17573782<b><i>Scarce 1758 Almanac with Great F&I War Content</i></b><p>This almanac provides vivid insight into the impact of the French & Indian War on the American colonies. A fiery poetic narrative is carried through at the head of each monthly calendar page. For instance August's verse:</p><p>"This Month alas! Proclaims a double Woe</p><p>Both 'Swego and Lake George our Losses know;<br /></p><p>Fort William-Henry felt the fatal stroke</p><p>From faithless Villains. Who their promise broke</p><p>False to their Words our Men became their Prey;</p><p>And do we yet a just Revenge delay."</p><p>Following the calendar pages is a four-page "Continuation of the Historical Account of Affairs in North America…" which provides a summary of military actions from the loss of the fort at Oswego in August 1756 through "the last Day of August 1757 since which we can add no further Intelligence."</p><p>Also of significance is a full page devoted to "A short discourse on Comets with some account of that which is expected to appear in the present year 1758." It references Dr. Halley's work and includes this nod to the progress of the science of astronomy: "If therefore this comet return according to this period in 1758 and there is the greatest reason to think it will astronomy will then have something new to boast of." Halley's comet as it is now known did indeed appear on Christmas night 1758.</p><p>A rare almanac. RareBookHub notes only one listing: an auction in 1924 for which no price was given. 180519106Paris: Chez Janet 1805. Contemporary gold-tooled straight-grained red morocco spine decoratively gilt decorative double borders on both boards gilt edges brocade endpapers. 32mo. With 12 full-page engraved plates showing young people talking playing and courting. Exceptionally rare edition of this charming almanac for 1805 and 1806 with a calendar for one and a half year running from September 1805 to December 1806. This was done because the work followed after almanacs that used the French Republican Calendar 1793-1805 which ran from September to September instead of from January to December. Other than the calendar the almanac includes educational songs on friendship silence family and various emotions set to popular tunes and illustrated with 12 engraved plates. Together this was intended as a "School for adolescents" teaching young people about courting and various types of relationships. On the last page the eclipses of the sun and moon for 1806 are listed including those not visible in Europe. The almanac was also published for the years 1807 1808 and 1809 but all editions are very scarce today. We have only been able to find one other copy of the present 1805/1806 edition in sales records but it has not mentioned in any of the literature nor has it been recorded in institutions. With a contemporary annotation in Dutch on the first free flyleaf "Tis niet genoeg te beminen! maar best eerst wel te vezinnen!". The head of the spine has been bumped a round black stain on the back board. The work has been bound into one quire instead of two causing errors in the pagination. Otherwise in good condition.l Cf. 184566430Madras: Printed and published by Edmund Marsden at the Asylum Press Mount Road 1845. First edition. These local vade mecums annual publications produced using local materials are inevitably uncommon on the market. Although substantial at around 700 pages they have a low survival rate. That they were retained after their supersession is demonstrated by the fact that this copy has the presentation inscription dated in 1849 of the Massachusetts-born missionary and educator of Ceylon Revd Daniel Poor to the title page. Compendious covering the civil military and religious establishments including salaries; the legal administration; professional regulations including those for palankeen bearers; post office regulations and charges; ship arrivals and departures; births deaths marriages and estates probated within the presidency; this is an excellent source of reference for the understanding of the nature of the British administration in India. Octavo 225 x 148 mm. 3 hand-coloured plates of signal flags based upon Marryat's system. Contemporary sheep on marbled boards skilfully rebacked to style with the original label laid down. Slightly rubbed on the boards part of front free endpaper neatly excised typically somewhat browned and consequently brittle in the margins but overall a very good copy sensitively restored. hardcover

With 1 engraved hand-coloured folding plate showing different kinds of ships flags. Lacking 2 leaves. A rare issue of the Madras almanac a landmark in the history of British-Indian colonial printing before the Mutiny in 1857. Styled on European almanacs it is a great source of information on India and especially Madras in the years 1827-1829. The tradition of preparing and printing almanacs in India was quite new. The Madras almanac first printed in 1799 and initially called the Madras register and later until its demise in 1935 the Asylum Press almanac gives not only useful community information such as birth and death rates for 1827-1828 and domestic events but also offers glimpses into the British colonial and native Indian politics in India and the officers involved at that time. It therefore provided much important information for the British Indian colonists. Of special practical importance are the information and conversion tables for money weights and measures and also the tables of roads from Madras to principal towns and military stations in the region. The Madras Almanac a practical guide for the British-Indian colonist in 1829 now provides us with a window into Madras society in the period 1827 to 1829.The original sheepskin rubbed and the later paper covering it chipped corners bumped. The first volumes were published by Jan Dane but P. Gilissen took over after his death. Text of all pages printed within a frame with small corner pieces. 