Original yellow or blue printed publisher's wrappers with the title printed on the spine and front within an ornamental border the coat of arms of arms of Zeeland on the back. 12mo. With the woodcut coat of arms of Zeeland on the title page of each volume 16 folding lithographed plates 17 full-page lithographed plates 2 leaves with musical annotations and several folding tables. 12 volumes. Original and complete series of 12 volumes of an important literary almanac. The work contains a calendar eclipses phases of the moon and sun the tides market days and fairs and postal and transportation facilities in the Province of Zealand as well as historical accounts reports and stories and poems. The folding plates include a city view Zierikzee castle Moermond near Renesse the ruins of the monastery Bethlehem near Elkerzee Castle Baarland 1840 Phases of the moon and eclipses the monastery Sion near Noordgouwe the bathhouse at Domburg and the town-hall at Hulst in the 16th century and in 1845.Many of the short stories and poems were written by well-known 18th and 19th-century Dutch authors such as Petronella Moens 1762-1843 Jacobus Bellami 1757-1786 and Carel Steven Adama van Scheltema 1815-1897. Another regular contributor was the minister Hendrik Marinus Christiaan van Oosterzee 1806-1877 who was the main editor together with J. Berman. Van Oosterzee lived at Elkerzee on the island Schouwen from 1830-1844 and later at Oirschot. In 1840 he became member of the Zeeuws Genootschap. In later years he edited the well-known yearbook Nehallennia 1849-1850 and the Jaarboek Zeeland 1852-1856.With a shelf mark label on the spine of each volume and a deaccession stamp from the Openbare bibliotheek Arnhem on the title page. The wrappers are frayed and creased with some losses the spines have been rubbed with some loss of material the 1838 1839 and 1841 issues have been rebound with the original wrappers mounted on the front board. The leaves are somewhat browned and foxed 2 of the plates are torn the spine of the 1841 issue has broken but the work is still complete the final volume is printed by a different publisher and therefore of a slightly larger size the 1837 issue still with the original prospectus leaf included. In der Jägerschen Buch- Papier- und Landkartenhandlung Contemporary green boards tooled in black with a central ornament on both boards surrounded by an ornamental border gilt edges. The work is housed in a decorative paper slipcase. With an engraved frontispiece an engraved title with a view of Frankfurt and 12 full-page numbered engraved plates in the calendar 1 for each month. 32 31 1 pp. Beautifully illustrated German literary pocket almanac which is among "den reizvollsten Erscheinungen dieser Art" Lanckoronska-Rümann. It was published from 1794-1825 and included copper engravings of widely read novels of the time as well as poems and aphorisms. The attractive and romantic plates in the present volume illustrate scenes from two books by Glatz: Iduna and Minona scenes from short stories by Kotzebue and scenes from Meyer's Unsere Kaufmannstöchter which was recently published at Leipzig in 1807. Extracts from these works are added as explanation to the plates. The work starts with a Jewish calendar then follows a list of works that were suitable to gift to young women at the end of the year. The present almaanc was likely also meant as a New Years gift as the engraved title says: "Geschenk zum Neuen Jahr". After the list follows the calendar and then the short stories poems and literary excerpts. Of interest to note is that almanacs in Germany often include suitable pieces in prose or poetry to use in a friend's Album Amicorum.The boards have been slightly rubbed some discolouration at the top where the boards are not covered by the slipcase. The slipcase is somewhat rubbed with a small hole at the bottom. Otherwise in good condition.l The children's world of learning 2528; Cf. The first two of the in total three published years of a traveller's almanac each focussing on a different province in the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Present here are North- and South-Holland. The third part published a year later was on Utrecht. Apart from the calendars and related information they contain a continuing geographical and historical description of the main cities in these provinces and itinerary information for the routes between these cities with travel times and distances and time-tables for public transportation. They are illustrated with maps views and plans of the town and routes. The present copy also includes blank leaves for annotations.With the bookplate of W.Ch. Roelofsz mounted on the front pastedown and his signature and shelf mark label on the title page. The edges and corners of the boards as well as the spine ends are somewhat scuffed a few scratched on the back board lacking the pencil. Some of the tissue paper guards are slightly foxed. 1820ST20124Paris: Louis Janet ca. 1820s. Necessaire: 120 x 70 mm 4 3/4 x 2 3/4". Calendar: 6 leaves; notebook: 4 leaves. Red straight-grain morocco lined with green satin containing a calendar in paper wrappers and notebook bound in matching pale green satin. Exterior decorative panel with central painted porcelain scene surrounded by wire filigree and pearls under a glass window. In a later red morocco case by Riviere & Son stamp-signed double ruled in gilt raised bands gilt-ruled compartments. Each calendar page with an engraved vignette. The necessaire additionally containing a pair of scissors with a delicately carved mother-of-pearl handle a silver mechanical pencil a small wooden pencil and an awl a tipped-in early 20th century auction listing not mentioning the latter two suggesting they are possible later additions. The notebook with the engraved bookplate of Sir David Lionel Goldsmid-Stern-Salomons