2092Paris: N. Matzneff / Editions Orion 1930. ONE OF THE RAREST AND MOST BEAUTIFUL ILLUSTRATED BOOKS OF THE 20TH CENTURY. Illustrated with 35 original etchings with aquatint and drypoint by Edy Legrand. In these prints the artist conjures the exotism dreaminess and voluptuousness of the Song of Songs one of the great love poems in world literature. Edition limited to 110 copies beautifully printed in two colors on fine Montval wove paper all of which have four suites of the etchings 140 etchings in all: the first state without text the second state without text the final state without text and the final state with text. It is extremely unusual that the entire edition of a modern illustrated book would include the illustrations in multiple states but it is easy to see why the publisher adopted that policy in this instance: we can perceive what an incredibly talented and painstaking artist Legrand was as he worked each plate from the original sketch to the finished design. Folio. Loose as issued in original wraps. Housed in a custom-made cloth folding case with extra cloth folders for each of the extra suites. FINE AND BRIGHT with no defects. This book was included in the groundbreaking exhibition of livres d'artiste held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1936 and is illustrated in Monroe Wheeler's catalogue "Modern Painters and Sculptors as Illustrators". 19281271Leningrad: printed by the author typography of the Academy of Arts 1928. 47 1 pp. 245x18 cm. One of 1200 copies. Original illustrated wrappers. Few tears of the spine otherwise in a very good condition.
First and only edition. The book summarizes the works of Solomon Yudovin 1892-1954 Jewish Belorussian and Soviet artist the distinct representative of 'the Jewish renaissance'.
Solomon Yudovin was no doubt one of the figures who helped to define and picture the face of Jewish art of the first quarter of the 20th century. As a young man he participated in the ethnographic expeditions organized by his uncle Semyon An-Skiy 1863-1920 and the Jewish Historical Ethnographical Society across the Pale of Settlement in Ukraine and Belarus. The goal of these expeditions held in 1912-1914 was to capture the everyday life and culture of the people across the Pale. Yudovin worked as a photographer artist and secretary and as a result had collected a lot of data on the Jewish household items ritual accessories gravestones matzevah synagogue paintings Jewish ornaments etc. These ornaments pictured by Yudovin have influenced all the artists who were working in traditional style at the time like Rybak and Lissitzky and became an important element of Jewish visual culture. He experimented with photos from the expeditions in the method of photo-impressionism but soon has found his main style in woodcuts and linotypes.
Yudovin was active in Vitebsk in the first years after the revolution of 1917 where he collaborated with Marc Chagall. In 1918 he participated in the decoration of the city of Vitebsk for the parade of the first anniversary of October Revolution - the occasion for which Chagall famously did an open call to all the local artists in the newspaper 'Izvestiya Vitebskogo Gubernskogo Soveta' urging them to produce 'big and expressive' posters. Next year Chagall and Yudovin participated in the exhibition of Jewish artists in Vitebsk. In 1941-42 Yudovin created a series of woodcuts picturing Leningrad under siege and the series became one of his best-known works.
This book consists of 49 woodcuts and also includes the list of all the woodcuts and linotypes produced by the artist to the day. printed by the author, typography of the Academy of Arts unknown

177956131Providence: Southwick and Wheeler 1779. Folio broadsheet approx. 16" x 10" text in triple column beneath the running head; lower outside corners eroded with loss to the beginnings and/or ends of about ten lines about 20-25 words mostly on the recto; all else very good. With the ink signature of Theodore Foster 1752-1828 U.S. Senator from Rhode Island 1790-1803. Solomon Southwick had published the Mercury a newspaper in Newport until that town was occupied by the British in 1778. Southwick then buried his printing press and types and eventually sought safety in Providence. Once in Providence Southwick decided to continue to print however the only way he could supply himself with materials was through John Carter the owner of the Providence Gazette. Apparently there was a dispute between Carter and Southwick as to who would get to purchase the printing press and types left by the recently deceased John Waterman. This was the only printing press and type available because the British had seized all the printing materials that had been previously ordered. Apparently Carter purchased the press and sold it to Southwick on the condition that the press "should not be set up in town or used to oppose a friend in business who had served him in distress." At first Southwick started his business in Rehoboth Massachusetts but secured a one-half interest in printing for the state of Rhode Island. In March of 1779 in company with Bennett Wheeler he began to publish in Providence The American Journal and General Advertiser using the Updike house next to John Carter for their office. There was much bad feeling displayed by Carter at Southwick's alleged treachery and Carter printed a story in the Providence Gazette about the incident and Southwick printed a response to Carter. Carter soon printed his rebuttal to the charges that Southwick made and once again Southwick printed his answer. This rare printing was Southwick's answer to Carter's rebuttal. It takes up the entire front side of this broadsheet and one-and-one-half columns on the back. Also included on this rare broadsheet is a Full Pardon offered by General George Washington to all the deserters in the Army that wanted to come back but feared to do so because they thought that they would be severely punished. There is also news from Charleston about Colonel Campbell's expedition from Savannah to Augusta Georgia. Not found in OCLC; but apparently there are copies at Brown University and the R.I. Historical Society. Southwick and Wheeler unknown

