight splitting to upper joint, rubbed at head of spine and corners. In the 'Editor's Preface to the German and French Editions,' Frederick the Great's strategic prowess as displayed in these Instructions is described thus: "Here Frederic [sic] fully displays the art, by which he was so constantly victorious:?the manner of misleading the Enemy respecting the real point of attack?even the art of rapidly passing from the defensive to the offensive state, keeping in view all the chances of success. By these principles, peculiarly his own, he was enabled often to accomplish great actions with small comparative means."

Halow [1927-2014] " Worked as a court reporter during the U.S. Army's courts-martial at Dachau where he witnessed some of the most gripping testimony from some of the most sensational trials of the postwar years. He soon saw the flaws and abuses of these trials: reliance upon ex post facto law and broad conspiracy theories; abuse of prisoners during interrogation; and the encouragement of perjured testimony by concentration camp survivors. Four decades later he reviewed the long-classified records of these trials and found astounding confirmation of his misgivings about them." - dust jacket. Book clean and unmarked with light wear. xxiv, 179 pages. Index, bibliography, references, glossary. Almost one hundred black and white reproductions of photos and documents. Two fold-out maps. "This study was exciting and personally rewarding to me. I treasure the many Dutch and Canadian friends who so patiently worked with me to reconstruct the events of half a century ago. I still think it highly important that the record of Canadian actions in helping to throw off the Nazi yoke in the Netherlands be accurately and fully told to Canadian and Dutch peoples before we have all passed on. But this publication is really devoted to the 363 killed and 1760 other casualties suffered by the South Saskatchewan Regiment in the Second World War, to the other units involved in the liberation of Kamp Westerbork, but most of all to the 876 prisoners, mainly Jewish, we helped to liberate in Kamp Westerbork, the 4000 or so who passed through this transit camp to hell, but lived, and to the more than 103,000 who did not." - Foreword. After serving in WWII Professor Law [1922-2011] moved on to a career at Queen's University where he established the Business School's microcomputer lab in the 1980s, where this bookseller had the opportunity to meet him. Clean and unmarked with light wear. A quality copy of this important and highly-detailed study. Book

2 vols., 8vo., First Edition, with a folding facsimile on blue stock and a double-page map as frontispieces, a folding map and a double-page map, and two large folding maps (one coloured in outline) in pocket at rear of second volume, some very mild occasional foxing, fore-edges dusty; original decorative cloth blocked in blind, gilt backs, uncut, covers moderately soiled (boards to volume two stained with black ink), volume one neatly rebacked with original backstrip (faded) laid down else a good, firm, sound copy of a work scarce in any condition. This volume bears the neat contemporary signature of 'Frank Cooper' and the following holograph inscription: 'Maps drawn by my brother Harry, who was with Colonel Colley as Adjutant of Transport. Col. Colley, afterwards Sir G[eorge]. Pomeroy Colley, was killed in the fatal action of Majuba Hill in Natal fighting against the Boers'. Henry Brackenbury was Assistant Military Secretary to Wolseley; Cooper (as stated correctly above) was sometime Adjutant of Transport during the campaign. The official records were placed by Wolseley at Brackenbury's disposal 'without reservation' and augmented by the latter's private journal which he kept whilst serving at headquarters. The account of Captain Glover's expedition is taken entirely from letters between Wolseley and himself. The missions of Captains Butler and Dalrymple are described from their own letters. Frank Cooper's signature is dated 1874; the Battle of Majuba Hill took place on 27th February 1881 during the First South African War (this action was, incidentally, the last occasion on which British regimental colours were carried into battle). It would seem, therefore, that this was originally Frank Cooper's copy (until at least 1881) which then passed into the Brackenbury family. It was then in the library of Major-General Charles Booth Brackenbury (1831-1890) and bears his signature on the half-title of the second volume. The author's elder brother, he spent his career in the Royal Artillery culminating in his appointment as Director of Artillery Studies at Woolwich, from which position no-one did more to spread sound ideas throughout the service on tactical changes demanded by the advancement in weapons technology. On Charles's death this copy passed to his youngest son, Hereward Irenius Brackenbury and bears his engraved armorial bookplate on front paste-down of first volume. Hereward Brackenbury was a talented engineer and director of the prominent defence contractor Hawthorn Leslie & Co. The Brackenbury family was well represented in nearly all the British wars of the nineteenth century. THIS IS AN IMPORTANT AND DESIRABLE FAMILY COPY SHOWING MULTIPLE ASSOCIATIONS WITH THE AUTHOR OF A CLASSIC VICTORIAN CAMPAIGN MEMOIR.
Single sheet, a near fine copy. Signed simply 'Wavell' in the writer's usual manner, the letter is written to Geoffrey Moore, founder of the Buccaneers Cricket Club, and demonstrates the soldier's keen and continuing interest in the sport. It is noteworthy that Wavell was particularly proud of his membership of the MCC at Lords. The letter confirms that Wavell will propose the toast at the Buccaneers' annual dinner (held at Lords). Field-Marshal Earl Wavell (1883-1950) was one of the twentieth century's most distinguished British soldiers. Following considerable success against the Italians in North Africa, his career reached its peak with his appointment as Supreme Allied Commander, South West Pacific, ABDA (American, British, Dutch and Australian) Command in 1942 and subsequently as an outstanding Viceroy and Governor General of India from 1943-1947. He was recognised also as a scholar, compiling the well-known anthology of poetry 'Other Mens's Flowers' (1944). The bulk of Wavell's papers are now housed in the Liddell Hart Centre for Military Archives at King's College, London. Founded in 1930, The Buccaneers is one of the oldest and most famous 'wandering' clubs in English cricket (a 'wandering' club has no fixed home ground but plays as an away team relying on the hospitality of the home clubs against which it competes). The Club's history has been written twice, by Clifford Bax in 1956 and more recently by Howard Spencer. ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS SIGNED BY WAVELL ARE EXTREMELY SCARCE.
8vo., First Edition thus, with portrait frontispiece, 28 plates on 14, 22 maps (several full-page) in the text, 2 large folding maps and coloured front and rear endpaper reproductions of sketch-maps by Rommel; handsomely bound in full dark red crushed morocco, sides with gilt frame border, back with raised bands, second and fourth compartments lettered and ruled in gilt, all other compartments tooled in gilt, gilt top, hand-made endpapers, ribbon marker, in custom-made-slip-case, an elegant copy ideal as a gift or for presentation. 'No commander in history has written an account of his campaigns to match the vividness and value of Rommel's'. Hart was in no doubt about the responsibility of his task, the more so since much of this unique material had to be painstakingly reassembled from its various hiding-places safe from Hitler's eyes. Half a century later, the brilliance of Hart's achievement is undimmed. An outstanding record from one of the greatest commanders of the war. SCARCE IN THIS CONDITION. Enser, p.374.
