Softcovers printed light blue paper wraps bound with a dark blue plastic spine. 24 mechanically reproduced pages printed on one side of each sheet. Fine.</p><p>Included with the brief are copies of arguments presented to the House of Representatives favoring an impeachment inquiry: 1 "Why the Calhoun Precedent Governs and the Colfax Precedent does not". 2 mechanically reproduced folio pages. and 2 "General Arguments as to Why House of Representatives Should Not Defer to Grand Jury Proceedings". 2 mechanically reproduced folio pages. Each are printed on 13 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide sheets stapled at top left. There is minor faint creasing to the top edges as the pages of the "arguments" overlap the brief.</p><p>RARE.</p><p>Unbeknownst to the public and most of the Nixon administration a grand jury had been impaneled on December 5 1972 and a federal investigation into political corruption in Maryland was underway. The investigation focused on Spiro Agnew's activities as Baltimore County Executive and as Governor of Maryland. It was found that Agnew had accepted bribes and kickbacks from contractors in exchange for public service contracts. In September of 1973 Agnew engaged the K Street law firm of Paul Weiss Rifkind Wharton & Garrison. Martin London became his lead attorney. London together with Jay H. Topkis and Max Gitter drafted a "Memorandum In Support of Motion" addressing the question as to whether it would be constitutional to indict or criminally try a sitting Vice President. The memorandum puts forth historical arguments as to why "the constitution bars a criminal proceeding against the Vice President of the United States". In the meantime following a precedent set in 1826 by Vice President John C. Calhoun Agnew asked the House of Representatives to initiate an impeachment investigation into bribery charges. The hope was that his name would be cleared by such an investigation. However Speaker Carl Albert after consulting the parliamentarian and other members denied Agnew's request on September 26 1973 stating that the request "relates to matters before the courts. In view of that fact I as Speaker will not take any action.at this time". On October 5 1973 Solicitor General Robert Bork responded negatively to Agnew's request to enjoin the grand jury proceedings investigating him. He provided the United States District Court for the District of Maryland with a brief stating that "considerations based upon the Constitution's text history and rationale which indicate that all civil officers of the United States other than the President are amenable to the federal criminal process either before or after the conclusion of impeachment proceedings." Spiro Agnew resigned from his office on October 10 1973 pleading no contest to a single charge of tax evasion.</p> Washington, DC, September 28, 1973. paperback

A photographic yearbook from the Albany Law School class of 1860 assembled by student Horatio Colony 1835-1917.<br /> Opened in 1851 Albany Law School is the oldest independent law school in the United States. Many of its students in the 1850s and '60s became prominent lawyers and judges.<br /> As is the custom with the professionally produced college photograph yearbooks produced by George Kendall Warren starting in the late 1850s each photograph is inscribed beneath by the sitter with his name and hometown. The album opens with professors Ira Harris Amasa Parker Amos Dean Nathaniel Harris and Levi Chamberlain. Some notable students include Alexander P. Ketchum who became a Colonel and Chief Appraiser of the Port of New York; Clayton H. Delano 1836-1920 who served eight terms as the Town of Ticonderoga's Supervisor and was elected twice to the New York State Assembly; and William S. Opdyke general counsel of the Delaware and Hudson Company. <br /> Horatio Colony 1835-1917 whose picture appears last and is unfortunately obscured by damage assembled this album. The photograph of Levi Chamberlain is inscribed to "Horatio friend and pupil." He was admitted to the bar in New Hampshire and New York in 1860; in 1869 he along with his brother George took over the management of the family business the Faulkner and Colony Woolen Mill. He held several other civic and local government positions before his death in an automobile accident in 1917. His son Horatio Jr. 1900-1977 a poet and novelist established the Colony family home as a museum upon his death.<br /> <br /> With: Autograph album containing autographs of acquaintances and some notable figures including Amos Bronson Alcott "A. Bronson Alcott" and Octavius Frothingham "O.B. Frothingham". In near matching black morocco autograph album stamped in blind and gilt extremities rubbed. With later inscription of C.W. Collection of 32 twice-daily - later weekly - press releases on letterhead of the International Longshoremen's & Warehousemen's Union. Each 1-6pp; multi-page documents corner-stapled; most 11" x 8-1/2" a few on legal-sized sheets 14" x 8-1/2. Occasional mild soil or creasing but overall Very Good comprising a complete or nearly so transcript of the proceedings from Dec. 19 1949 to April 4 1950 date of conviction then resuming for the bail trial August 3-5 1950. Together with an undated cover letter transmitting one of the releases signed by William E. Dodd Editorial Assistant of The Dispatcher the official ILWU newspaper.