Hand. Insgesamt sauber und wohlerhalten.

Thomas Paine's socio-political pamphlet "Agrarian Justice", published in 1797, in its first German translation. Discussing land ownership and estate taxation, this pioneering work proposes a detailed plan to tax land owners to pay for the needs of those who have no land. The work is based on the contention that "the earth, in its natural uncultivated state was the common property of the human race" (p. 16). - Bound with four rare works, two of which were prepared by members of the immediate circle of the popular German poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff (1897-1848): - (II) A brief history of the Roxel parish in Münster, prepared by C. A. (1+½+1 =) 2½ SS. auf Doppelblättern. Folio.
5 volumes. Large 4to (200 x 290 mm). 4760 pp. & preliminary and final pages. Publisher's original printed wrappers. Rare, complete set with the usually lacking fifth volume. A vast collection of documents on 19th century French railways by the brothers Émile (1800-75) and Isaac Pereire (1806-80), prominent French entrepreneurs inspired by Saint-Simonian ideas. Their "complete works" were planned to run to 28 volumes, of which twelve would be dedicated to the development of French railways. Only four of these volumes actually appeared: the fifth volume here present was never brought into the trade; while some copies of the text were printed, folded and stitched, they were never equipped with preliminaries or wrappers. This final volume includes documents for the years 1851 and 1852. - The Péreire brothers were prominent Parisian financiers of Sephardi descent, rivals of the Rothschilds. As early as 1835 they founded, with Rothschild, the "Compagnie du Chemin de fer de Paris à Saint-Germain". Later they founded the Crédit Mobilier bank which specialized in mining exploration and funded the booming railway construction of the mid-19th century. - Sewing of Volume 1 somewhat loosened; wrappers chipped. Mostly uncut and untrimmed as issued. From the library of David Saul Landes (1924-2013), professor of economics and of history at Harvard University, with his ink ownership to the upper wrapper cover of the first volume. Walch 419. OCLC 24938043.
4to. XII (2), 762, (12) pp. With a fine folding engraving lacking in most copies. Contemporary full calf with giltstamped label to richly gilt spine. Edges sprinkled red. First edition thus. As the title reveals, the book is based on the famous handbook for merchants published by Jacques Le Moine de l'Espine (d. 1696), a French protestant refugee who established himself in Amsterdam around 1679 as a merchant and print dealer. His book became the most widely used work of its kind in Amsterdam during the 18th century. The first edition appeared in 1694, and a great number of ever-expanding editions followed, edited by Isaac le Long after the death of the original author and from 1727 onwards augmented by a second volume. The final edition, which ran to four volumes, appeared in 1801/02. Simultaneously with the first Dutch edition, Le Moine published a French edition, a volume of a mere 206 pages. A second French edition of 388 pages was published in 1710: while the name of Le Moine de l'Espine appeared on the title, it was edited by an anonymous author with the help of Jacques Mondoteguy. The present volume only states that it is "based upon the work of Le Moine". Indeed, it is a much revised and largely expanded edition and more systematically arranged. Ricard established himself in Amsterdam as a merchant in 1705, and though little is known about his life, his work demonstrates that he was experienced in various branches of commerce. The engraving, which appears to be lacking from all other copies, shows the Amsterdam City Hall, indicating "No 1 - place where the bank is situated" and "No 2 - place where the money of the bank is traded from 10 to 12 o'clock in the morning". - Bookplate removed from front pastedown, otherwise fine. Kress 3493.
8vo. 3 parts in 1 volume. (30), 192 pp. With woodcut title-vignette, 2 folding woodcut plates (the second one incomplete), as well as numerous woodcut illustrations in the text. Contemporary full vellum. First edition. - Rare treatise on artillery by the mathematician Rivault (1571-1616), a scholar of classical and oriental languages and tutor to the young king Louis XIII. Includes the first written account of the capacity of water to explode a bombshell when heated - a discovery that is regarded as one of the steps leading to the invention of the steam engine. Dedicated to the Huguenot Maximilien de Bethune, later the Duke of Sully. The illustrations mostly depict ballistics, sometimes showing cannons as well. Copies containing 3 or 4 plates result from cutting the second plate in two or three pieces. In this copy, the second plate was cut as well, but merely the middle part is present in the volume. An expanded edition with new material on guns and gunpowder, but without separate plates, was published in 1608. - Binding soiled, foot of lower joint starting. Provenance: from the collection of Thomas Fremantle, 3rd Baron Cottesloe (1862-1956), commander of the Territorial Army and president of the Society for Army History Research, with his bookplate to front pastedown. Rare; a single copy in the United States (New York Public Library). Cockle 676. Brunet IV, 1319. Graesse VI, 133 (note). Jähns 626 ("Robert de Flurance"). Cf. Spaulding/Karpinski 81 (2nd edition).
3 Bde. XLVII, 336 SS. (4), 474 SS. (4), 432, (40) SS. G. Groß, in: Trierer Biogr. Lex., hg. v.

