He died in prison during the French Revolution despite having renounced Catholicism in 1793 presumably as an attempt to save his life. Texts largely unaffected and legible overall. Good to Very Good condition. 97 loose documents of varying lengths and paper sizes. Most single leaf and written recto only; few multiple pages/leaves. Sizes vary from ~ 2-1/2" x 7-1/2" slips to ~12-1/4" x 8" leaves. <br/><br/>Large lot of signed documents by various Jackson Circuit Court justices of the peace primarily recording the verdicts of court cases nature of the offense and fines assessed and collected or not yet collected. The vast majority of the cases tried are for assault and battery usually receiving a $1 fine if found guilty and "profane swearing" a $5 - $10 fine although "affray" trespass forced imprisonment and "passing spurious money" are also listed. Documents include names of plaintiffs defendants justices occasional other parties sheriffs clerks etc and usually the township in which the case was tried. Justices include William Crenshaw John Goble Charley W. Sitwell James Kelly John Moore William Williams Jonathan Graham Jacob Kester Jacob Brown and many others. Most are from the years 1838 - 1841 ~85%. A nice cache of material documenting this era in Indiana history. unknown books
1837WRCAM45760Probably New York State 1837. 4pp. manuscript on a folded folio sheet. Vertical and horizontal folds. Tanned and stained. Neat splits along the center horizontal folds with no loss of text. Good overall. An original manuscript putting forth the constitution and articles for a local militia unit. The manuscript is written out as a blank form with no particular militia company state or locality identified. Presumably this text was copied and circulated as a guide to all those interested in forming a militia. One part of the text refers to an "Act of Assembly approved April 4 1837." The State of New York passed a revisal of the state militia law on that date making it the most likely location. <br> <br> A calligraphic hand has written at the top of the first page "Constitution of the" with a blank space underneath. The preamble then reads: "The subscribers hereunto are hereby united in the formation of a volunteer company of Infantry or Riflemen as may be determined hereafter by a vote of two thirds of the members. The company shall be governed by constitutional law and the following articles of association." The manuscript text then goes on to list twenty- six articles that would govern the company including a description of their dress and "undress" uniforms rules for appointing "non- commissioned" officers and majority rule of the "regular parading members" in decision- making. There would be a treasurer and a secretary regular fees fines as appropriate and new members would have to be proposed by a current member and then would be voted upon by the whole company. Provision is also made for the future maintenance of an armory building. <br> <br> Interesting evidence of military organization at the local level in 19th- century America. unknown books

This edition is also noteworthy for the inclusion of Coke's complete prefaces. Sir Edward Coke 1552-1643 was considered to be the greatest legal practitioner of his day. Written between 1572 and 1616 The Reports are not reports in the conventional sense but highly detailed anthologies of precedents organized according to the cases they consider. In each instance Coke assembled a large body of cases outlined their arguments and explained the reasons for the judgment using it as a basis for a statement of general principles. They are in effect a series of treatises on the points of law adjudged and not merely notes for citation. Taken together The Reports form the most extensive and detailed treatment of Common Law pleading that had yet appeared. A work of immense authority it was often cited as The Reports there being no need to mention the author's name. His accounts especially of pleadings were applauded for both their clarity and usefulness as stylistic models for students.
