Stephenson surgeon of the Fourteenth Illinois regiment and General S. A. Hurlbut were present and appear to have been involved in the formation of the national rules. Rare imprint. No institutional holdings according to WorldCat/OCLC. The American Antiquarian Society Library holds a similarly titled GAR publication regarding a meeting held a month later December 21 1866 pertaining only to the Department of the Massachusetts. Cav." signed on front free endpaper; signed again on the title-page. amd possibly in the Preface. The 12th Indiana Cavalry later became the 127th Indiana Cavalry. The 12th was mustered in 1863 and saw a lot of action in Tennessee Alabama Louisiana and Georgia. His third inked name is clearly "Reed". He sometimes appears in the roster as "Read". According to the roster he was mustered out Mar. 31 1864; however the Lt. Col. lead a raid on the town of Vienna p now New Hope Alabama on May 29 1864. Col Reed was from Monticello White County IN. This has rebound - by a previous caring owner very professionally alternatively a librarian--- original pages in a newer binding. Blue denim color binding titling on spine in a red background gold titling with some nice gold stripes head / foot / top / bottom of spine . small repair done on title page looks like something was clipped & the page was stabilized with some sort of Japanese paper . In pencil --There is the name Frank D. Bailey West Newbury Mass zhandwritten with pencil on first page. Pages are very nice but are lightly tanned from age. Very nice copy of an original book in a new suit/ bindings these typically were not issued with dust covers / jackets. Bound to style in 19th-century quarter red straight-grained morocco over 19th-century marble paper boards<br/> <br/> Provenance: Hubert Hudson Texas State Senator for Brownsville 1957-1963<br/> <br/> A rare report detailing the failed Mexican mission to rein in the Republic of Texas following the Texan Revolution.<br/> <br/> "In the fall of 1836 the Mexican government attempted with complete lack of success another expedition into Texas." Streeter "Face-saving explanation for Mexico's failure against the despised Texans in 1836-7." Howes This official pamphlet details the failed Mexican expedition into the Republic of Texas over the period of October 21 1836 to March 14 1837. Barreiro an army commissioner in charge of the operation concludes that the "ridiculo" Texan rebels were far less dangerous than the hostile desert terrain. "No es el numero del exercito de Tejas el temible. Bien despreciable y ridiculo es ese peloton de aventureros que piensan que es como andar en cacerias de fieras haberselas con veteranos valientes y aguerridos: es el clima son los desiertos horrorosos son los rios invadeables son los pantanos." It is not the number of the Texas army that is fearsome. Very despicable and ridiculous is that platoon of adventurers who think that it is like going on wild beast hunts dealing with brave and seasoned veterans: it is the climate it is the horrible deserts it is the uncrossable rivers the swamps. Texas had declared its independence on March 2 1836 a culmination of the Texan Revolution which had begun on October 2 1835. The United States did not diplomatically recognize the Republic of Texas until March of 1837 near the publication date of this pamphlet. Wade who submitted many of the reports as the superintendent of weapons casting and experiments at government foundries at top of title page. He had this book sent to the original owner Easton Hodgkinson whose name he wrote at the top of the title page. A copy of a letter dated from 1856 that is about the book and signed by W. Wade and addressed to Easton Hodgkinson is attached to a string that was run down the spine. Hard cover published by Henry Carey Baird in 1856. No dust jacket. Black covers with embossed designs on front and back and gilt lettering and design on spine. Covers have some scuffing corners are bumped and worn and front cover is torn at top along the spine. Back cover has an indentation and tear along top edge and two tears along side edge. Spine is cocked some and is worn at the ends with some tearing and fraying. Endpapers have some writing in pencil. There are some pencil markings on title page and several other pages. Endpapers have foxing and spotting. Pages have some tanning and some pages have spotting. There are two foldout drawings in middle of book. Side edge of pages has some staining near bottom corner and bottom edge of pages has some soiling by corner. Book is in good condition. 428 pages 5.8 lb.; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 428 pages; Signed by Author . Henry Carey Baird hardcover