Refs: Sabin 55847; Blockson 10165 First edition
First published in 1853 Twelve Years a Slave is the memoir and slave narrative of Solomon Northup as told to and complied by David Wilson. Northup was a black man who was born free in New York. His narrative tells of his kidnapping and sale into slavery in the Deep South. He was in bondage for 12 years in Louisiana before he was able to secretly get information to friends and family in New York who in turn secured his release with the aid of the state. Northup's account provides extensive details on the slave markets in Washington D.C. and New Orleans and describes at length cotton and sugar cultivation and slave treatment on major plantations in Louisiana.
Northup's narrative confirmed Stowe's own fictional portray about slavery in Louisiana in Uncle Tom's Cabin. Northup's account describes the daily life of slaves at Bayou Boeuf in Louisiana their diet and living conditions the relationship between master and slave and the means that slave catchers used to recapture runaways. In his narrative Northup compared his life in slavery to his life as a free man in a free state. While there were hundreds of such kidnappings he was among the few persons who gained freedom again. Northup's biography on his 12 year plight was the Best Picture Winner in the 2012 Academy Awards. Auburn : Miller, Orton & Mulligan hardcover

195929047London: Macmillan & Co. LTD 1959. First Edition. Cloth. Fine. First Edition. 2 V-VI 1595-1670 pp. 10 3/8 x 7 3/8 inches. Modern black cloth printed paper spine label. Bookplate of Andras Gedeon on front pastedown. Cloth. "The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 1977 was divided one half jointly to Roger Guillemin and Andrew V. Schally "for their discoveries concerning the peptide hormone production of the brain" and the other half to Rosalyn Yalow "for the development of radioimmunoassays of peptide hormones.Rosalyn Yalow was a nuclear physicist. She developed radioimmunoassay RIA together with doctor Solomon Berson. RIA is used to measure small concentrations of substances in the body such as hormones in the blood. Yalow and Berson tracked insulin by injecting radioactive iodine into patients' blood. Because the method is so precise they were able to prove that type 2 diabetes is caused by the body's inefficient use of insulin. Previously it was thought that the disease was caused by a lack of insulin." Nobel Prize Org

The most often referenced paper by Yalow and Berson is their 1960 paper see below published in JCI "where for the first time they described the pattern and quantity of insulin released in response to ingestion of sugar. The paper included data for normal subjects Type II diabetics and patients with a variety of other disorders. This long paper contains many important discoveries." Straus p 151

"It is not surprising that the 1960 article "Immunoassay of endogenous plasma insulin in man" by Yalow and Berson holds a record as one of the most cited articles ever published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation. While a skeptic might note that most of the frequently cited articles in the literature are focused on methodology in this case while the paper superficially appears to be only a description of a method to assay insulin it actually marks a revolution in biology and medicine.Immunoassays provided a method by which minute quantities of virtually any biologically interesting moldecules present in blood or other fluids could be measure with sensitivity and specificity even in the presence of hundreds of thousands of other substances.they successfully applied the technique of immunoassay to the analysis of many other hormones and substances leading to breakthrough insights into multiple disease states." Kahn and Roth p 1051

We believe the present paper is a fundamental building block because it was a pre-cursor to the 1960 work showing for the first time that insulin could be measured in human rather than animal blood. "It took Yalow and Berson several years of work including detailed studies and mathematical models of the quantitative aspects of the reaction between insulin and antibody and evaluation of the species specificity of available antisera that they had raised in guinea pigs and rabbits before theoretical concepts of the RIA method could be translated into measurements of circulating insulin. They honed the technique with measurements of beef and other animal insulinis using antibody in the plasma of their human subjects. Finally in their 1959 paper that appeared in Nature as here they were measuring the insulin in human blood." Straus p151

It is interesting to note that the establishment found their work to be implausible: "Immunologists of the mid 1950s did not believe that insulin was immunogenic - hence the JCI rejection." of a 1955 a paper Yalow and Berson submitted to JCI that laid the groundwork for the insulin immunoassay was rejected for publication.

"Yalow was the second woman after Gerty Cori and the first American-born woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
