Tight quite attractive salesman's subscription copy "dummy book" for this laudatory biography caused by the Spanish-American War offering samples from various chapters and on rear pastedown the gilt-lettered spine for a deluxe black calf edition is tipped in. Title page subtitle continues: "The Brilliant Cadet -- the Heroic Lieutenant -- the Capable Captain -- the Conquering Commodore -- the Famous Admiral One of the Stars in the Class at Annapolis Distinguished in Tremendous Battles on the Mississippi and the Atlantic. Hero of Manila Loyal to Duty Faithful to the Flag and True to Friends." Four lined leaves at conclusion have never been filled in -- hence the exceptionally nice condition of this title which is more often found only in worn condition. A far better than average example.
