Each page printed in simple woodcut border with several small head and tailpieces. 40 ll. Only known copy of a beautifully bound French almanach for the year 1763 accompanied by many popular songs. The survival of the present almanach is extremely rare as we have not been able to trace any other copy from the same year and only one set of similar almanachs for the years 1757-1762 at the Bibliothèque nationale de France. The present work is a charming miniature almanac which contains - besides the usual calendar for the year 1763 - several songs mainly love songs but also bacchic songs and "les plaisirs de la critique". The last three pages contain a bookseller's catalogue of other contemporary French almanachs. The title page and the last page show some slight colour offsetting of the pastedowns some occasional minor foxing. Otherwise in very good condition.l This edition not in Grand-Carteret; STCN; WorldCat; cf. WorldCat 470104514 a set of the same almanachs for the years 1757-1762 at the BnF. unknown

1818ABC_50251Paris 1818. 128mo ca. 2.7 x 1.7 cm. chez Louis Janet Original publisher's gold-tooled red morocco with an upside down fleuron in the centre of both boards surrounded by a vegetal border gilt edges. With 8 full-page engravings. 64 pp. Beautiful miniature almanac for the year 1819 published by Janet one of the most well-known producers of miniature books of his time. The work is a so-called "almanach chantant" a miniature almanac of less than 3 centimetres in size with 64 pages and illustrations. Typically intended for women they were usually beautifully bound and contained poetry and love songs. The present example which has curiously been bound upside down contains several illustrated love songs some of which are allegorical and a calendar. The illustrations depict men and women engaged in a variety of different activities dressed in the fashion of the time. Several issues of the almanac were published in the same year with a different number of illustrations and some with the publisher's name on the title page. The boards and spine have been somewhat rubbed. The leaves are lightly browned. Otherwise in good condition.l Grand-Carteret 1869; cf. Nauroy p. 75 other issue; Welsh 5630 other issue. hardcover

180519106Paris: Chez Janet 1805. Contemporary gold-tooled straight-grained red morocco spine decoratively gilt decorative double borders on both boards gilt edges brocade endpapers. 32mo. With 12 full-page engraved plates showing young people talking playing and courting. Exceptionally rare edition of this charming almanac for 1805 and 1806 with a calendar for one and a half year running from September 1805 to December 1806. This was done because the work followed after almanacs that used the French Republican Calendar 1793-1805 which ran from September to September instead of from January to December. Other than the calendar the almanac includes educational songs on friendship silence family and various emotions set to popular tunes and illustrated with 12 engraved plates. Together this was intended as a "School for adolescents" teaching young people about courting and various types of relationships. On the last page the eclipses of the sun and moon for 1806 are listed including those not visible in Europe. The almanac was also published for the years 1807 1808 and 1809 but all editions are very scarce today. We have only been able to find one other copy of the present 1805/1806 edition in sales records but it has not mentioned in any of the literature nor has it been recorded in institutions. With a contemporary annotation in Dutch on the first free flyleaf "Tis niet genoeg te beminen! maar best eerst wel te vezinnen!". The head of the spine has been bumped a round black stain on the back board. The work has been bound into one quire instead of two causing errors in the pagination. Otherwise in good condition.l Cf. As least three issues of Longworth's Belles Lettres Repository were published for 1801-1803 with slightly varying titles: The American ladies & gentlemen's pocket almanac and elegant belles lettres repository. for 1801 Evans 36816; The American ladies' & gentlemen's pocket almanac and belles lettres repository for 1802 Shaw & Shoemaker 50194; and the present titled at the bottom of the front wrapper and as a caption title at the head of p. 5.<br /> <br /> An advertisement on the recto of the final leaf states: "This is the third Belles-Lettres-Repository. The two former have been done at the expense of the Publisher. this he hopes will be at the expense of lovers of neat things." At the bottom of the same page are descriptions of the plates and illustrations including the "frontispiece title-page i.e. front wrapper L'Allegro and finishing piece Il Penseroso form the cover" and the plate on the inside front wrapper being "Orpheus Eurydice and Cerberus." The vignettes by Maverick illustrate "select passages in Hayley's 'Triumphs of temper' with extracts underneath each. At the foot of each of these pages are the kalendar sic pages for 1803 and the intermediate spaces are ruled for belles-lettres selections &c. . these alternate with twelve other vignettes architectural and picturesque with ruled memorandum pages under each the whole engraved."<br /> <br /> Shaw and Shoemaker locate only the example at the Huntington which collates precisely as the present; i.e. wrappers comprised of two engraved plates mounted to each other i.e. the front wrapper being pages 1-4 and the text beginning on page 5 with a caption title at the head. An additional example with the same collation at the Hay Library Brown University confirms the work is complete as issued<br /> <br /> A scarce example in the original slipcase; American publisher's slipcases or sheaths from the 18th century are very rare. Each month is given an engraving several verses and songs with music. Among the latter is found 'Air de la negresse' — a three-verse song with music from or perhaps just inspired by Radet's 1787 opéra-comique La Negresse. Though recorded by both Gay and Carteret we have not located any institutional copy in the usual online catalogues WorldCat KVK CCFr JISC. Carteret 866; Gay I 112.</p><p>32mo 96 × 55 mm pp. 6 61 1 6 including 12 engraved plates by Quéverdo plus integral printed wrapper with engraved title and 'Remarques pour la présente année 1789' at front and imprint and decorative panel border at rear. Engraved throughout including music. Some pages closely cut just affecting ruled borders or touching the musical staves in a very few instances. Gilt edges stitched as issued loose in contemporary/original gilt morocco chemise. Wrappers very slightly rubbed and dusty but an excellent survival.</p> [Jagot for] Boulanger.
