First edition presentation copy inscribed by the author to the writer of the foreword "Ernest Cockburn with the best wishes thanks and appreciation of the author of this humble work Geoff M. Tait. 2.9.36." The recipient 1889-1945 was a partner in the family firm Cockburn Smithes & Co. one of the world's leading port houses. Above the inscription on the front free endpaper is a second which reads "Dear Ernest Please accept this copy with my love and best wishes Geoff." After Cockburn's death the copy passed to Frederick Armine Cockburn 1902-1981 a chairman of the firm and for the year 1959-60 master of the Worshipful Company of Distillers. His book label is on the front pastedown. Small octavo. Half-tone frontispiece 10 half-tone plates. Original red diaper-grain cloth spine lettered in gilt front cover lettered in gilt within blind panel. Mid-century pencilled annotations and under- and sidelining on first 20 pp. of text. Light wear and marking spine leaning: very good. hardcover
