Extremely rare second English edition of the author's "Les discours militaires" (the second part, with its own title-page but beginning on leaf O1, still in the first edition). "A book frequently quoted from, and, in its time, highly esteemed. It has now become very scarce, and is almost unknown to bibliographers; neither Hazlitt nor Lowndes, Brunet nor Graesse, mentions it. The Second Part, which was intended by Du Praissac to be used as a 'corollary', or epitome of his other tracts, is to be found separately" (Cockle). The first part deals with all subjects, such as levying, marching, building forts, ordnance, fireworks, duties, etc. The second belongs to one of three first edition issues printed by Daniel in Cambridge in 1639, each with varying imprints. - John Cruso (1595-1655) wrote, edited and translated military works before the English Civil War. Born in Norwich, his parents had fled Hondschote in Flanders. He was the captain of the Dutch/Walloon company of the Norwich trained bands. "Cruso's military works were significant in that they were the first to make the new continental, primarily Dutch, military literature available to an English-speaking audience" (ODNB). - Sumptuously bound by Marcellin Lortic (1852-1928) of Paris. The work includes descriptions of the Constantinian Order ("the noblest and oldest", p. 5), the Knights Templar, the Knights of Malta, the Military Order of Christ, and the Order of the Golden Fleece, with the woodcut illustrations showing the various orders' insignia. Dedicated to Giovanni Andrea Angelo Flavio Comneno, Prince of Macedonia, Count of Drivasto, and Grand Master of the Constantinian Knights of St. George. - The treatise is preceded by a handwritten index and followed by a handwritten supplement from the first half of the 18th century describing several additional orders, including the Order of the Starry Cross, the Livonian Order, and the Cavalieri del Giglio. This section is followed by a 19th century seven-page folding list of the main orders of the world, arranged alphabetically by country (from Asia to Württemberg). It is titled "Elenco de' principali Ordini Cavallereschi" and is arranged as a table, giving the respective country and name of the order, the year of its foundation, the name of the founder, as well as brief comments (until 1834). - The loosely enclosed engraving is taken from Johann Hübner's encyclopedia "Neu-vermehrtes und verbessertes Reales Staats-, Zeitungs-, und Conversations-Lexicon" from the mid-18th century: plate III, captioned "Delineation derer in Europa berühmbtesten Ritter-Orden" and showing 70 numbered insignia of the most prominent European knightly orders. - Binding rubbed, spine and lower cover a little chipped. Occasional brownstains to paper; an old shelfmark to pastedown. Count Maximilian was descended from the military writer Jacopo di Porcia. - The engineer Heidemann served under the Elector of Bavaria and is regarded as a "firm adherent of Speckle's. Heidemann's construction was plainly reproduced in Sturm's 'Architectura militaris'" (Jähns). - Occasional browning and minor dampstaining. Individually, the volumes are entitled: vol. I) Essays, moral and political. The fourth edition corrected, with additions; vol. II) Philosophical essays concerning human understanding. First edition of this early, albeit illegal collection of Lenin's works, containing some of the principal writings of Bolshevism. Includes the important preface by Lenin, advocating an organization of professional revolutionaries. - In 1907, the Zerno Book Publishers, directed by M. S. Kedrov, decided to bring out a three-volume collection of Lenin’s works under the general title "Twelve Years". The first volume, which is present here, contains seven important political publications: "The Economic Content of Narodism and the Criticism of it in Mr. Struve's Book", "The Tasks of the Russian Social-Democrats", "The Persecutors of the Zemstvo and the Hannibals of Liberalism", "What is To Be Done?", "One Step Forward, Two Steps Back", "The Zemstvo Campaign and Iskra's Plan", and "Two Tactics of Social-Democracy in the Democratic Revolution". The volume, which came off the press in November 1907 (the cover gives the date 1908), was confiscated soon after its appearance. The second volume was to appear in two parts: "The Agrarian Question: Part One" was published in January 1908 under the pseudonym "VI. Il’in". For the second part, Lenin wrote "The Agrarian Programme of Social-Democracy in the First Russian Revolution, 1905-1907". The galleys and manuscript of this work were confiscated by the tsarist security police, and were destroyed. However, a part of the edition was saved, and the book continued to circulate illegally. - Binding slightly rubbed; interior in excellent condition. OCLC 56677898.

