Concepito in una situazione di solitudine estrema, "Vita? o Teatro?" è il frutto di mesi di incessante lavoro di una giovane donna fuggita dalla Germania nazista che aveva voluto con quest'opera costruirsi un baluardo contro il caos del mondo. Oggi resta un monumento artistico e letterario, quasi un'opera d'arte totale di una forza sconvolgente, che viene pubblicato nella sua forma integrale.
