1908944T19London: William Heinemann 1908. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 9" by 6.5". None. A smart first edition of this scarce history of life in Europe after the Battle of Waterloo. First edition. Scarce work. Written as though it were a series of letters home this work explores European travel in the early nineteenth century following the Battle of Waterloo. Frye did not fight at Waterloo but visited there soon after the battle including a detailed perspective on life in Brussels and on the attitudes of the inhabitants in the aftermath. His European tour lasted four years through France Switzerland and Italy providing a record of Europe rebuilding after the Napoleonic Wars. Written by Major W. E. Frye. Edited with a preface by Salomon Reinach a French archaeologist religious historian and was a major figure in the Franco-Jewish establishment in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In the original full cloth binding. Externally smart with light rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities. Light fading to the spine with the odd small mark to the cloth. Internally firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot or pencil annotation. Minor age toning to the page edges. Further age toning and light spotting to the endpapers. Very Good William Heinemann hardcover

200115098Ashland: White Cloud Press 2001. First edition. Hardcover. A fine copy in bright slick red cloth over boards with gilt spine lettering in a near fine jacket. Signed and inscribed by Hatfield on the title page. Oregon Senator Mark Hatfield has consistently offered integrity and vision in a culture groping for meaning. Here he reveals compelling insights on his half century of public service. He offers hope purpose and perspective for the critical years ahead. His political life has been punctuated by strong stands; as Governor he was against the death penalty he was the lone Governor in the nation vocally opposing Johnson's administration's Vietnam policy. As a senator he opposed the military-industrial complex and the violence of the arms race. He also fought for housing employment education and basic human dignity. 254 pages illustrated<br /> from photographs. White Cloud Press hardcover
200154548Ashland OR: White Cloud Press 2001. First Edition. First Printing. very good very good. 254 illus. index. Inscribed by the author Hatfield. Against the Grain is a political and spiritual memoir of Senator Mark O. Hatfield the most progressive politician in the Republican Party since Abraham Lincoln covering his opposition to the Vietnam War successful drafting of the Soviet-American nuclear freeze legislation with Democratic Senator Ted Kennedy and his strong stands of conscience on health reform the death penalty and the balanced budget amendment which typically ran counter to the Republican mainstream. For five consecutive Senate terms Hatfield made his mark sometimes softly sometimes stridently fighting to serve the people of his country with honesty and devotion. Constantly opposing the military-industrial complex and the violence of the arms race he fought for housing employment education and basic human dignity. Throughout the book and in the final section on spirituality he offers hope insight and solutions to the greatest violences facing our age: militarism discrimination materialism and poverty. He envisions a world where the "political-industrial complex" no longer holds sway and candidates are judged on merit rather than marketed like toothpaste. In a world swerving out of control his solutions move away from big government toward enlisting people's hearts and minds. White Cloud Press unknown
