The volume, which draws on the accumulated expertise of nine American and British scholars, emphasizes the actual techniques of fighting and practical concerns as the use of commands, music in warfare, the use of "dog-tags", and ritual on the battlefield.

Binding is solid and square, covers have sharp corners, exterior shows nothing but light edge wear, text/interior is clean and free of marking of any kind. Dust jacket is worn with edge wear and tears at top and bottom spine. Unpaginated, about 100 pages with a great many large b&w and some color photos, 30 plates in all, reproduced from original Kodachromes: notably bright reds and deep blacks.