dated 1908 to the front pastedown. Calendar leaves loose with fore-edges slightly creased other trivial defects but the leaves and binding fresh and quite clean. Nécessaire lightly worn from use with very short split to one tab closure; decorative panel with faint horizontal hairline crack visible only under magnification scattered losses to the paint on the porcelain panel but the fragile object surprisingly well preserved with all its components present. This charming calendar in a period nécessaire a small case for toiletries or as here personal implements provides a window into the life of a young woman during France’s Bourbon Restoration; wonderfully preserved in a custom Riviere box it was later in an important British collection. Small calendars and almanacs were popular New Years gifts for young French women starting in the late 18th century and by the second decade of the 19th century--when this calendar was likely produced--a thriving industry had grown up around their production. Louis Janet 1788-1840 who was in business as a bookseller and binder from 1810 through 1838 made much of his business in these small almanacs and keepsake books. In our charming almanac each month has an attractive engraving of a Neoclassical scene with graceful women in flowing drapery often accompanied by flitting putti. The nécessaire is similarly decorated: the central panel depicts a young female in a flowing gown leaning over a plinth inscribed with the text: "l’amilie me suffit" "friendship is enough for me". These attractive illustrations together with the contents of the nécessaire suggest its owner was a fashionable young woman. This delightful object is from the collection of David Lionel Salomons 1851-1925 whose books were chosen with notable discrimination the goal always being to obtain copies in very fine condition. The collection was particularly strong in 18th and 19th century illustrated books and attractive bindings. It is very likely given the dates of his collection that he was the owner who commissioned the pleasing Riviere & Son box in which the nécessaire currently resides. Louis Janet unknown

Complete set of the original series of this historical and literary almanac for Zeelandic Flanders mainly edited by Johan Hendrik van Dale 1828-1872 schoolmaster at Sluis whose name has become immortal as the composer of the first scholarly Dutch dictionary: De grote Van Dale. Apart from some traditional elements belonging to the almanac including a preface calendar feast days birthdays of the royal family eclipses tide-tables and market days the volumes contain historical accounts of important regional figures and events descriptions of local legends and short stories and poems from local authors. The first four volumes focus exclusively on Zeelandic Flanders and the final two on all of Zeeland. The plates include views of the tower and town hall at Sluis the Church of St. Bavo at Aardenburg Castle Windenburg in Dreischoor and a portrait of Colonel Joseph Ledel.The fourth volume is of particular interest because it includes the original invoice. The volume was bought from the well-known Amsterdam bookseller Frederik Muller on May 8 1857 by the Dutch Mennonite banker and art collector Christiaan Pieter van Eeghen 1816-1889 because he was particularly interested in the first article of the work on the Mennonite minister Ghysel Hebberecht 17th century.Volume 4 with the original invoice for this volume loosely inserted and the initials of Christiaan Pieter van Eeghen in pencil on the title page a contemporary ownership annotation below the opening plate in volume 5. Some of the boards are slightly browned and stained. The leaves are somewhat browned and occasionally slightly foxed the full-page plate in volume 5 has been mounted onto the leaf. With 1 engraved hand-coloured folding plate showing different kinds of ships flags. Lacking 2 leaves. A rare issue of the Madras almanac a landmark in the history of British-Indian colonial printing before the Mutiny in 1857. Styled on European almanacs it is a great source of information on India and especially Madras in the years 1827-1829. The tradition of preparing and printing almanacs in India was quite new. The Madras almanac first printed in 1799 and initially called the Madras register and later until its demise in 1935 the Asylum Press almanac gives not only useful community information such as birth and death rates for 1827-1828 and domestic events but also offers glimpses into the British colonial and native Indian politics in India and the officers involved at that time. It therefore provided much important information for the British Indian colonists. Of special practical importance are the information and conversion tables for money weights and measures and also the tables of roads from Madras to principal towns and military stations in the region. The Madras Almanac a practical guide for the British-Indian colonist in 1829 now provides us with a window into Madras society in the period 1827 to 1829.The original sheepskin rubbed and the later paper covering it chipped corners bumped. Publisher's red morocco gilt slipcase. 24 engraved vignette illustrations by Peter Maverick. 5-80 2pp with the calendar and memorandum pages i.e. pp. 41-64 engraved. 