A fragile and scarce item of Spiritualist Vermont and California interest. No copies located.Solomon Jewett was one of the most earnest and grandiose of all believers and practitioners of Spiritualism in 19th century America. Born and raised in Vermont he became a wealthy sheep farmer in both Vermont and California. After losing his wife of seven years he became interested in Spiritualism. He also traveled extensively in Europe and other places picking up his further beliefs as he went along. Soon enough he was referring to himself as a “Shepherd of Vermont and California†“Indian Healer†“Doctor of Magnetism†and “Medical Doctor.†He soon began to claim that he could channel Washington and Lincoln among many others. "He also associated with and befriended a spirit artist Wella P. Anderson and his wife Lizzie “Pet†Anderson a medium who worked in New York City and Oakland California. Jewett acquired from them eighteen pencil portraits that depict well-known historical and mythical figures spanning many geographical locations and historical times that apparently “visited†the artist under the influence of Jewett’s presence" Henry Sheldon Museum. He assembled a large collection of Spirit art and photographs and that collection remains extant in The Henry Sheldon Museum of Vermont History. Jewett died in 1905 N.p. unknown

194221385Brooklyn NY: S. Davidman. Very Good. 1942. First Edition. Stapled wraps. moderate external soiling single-staple binding solid internally clean. "Subway Library" No. 1 Series A small pocket-size publication No. 1 in the "Subway Library" series published by the author who later went by the name Solomon Davidman. Noted as "translated from Yiddish" it's a short tale the booklet is only 40 pages including the covers about a Jewish merchant Mr. Julius Jackson nee Judah Jacobs a Ukranian immigrant living in Queens but with a successful shop on 42nd Street in Manhattan apparently a jewelry business although it's never stated explicitly. One day while commuting to work on the subway a headline in a Yiddish-language newspaper in the hands of another commuter -- "A Jew's Head" -- catches his eye and troubles him. On his lunch break he wanders down to the Lower East Side site of his first business in America as a watchmaker finds a copy of the newspaper and reads the story which is presented as a story-within-the-story a horrific account of a Nazi massacre of Jews in a Ukranian village. It shocks him deeply and brings on a kind of guilt-ridden lament for the dwindling importance of the Yiddish language within the Jewish culture he regrets for example that he never taught his children to read the language and is upset that his wife has moved his collection of Yiddish books to their cellar and for the broader danger to Jewish culture itself represented by the Nazis. In the end he is re-invigorated by his Jewish heritage and faith and in response throws himself wholeheartedly into the war effort: "Everything for the winning of the war! Everything to destroy Fascism! Everything in defense of the Jewish people!" Davidman 1900-1975 continued to issue "Subway Library" titles at least until 1949; a search of OCLC turns up a total of seven titles in English and a few in Yiddish all very scarce as far as library holdings are concerned sometimes just single copies and never more than half a dozen or so. The very last publication credited to him in OCLC was published in 1975 the year of his death in Yiddish with the translated title "A Song to Yiddish." The address given for Davidman is in the Brighton Beach neighborhood of Brooklyn New York at that time populated mostly by first- and second-generation Jewish-Americans and following the war Holocaust survivors. The building at that address was built in 1928 and still stands today. Original red cloth titled in gilt on spine and front cover; dustjacket; 2162pp. A tight clean and unmarked copy Very Good or better. In the scarce pictorial dustwrapper toned with a few discreet mended tears at folds and brief losses at base of spine and corners; just VG.

A critical account of the Russian Revolution and its aftermath by a Bolshevik insider. Solomon though he describes himself as a rather ambivalent revolutionary served as official Secretary to his friend Leonid Krasin the First Commissar for Soviet Commerce and Industry from 1918 to 1923. This account written in self-imposed exile in Germany provides a highly critical view of the consolidation of Bolshevik power immediately after the Revolution. Includes a new author's preface specifically for the American edition in which he provides his justification for publishing this exposé: ".I was in a state of indecision as to whether I should reveal their the Boksheviks' workings.in the meantime the Soviet government continued its illegal practices. One terror after another fell upon the heads of the innocent Russian citizens.they made beggars of the peasants; millions were exiled and put to forced labor in the concentration camps; masses of people were shot without trial not only of the intelligensia but also the peasants and working class.such cruelties have been executed as would cause even Torquemada the deluded fanatic to grow pale." A valuable first-hand revolutionary memoir rather elusive in commerce - this is only the second copy we've seen or handled in thirty years and the only copy we've ever seen in the original dustwrapper. 84364.
