Decorative endpapers. Hebrew and Polish title pages. The Polish title page is a reprint of the first edition from 1925. Passover Haggadah with the "Sfas Emes" commentary by the Ger rebbe R. Judah Aryeh Leib Alter along with the "Tiferet Shlomo" commentary by R. Solomon Cohen of Radomsk. These were both leading Hasidic rebbes in 19th century Poland. Today Ger remains one of the largest Hasidic groups. Radomsk though was almost completely wiped out in the Holocaust. Text in Hebrew. Edges and corners badly rubbed. Several pages detached. This catalog was prepared to accompany the posthumous exhibition for John Altoon (1925- 1969) one of the Ferus Gallery artists that Walter Hopps worked with during the 1950's. Essay by Hopps. Inscribed by composer Leon Algazi on the front flyleaf: "A Maxine Piha bien amicalement L. Algazi. Paris le 30 sept. 1931." Leon Algazi wrote the musical score for the play which is reproduced in his holograph facsimile in its entirety following the printed text of the book. Salomon Rappoport known as Ansky or An-Ski 1863-1920 was born in Russia. He was a Jewish ethnologist and scholar specializing in European folk-lore. His play The Dybbuk or Between Two Worlds written in Yiddish is a study of demonic possession and the Hassidic doctrine of pre-ordained relationship. The play was first produced in the year of the author's death and productions in the original Yiddish and later Hebrew were performed in Moscow New York London and Paris.