Unhappy about being passed over for a U.S. Supreme Court appointment, he resigned on December 1811. During the War of 1812, he was captain of a rifle corps which became the Delaware 1st Artillery then served at Fort Union in Wilmington, on the Canadian frontier, and assisted in the defense of Baltimore in 1814. He was the nephew of Caesar Rodney who was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. The work is not arranged geographically but divided into six books successively treating (natural) history, politics and warfare, religious ceremonies, arts and sciences, hunting, and funeral traditions. The plates include depictions of a Japanese crucifixion, a lady from Nagasaki, Chinese temples, Brazilian cannibals, Japanese wrestlers and musicians, Indians from Florida, several torture methods, a tower cemetery, etc. - Erasmus Francisci (or Finx) was a prolific polyhistor and is considered one of the most influential figures of the German Baroque period. The present work carries on from his 1668 Ost- und West-Indischer wie auch Sinesischer Lust- und Stats-Garten, which was also arranged by topics rather than regions. - In very good condition. One of the rarest works by Badeau (1730-92), an advocate of physiocracy: a plea for free trade with Asia and Africa, with suggestions for the administration of the Compagnie des Indes. While the book is complete with 40 pages in spite of ending on p. 40 with the catchword 'Chapitre II' (all known copies - BnF, BSB, Univ. de Poitiers, Bibl. Sainte Genevieve, Minist. Affaires étrangères - have 40 pages), a "Chapitre II" was published separately under the title "De la dépense des deniers publics". This extremely rare additional chapter, comprising another 40 pages, is present here, being loosely inserted at the end of the volume. While it for its part bears the catchword "Chap. III" on its final page, no such third chapter is known to have appeared. - An untrimmed copy. Kress 6073 (40 pp.). INED 282 (a similar copy, but bound with the third part of the quoted book). It advocates the immediate convention of the Third Party Congress as the only means to "clarify the situation, settle the disputes, and confine the struggle within proper bounds". The appeal was presented and adopted at the conference of the 22 Bolsheviks held in Switzerland in August 1904 under Lenin's leadership. A total of 19 persons actually attended, and three others subscribed to its decisions. Eventually, the Third Congress of the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party was held from 25 April to 10 May 1905 in London. - A few insignificant marginal flaws. Giovanni D’Andrea (1271-1348), detto anche “Bononiensis” fu considerato anche in vita uno dei maggiori giuristi della sua epoca: le sue “Quaestiones mercuriales” sono una raccolta sistematica di problemi giuridici e dottrina, che l’autore chiamò così perché venivano dibattute di mercoledì nello Studio bolognese. Amico di Petrarca e Cino da Pistoia e sodale di Papa Giovanni XXII, D’Andrea fu anche un personaggio chiave nella storia dell’ateneo bolognese: le sue “quaestiones” furono considerate da subito un’opera fondamentale del diritto canonico. Una sola copia in Iccu. Nice xilography on title, with an abusive Giunti printer’s mark on red; title on red and black, initials. A rare edition of D’Andrea “Mercuriales”, with remarks of Nicholas de Bohier. Giovanni D’Andrea (1271-1348) was one of the major juris of his time: this is a deep collection of juridic questions, early considered a cornerstone of Canon Law. A friend of Petrarca and Cino Da Pistoia, D’Andrea was also a key player of the Bologna university.

Rare first edition, published in Zurich while the Anti-Socialist Laws were in force in Germany and illegally distributed there. Engels's motivation for this work was the 1877 book "Ancient Society" by the American anthropologist Lewis H. Morgan, discussing the origins and development of the family. Marx had investigated the same subject and left notes which Engels combined with copious research of his own, blending it with the principal ideas of historical materialism: "thus, the book becomes a fundamental work on the development of society from the viewpoint of historical materialism" (Laffont). For the first time in Marxism, Engels here studies extensively the development of the family and of marriage, as well as the various positions of women in society. "This is the most instructive application of the materialist conception of history to the early forms of human society" (cf. NDB IV, 525). - Browned as common, but very evenly so. During a serious food crisis in the summer of 1918, involving suppliers hiding grain in an effort to starve out the revolution, Lenin calls for a crusade against grain speculators, wealthy peasants, exploiters and saboteurs. Delivered as a speech to the Central Committee. - Only a handful of copies traceable in libraries worldwide, none outside of the US or the UK. Contemporary vellum with ms. spine title. Edges sprinkled. Early collected edition of Machiavelli's works, including his famous "Principe", the work with which he "founded the science of modern politics" by analysing Cesare Borgia's much-admired "mixture of audacity and prudence, cruelty and fraud, self-reliance and distrust of others" (PMM). This is the so-called "testina" edition, named after the author's woodcut portrait on all the half-titles. It is this very reliable redaction which is used by all quotations of the "Crusca". Five variant editions are known, all bearing the fictitious year of printing "1550" on the title page, through which the (most likely) Swiss publishers intended to circumvent the Papal prohibition. The present variant is usually regarded as the fourth (Bertelli/I.: "Databile al 1635-46"). Contains: 1) "Delle historie fiorentine"; 2) "Il Principe"; 3) "Discorsi"; 4) "Dell'Arte della Guerra"; 5) "L'Asino d'Oro" and other works. - Variously browned throughout due to paper (as common). From the library of Georg Philipp Helberg, secretary to the Electoral church council in Heidelberg and a member of the enlightened secret society "Deutsche Union" (his autograph ink ownership, dated 1787, on the title page). First edition in the original Chinese, first issue with the printing error on pages 82/83 (without erratum slip). The plate of Lin Biao's calligraphy has been torn (likely in 1972, after he fell from grace) and mended; similarly a large tear in the final page has been repaired, with slight loss to the text supplied from another edition. A few edge flaws; old ownership inscription in Chinese. Schiller 1 (without erratum slip).