Principal work of the well-known Frankfurt jurist in a splendid contemporary binding. Heinrich Christian Senckenberg (1704-68) was the brother of the renowned physician and naturalist Johann Christian Senckenberg. The "famous son of the city of Frankfurt am Main" studied at Gießen, and then at Halle with Christian Thomasius before taking his degree at Leipzig. Even while a student Senckenberg contributed to Mencke's "Acta Eruditorum". He taught at the universities of Gießen, Frankfurt am Main, and Göttingen. He was created Reichshofrat by Emperor Francis I in 1745, on the occasion of the coronation - a distinction never before awarded to a Frankfurt citizen in this fashion, as his was not a title in name only, but included a seat and a vote, as well as a salary. - Very slight, nearly imperceptible worming to covers; upper joint starting. Remains of a bookplate on the pastedown have been overpasted; a smudged old ownership stamp to title page. A splendid copy from the estate of the Frankfurt lawyer Wilhelm A. Schaaf (1929-2015). 356 x 279 mm. Rare shot from the camera of Perfecto Romero, the photographer of the Cuban Revolution, who signed and dated "1959" on the verso. The subject of the photograph is Camilo Cienfuegos (1932-1959), hero of the revolution who was presumed dead only months later when his small plane mysteriously disappeared on a night flight. The verso also has a note from the Museo de la Revolucion, which thanks Rosa Maria Medel, the daughter of the Cuban-American singer Rosita Fornés, for this image: "A usted, por sos valores profesionales, patrioticos, eticos y por su firmeza como digna representante de un pueblo que jamàs ha claudicado / Museo de la Revolución / Octobre - 31 - 1998". - Slightly creased and with a few edge flaws; one larger tear on the left edge rebacked.
Batterby, "On the Town in New York", S. 228). Diese "andere Verpflichtung", die Lindbergh kurioserweise dem Festmahl Orteigs vorzog, war das von der "Aeronautical Chamber of Commerce of America" veranstaltete "Banquet in Honor of Charles Lindbergh", welches diesen Abend im Waldorf-Astoria Hotel stattfand und von dem die hier vorliegenden Erinnerungsstücke stammen. Die Messing-Gedenkplakette zeigt ein Relief der "Spirit of St. Louis" und Legende "Per Aspera Ad Astra", revers die Legende: "Commemorating First Nonstop New York To Paris Flight By Capt. Charles A. Lindbergh May 20-21, 1927. Aeronautical Chamber of Commerce of America" (in maßgefertigter Samt-Präsentationsunterlage).

Folio (210 x 317 mm). (10), 76, (8) pp. Printed title within engraved historiated border, 10 double-page engraved plates and 2 folding plates. Contemporary vellum, lacking ties. Third French edition, first published in Italian 1612. - Basta enjoyed major success as commander of the cavalry under Alessandro Farnese, Duke of Parma; after the Duke's death he entered the service of Rudolf II. This was his most important treatise, in which he described how to free the cavalry from its historically close operational ties with the infantry so that it might be able to act as "la pupilla degli eserciti". - Provenance: bote of purchase by Hugo Montgomery in 1617 to title-page. Bookplate of Sir John Cope, Baronet, to front pastedown. Later in the collection of Thomas Fremantle, 3rd Baron Cottesloe (1862-1956), commander of the Territorial Army and president of the Society for Army History Research. A good copy.
8vo. XVI, 248 pp. Publisher's original giltstamped red cloth with original dust jacket (spine a little stained, rear cover a littel sunnned with a short tear tp the upper edge). First edition of this classic study of the totalitarian state. - After years of professional and underground resistance to Hitler's regime, the German lawyer Ernst Fraenkel (1898-1975) escaped Nazi Germany to the UK in 1938, subsequently emigrating to America in 1939, where he studied American law at the University of Chicago. During this period he revised and completed his manuscript of the present work that he had brought with him from Germany, discussing the political structure of the Nazi regime. It was translated by the young Edward Albert Shils, later a highly distinguished professor of sociology at the University of Chicago. Following the book's publication, Fraenkel became one of the founding fathers of German political science. - In excellent state of preservation. From the library of the Prague-born law historian Guido Kisch (1889-1985 in Basel), an outstanding scholar in mediaeval Jewish history at the Hebrew Union College and in Basel, with a 1980s provenance slip inserted.
