193768952Washington D.C.: United States Government Printing Office 1937. First Edition. Wraps. Good. By examining the experience of the transient program this report has been able to isolate a number of widely-held misconceptions about transients and transient relief. Analysis of the reasons why migrant families left home and of their subsequent travels reveals that they were not - as is so commonly believed - irresponsible and degraded groups addicted to chronic wandering. On the contrary a large majority of them were habitually settled and self-supporting families dislodged by the depression and seeking reestablishment elsewhere. The families left home not only because they were in distress but also because of a reasonable expectation of an improved status at their destination." WPA Research Monograph VII XIII and XVIII. Tall octavo three volumes. Original printed gray paper wrappers. Some general wear and soiling with a previous owner's ink signature on the front panel of each volume. The Viking program consisted of a pair of American space probes sent to Mars Viking 1 and Viking 2. Each spacecraft was composed of two main parts: an orbiter designed to photograph the surface and a lander designed to study the planet from the surface. The orbiters also served as communication relays for the landers. The Viking program grew from NASA's earlier Voyager Mars program. Viking 1 entered Mars orbit on June 19 1976 with Viking 2 following suit on August 7. After orbiting Mars for more than a month and returning images used for landing site selection the orbiters and landers detached; the landers then soft-landed. The Viking 1 lander touched down on the surface of Mars on July 20 1976 and was joined by the Viking 2 lander on September 3. The orbiters continued imaging and performing other scientific operations from orbit while the landers deployed instruments on the surface. Pictures from the Viking 1 and Viking 2 Landers as well as an account of the decade leading up to the Mars pictures by Tim Mutch leader of the Viking Lander Imaging Team. The Viking landers were the first completely successful spacecrafts to land on Mars. Before Viking arrived at Mars landing sites were chosen for both Viking landers. On July 20 1976 Viking lander 1 arrived at its chosen site in the western part of Chryse Planitia. On August 7 1976 Viking lander 2 touched down on Utopia Planitia. Each of the Viking landers carried a series of science packages which included a weather station a seismometer a chemical analysis package two cameras a soil composition package and a biological experiment package. Within minutes of lander 1's touch down the first picture was taken in case something happened to the spacecraft. This picture showed what looked like a sandy dusty surface with rocks up to 10 cm in diameter. The two cameras on each lander were mounted on opposite sides of the space craft. This allowed stereoscopic images to be taken which could be used to calculate distances from the lander to the features in the pictures. From an AI overview: "The Making of an Underachiever: Growing Up in the Shadow of Success 1986 is a book by psychologist Linnus S. Pecaut founder of the Institute for Motivational Development. It details the psychological patterns of children who perform poorly despite having average or above-average intelligence specifically exploring how family dynamics and the pressure of a successful sibling or parent can stunt a child's motivation. Key Concepts from Pecaut's WorkWhy Underachievers UnderachievePecaut emphasizes that underachievement is driven more by behavioral coping mechanisms and personality variables than a lack of academic ability. The Shadow: Growing up next to a highly successful sibling or parent often leads to anxiety and feelings of inadequacy causing the child to subconsciously opt out of the competition. The Short-term Fix: Underachievers develop habits -- such as procrastination making excuses and forgetting assignments -- to reduce immediate stress which ultimately stifles long-term success.Common Characteristics of an UnderachieverAccording to Pecauts findings in publications like the The Washington Post these individuals frequently exhibit several traits:They are highly defensive to criticism and rarely take responsibility for personal failures. They tend to complete assignments incorrectly or fail to turn in work. They are heavily dependent on one-on-one attention and lack self-starter tendencies.Parenting Pitfalls. Pecaut noted that traditional parenting tactics usually make underachievement worse.Using logic e.g. 'If you do this you'll be fine' or power/control e.g. 'If you fail we take away your privileges' only feeds into the child's anxiety.Underachievers are compared to "stuck doors" -- the harder adults pull the more resistance they create.". 1st ed No additional printings listed. From the dust jacket: "This captivating and illuminating book is a memoir of a young black man moving from rural Georgia to life as a student and teacher in the Ivy League as well as a history of the changes in American education that developed in response to the civil rights movement the war in Vietnam and affirmative action. Born in 1950 Horace Porter starts out in rural Georgia in a house that has neither electricity nor running water. In 1968 he leaves his home in Columbus Georgia -- thanks to an academic scholarship to Amherst College -- and lands in an upper-class mainly white world. Focusing on such experiences in his American education Porter's story is both unique and representative of his time. THE MAKING OF A BLACK SCHOLAR is structured around schools. Porter attends Georgia's segregated black schools until he enters the privileged world of Amherst College. He graduates spending one semester at Morehouse College and moves on to graduate study at Yale. He starts his teaching career at Detroit's Wayne State University and spends the 1980s at Dartmouth College and the 1990s at Stanford University. Porter writes about working to establish the first black studies program at Amherst the challenges of graduate study at Yale the infamous DARTMOUTH REVIEW and his meetings with such writers and scholars as Ralph Ellison Tillie Olsen James Baldwin and Henry Louis Gates Jr. He ends by reflecting on an unforeseen move to the University of Iowa which he ties into a return to the values of his childhood on a Georgia farm. In his success and the fulfillment of his academic aspirations Porter represents an era a generation of possibility and achievement.". INSCRIBED / SIGNED by the AUTHOR.