12mo. As least three issues of Longworth's Belles Lettres Repository were published for 1801-1803 with slightly varying titles: The American ladies & gentlemen's pocket almanac and elegant belles lettres repository. for 1801 Evans 36816; The American ladies' & gentlemen's pocket almanac and belles lettres repository for 1802 Shaw & Shoemaker 50194; and the present titled at the bottom of the front wrapper and as a caption title at the head of p. 5. An advertisement on the recto of the final leaf states: "This is the third Belles-Lettres-Repository. The two former have been done at the expense of the Publisher. this he hopes will be at the expense of lovers of neat things." At the bottom of the same page are descriptions of the plates and illustrations including the "frontispiece title-page i.e. front wrapper L'Allegro and finishing piece Il Penseroso form the cover" and the plate on the inside front wrapper being "Orpheus Eurydice and Cerberus." The vignettes by Maverick illustrate "select passages in Hayley's 'Triumphs of temper' with extracts underneath each. At the foot of each of these pages are the kalendar sic pages for 1803 and the intermediate spaces are ruled for belles-lettres selections &c. . these alternate with twelve other vignettes architectural and picturesque with ruled memorandum pages under each the whole engraved." Shaw and Shoemaker locate only the example at the Huntington which collates precisely as the present; i.e. wrappers comprised of two engraved plates mounted to each other i.e. the front wrapper being pages 1-4 and the text beginning on page 5 with a caption title at the head. An additional example with the same collation at the Hay Library Brown University confirms the work is complete as issued A scarce example in the original slipcase; American publisher's slipcases or sheaths from the 18th century are very rare. The earliest noted by Tanselle is on an 1801 edition of the American Ladies & Gentlemans Pocket Almanac Tanselle 01.01 and plate 9. Shaw 2551 dating the imprint as 1802 locating only the example at the Huntington Library ; Pomeroy J.R. Alexander Anderson 1775-1870 105. See Tanselle 01.01 D. With the engraved coat-of-arms of the First French Empire on the title page and numerous letterpress tables. 16 832 pp. Attractively bound copy of this interesting French almanac for the year 1804-1805 An XIII i.e. year 13 counted from 1792 the period running from 23 September 1804 to 22 September 1805 according to the French Republican calendar which was used from 1793 to 1805. It is the last almanac using the terminology of the French Revolution before Napoleon Bonaparte 1769-1821 was crowned Emperor of the French on 2 December 1804.This almanac contains a wealth of information concerning the organization of the administration of the French state in the first year of the First French Empire. It comprises the names of the main dignitaries in France and abroad mentioning i.a. Thomas Jefferson as President of the United States of America the public officials in Paris and in the provinces the magistracy the clergy the army officers etc. as well as the usual subjects present in most almanacs such as annual fairs stagecoaches and timetables. It is concluded with an extensive index pp. 817-824 and a supplement pp. 825-832 which is not always present in most copies we could trace.The French publisher Laurent Étienne Testu 1765-1839 worked from 1788 for the French printer François Jean Noël Debure 1743-1802 who was the son-in-law of the French printer Laurent Charles dHoury 1723-1786. The family of DHoury had started with the annual publication of the famous Almanach royal which appeared under this title from 1700 to 1792.In 1791 Testu took over Debures printing house and in 1792 the title of the almanac was turned into Almanach national de France due to the new political situation caused by the French Revolution. After Napoleons coronation to emperor in 1804 its title was subsequently changed into Almanach imperial. Testu was appointed imperial publisher to Napoleon until his abdication in 1814.With the 19th-century oval bookplate of the French military Albert Le Lorier "Sous-Intendant Militaire" mounted on the front pastedown. The head of spine is slightly chipped/damaged the corners of the boards are slightly worn. The title page is slightly stained in the outer blank margin two text leaves Oo2 and Zz5 are re-attached probably replaced and their outer blank margins are slightly shortened otherwise a beautiful binding in very good condition.l Grand-Carteret Les almanachs français no. 1433. hardcover

Famous for being the prison of Napoleon Bonaparte in his final years the British island was used as a frequent stop by ships calling in for supplies. The almanac contains 37 pages listing the 930 ships that visited the island between 1 December 1848 and 30 November 1849. The development of steamships as well as the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 would almost completely deprive Saint Helena of its great importance as a supply station. In 1840 a naval station was established for the Royal Navy's campaign to suppress the slave trade. By 1 December 1849 15067 slaves had been brought to the island. Roughly a fourth died on the island with the rest emigrating to Jamaica British Guiana and Trinidad.Starting with the natural history of the island the almanac describes the geology of the island and lists the birds and fish that can be found. The rest of the almanac describes the feasts and festivals for the year 1850; lunar cycles; climate of the island; tides; the family of Queen Victoria; the British cabinet; the political military and ecclesiastical government of the island as well as the British naval command in West Africa; customs and judicial fees and penalties; ordinances; local institutions and societies; and a list of local miscellaneous information. The printer appears to have aimed for a full page; for instance placing a table of the height of several hills and peaks below the regional naval hierarchy instead of near the geographical description whereas a table of geographical distances is placed under the header "local miscellaneous information".With the bookplates of the barrister Alexander Meyrick Broadley 1847-1916 famous for being the defence lawyer for the Egyptian nationalist Ahmed 'Urabi 1841-1911 and of the legendary superspy Sidney George Reilly 1873-1925.