240 pp. Rare almanac for 1787 from a series of Berlin almanacs that appeared under various titles from 1769 to 1813. The almanacs could be acquired with etched plates illustrating the 12 months by the greatest German book illustrator of the 18th century Daniel Chodowiecki. He was director of the Berlin Academy of Art and worked for the Berlin Genealogischer Kalender or Almanac Généalogique from 1770 until his death in 1801 as well as for other almanac publishers. Chodowiecki was given free rein to choose the subjects of the 12 plates always in the calendar section of the annual almanacs. He often chose popular plays; in the present work his 12 illustrations depict scenes from the play Die Jäger Chasseurs by the German actor and playwright August Wilhelm Iffland 1759-1814 published in 1785. The subject of each illustration is explained in a 7-page "Explication des estampes". Also included is an engraved portrait of the young Princess Frederique Charlotte Ulrique Catharine of Prussia 1767-1820 who would become Duchess of York and Albany through her marriage to Prince Frederick King Georges second son in 1791. With the engraved coat-of-arms of the First French Empire on the title page and numerous letterpress tables. 16 832 pp. Attractively bound copy of this interesting French almanac for the year 1804-1805 An XIII i.e. year 13 counted from 1792 the period running from 23 September 1804 to 22 September 1805 according to the French Republican calendar which was used from 1793 to 1805. It is the last almanac using the terminology of the French Revolution before Napoleon Bonaparte 1769-1821 was crowned Emperor of the French on 2 December 1804.This almanac contains a wealth of information concerning the organization of the administration of the French state in the first year of the First French Empire. It comprises the names of the main dignitaries in France and abroad mentioning i.a. Thomas Jefferson as President of the United States of America the public officials in Paris and in the provinces the magistracy the clergy the army officers etc. as well as the usual subjects present in most almanacs such as annual fairs stagecoaches and timetables. It is concluded with an extensive index pp. 817-824 and a supplement pp. 825-832 which is not always present in most copies we could trace. The French publisher Laurent Étienne Testu 1765-1839 worked from 1788 for the French printer François Jean Noël Debure 1743-1802 who was the son-in-law of the French printer Laurent Charles dHoury 1723-1786. The family of DHoury had started with the annual publication of the famous Almanach royal which appeared under this title from 1700 to 1792.In 1791 Testu took over Debures printing house and in 1792 the title of the almanac was turned into Almanach national de France due to the new political situation caused by the French Revolution. After Napoleons coronation to emperor in 1804 its title was subsequently changed into Almanach imperial. Testu was appointed imperial publisher to Napoleon until his abdication in 1814.With the 19th-century oval bookplate of the French military Albert Le Lorier "Sous-Intendant Militaire" mounted on the front pastedown. The head of spine is slightly chipped/damaged the corners of the boards are slightly worn. The title page is slightly stained in the outer blank margin two text leaves Oo2 and Zz5 are re-attached probably replaced and their outer blank margins are slightly shortened otherwise a beautiful binding in very good condition.l Grand-Carteret Les almanachs français no. 1433. hardcover
1850L6D9JJJQJ3D4Saint Helena 1850. 8vo. George Gibb Government office Later black half morocco gold-tooled spine. With the title page printed in orange with the woodcut royal arms of the United Kingdom. 126 37 3 pp.; plus 3 1 blank pp. advertisements Only copy located of the 1850 almanac for the island of Saint Helena. Famous for being the prison of Napoleon Bonaparte in his final years the British island was used as a frequent stop by ships calling in for supplies. The almanac contains 37 pages listing the 930 ships that visited the island between 1 December 1848 and 30 November 1849. The development of steamships as well as the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 would almost completely deprive Saint Helena of its great importance as a supply station. In 1840 a naval station was established for the Royal Navy's campaign to suppress the slave trade. By 1 December 1849 15067 slaves had been brought to the island. Roughly a fourth died on the island with the rest emigrating to Jamaica British Guiana and Trinidad.Starting with the natural history of the island the almanac describes the geology of the island and lists the birds and fish that can be found. The rest of the almanac describes the feasts and festivals for the year 1850; lunar cycles; climate of the island; tides; the family of Queen Victoria; the British cabinet; the political military and ecclesiastical government of the island as well as the British naval command in West Africa; customs and judicial fees and penalties; ordinances; local institutions and societies; and a list of local miscellaneous information. The printer appears to have aimed for a full page; for instance placing a table of the height of several hills and peaks below the regional naval hierarchy instead of near the geographical description whereas a table of geographical distances is placed under the header "local miscellaneous information".With the bookplates of the barrister Alexander Meyrick Broadley 1847-1916 famous for being the defence lawyer for the Egyptian nationalist Ahmed 'Urabi 1841-1911 and of the legendary superspy Sidney George Reilly 1873-1925. Binding lightly worn at the hinges; a very good copy. unknown