<br /> <br /> Bridges 1901-1990 was an Australian-born longshoreman who arrived in the U.S. in 1920 soon joining the I.W.W. and eventually founding in 1937 the ILWU a radical offshoot of the International Longshoremen's Association. He had by that time established his reputation as a fiery labor leader with strong Marxist leanings particularly in his role as leader of the bloody West Coast Waterfront Strike of 1934 - a role which earned him the enmity of both of more conservative labor figures and of the U.S. government which made numerous attempts to deport Bridges beginning in 1939. All these attempts were unsuccessful and Bridges finally gained full U.S. citizenship in 1945. His 1949 trial - the government's final attempt to have Bridges removed from the country - hinged on the assertion that Bridges had perjured himself in his application for citizenship having claimed falsely according to the indictment to have never been a member of the Communist Party. The jury returned a guilty verdict but the conviction was later overturned by the Supreme Court in 1953 finally marking the end of Bridges' 15-year fight to remain in his adopted country. <br /> <br /> The current run of press releases issued by the ILWU Legal department appeared as often as twice-daily during the early portion of the trial. They provide a continuous daily transcript of testimony and events through mid-January 1950 after which the format changes to a "Weekly Roundup of Events." Bridges' and his co-conspirators' convictions are announced in a full two-page press release on April 4th 1950 with a lengthy statement by the officers of the Union after which there is a gap of several months until bail proceedings begin in August 1950. <br /> <br /> Together these documents offer a very useful primary source for study of Government suppression of left-wing labor unions during the Cold War era and a granular view of the legal proceedings in a significant U.S. labor trial. Apparently scarce with only a single U.S. institution Stanford holding even a single separately-catalogued example. International Longshoremen's & Warehousemen's Union unknown

This volume contains laws on the judicial and financial operation of the state regulations regarding the church and indigenous populations and many other subjects during a formative period of Mexican independence. Scarce printing of an early independent Mexican judicial opinion that the rights of inheritance and succession do not apply to aliens and foreign residents particularly those of an enemy country. The judgment was principally intended to drive out Spanish citizens who still held monetary claims and land grants in Mexico but also would have been threatening to many Texas colonists. While those who purchased land through the official colonization schemes automatically became Mexican citizens the claims of the numerous immigrants who did not were put at greater risk by this finding. Light dust soiling and toning internally. A scarce pamphlet on potential changes to the laws governing the treasury department in the Mexican state of Jalisco. The first section of the text comprises an address to the state congress setting forth the reasons for making additions to the law and fifteen preliminary propositions for the changes. The second portion prints the text of the additional law in its forty-six articles. Of surmounting interest are three well-printed folding charts at the rear which provide statistics on the state of the treasury the general budget of the state for 1828 and additional tax-related figures. Light old folds a few minor spots Near Fine. <br /> <br /> Burnet County in central Texas was created as a separate entity in 1852. The Committee appointed by Hon. Edward H. Vontress Judge of the 17th Judicial District included John Henry Brown Alexander Stuart Walker Thomas Proctor Hughes William C. Wiseman prominent and powerful Texans all. <br /> Brown 1820-1895 was evidently not a lawyer; a newspaper editor politician and historian he was among the earliest writers of Texas histories. Brown would chair the committee that prepared Texas's articles of secession; during the Civil War he was on Ben McCulloch's staff and fought at Palmito Ranch the last battle of the War. After the War along with other disaffected Texans he moved to Mexico for several years. <br /> Hughes 1826-1899 was born in Kentucky and settled in Texas around 1850. A member of the Texas Secession Convention he voted against secession but then joined the Confederate Army. Walker studied law with David Burnet after whom the County is named; and served in the Confederate Army and as a Confederate judge. Wiseman was Texas Reconstruction Governor A.J. Hamilton's appointee as Chief Justice of Guadalupe County.<br /> Edward H. Vontress 1825-1864 was an attorney judge state representative for Texas and Confederate officer. Born in Kentucky he moved to Texas and opened a law firm with Thomas P. Hughes. He represented Williamson and Burnet Counties in the Fifth Texas Legislature from 1853-54. When the Seventeenth Judicial District was created in 1856 he was elected its first district judge. He fought under Gen. Albert Sydney Johnston; returned to Texas and was elected Captain of Co. A Morgan's Regiment 18th Texas Cavalry; and was killed in June 1864 while on his way to deliver a message to Gen. Richard Taylor. Online Handbook of Texas.<br /> Alexander Stuart Walker 1826-1896 was born in Virginia and settled in Texas in 1852. A lawyer he was elected district judge while serving in the Confederate Army in 1862 . He was removed as judge by the U.S. military in 1865 for being an "impediment to Reconstruction. unknown
