Hayn/G. II, 704). - Fine roll-tooled binding shows the arms of the Roman Empire, Austria, Lower and Upper Austria (Haebler I, 329, 5) and platestamps of Justitia and Fortuna (I, 89, II & III). Haebler ascribes the tools to the Nuremberg bookbinder Hans Pfister (d. 1600) or the Wittenberg master Hans Dietz (d. 1582): thus, the present volume serves as a fine example for the continuing use of Renaissance stamps for many decades of the 17th century. - Browned and stained throughout; several thumb indices (the last one torn out). First edition of the earliest English socialist journal in book form. Edited by the political activist and chartist leader G. J. Harney (1817-97), seeking "to present his own manifesto for radical political change" (Carter). In circulation for a mere 16 months, from June 1849 to September 1850, the magazine occupied a large group of unpaid writers on European affairs and the Italian question in particular, including Alexandre Ledru-Rollin, Giuseppe Mazzini, Friedrich Engels and Louis Blanc. The "Review" criticized domestic parliamentary decisions which impacted negatively on working-class interests, and repeatedly invoked the evils of the monarchical system. - Occasionally somewhat browned and brownstained. Hinges professionally repaired. Volume two lacking the separate title-page and preliminaries, as well as the issues of August and September 1850; pencil note about the incomplete volume 2 to first page. - Provenance: contemporary pencil ownership of Adam Smack, 13 Cornwall Street, to flyleaf. The final volume of the second edition of the "Observations-Puncte", Khevenhüller's grand three-part collection of army service directions, hailed as the first drill-book in military history. This section on the cavalry first appeared separately in 1726, then again in 1734; it is here added to the "Observations-Puncte" for the first time. "The most interesting study of the cavalry produced in the age of Charles VI" (Jähns II, 1688). Khevenhüller's (1683-1744) military books long formed "the basis for all organizational and tactical institutions in the Imperial army (Khevenhüller was an Austrian field marshal) and also provide a vivid and accurate portrait of the military affairs of his time" (ADB). - Boards rubbed. Uncut and untrimmed copy, with the sometimes-lacking final leaf of publisher's ads and instructions for the bookbinder. Very rare. A heated debate about the function of trade unions developed, with numerous camps pitted against each other both at congresses and in newspaper editorials. Most notably, the group around Trotsky held the view that trade unions should be run by ideological leaders, whereas Lenin's position eventually shifted to a more independent role for trade unions. - Two small tears to spine; a good copy.

Il est également connu pour son achat de la bibliothèque du collège de Clermont à Paris, à la suite de l’expulsion des Jésuites, ayant nécessité un accord avec le Roi de France aux fins d’obtenir la possibilité de transporter les manuscrits, dont de nombreux incunables, jusqu’à Rotterdam. Antérieurement à cette affaire de 1764, « instruit que plusieurs pays, en particulier la France et l’Espagne, [avaient] produits plusieurs jurisconsultes dont les ouvrages [étaient] ignorés ou non imprimés, ou perdus, [Gérard Meerman avait] résolu de les rechercher et de les publier. Dans cette vue, il entra en correspondance avec une multitude de savans, et il entreprit divers voyages depuis 1744 jusqu’en 1747. » À son retour, « il fit imprimer en 1750 à la Haye, in-8° le Conspectus de son grand trésor de droit civil et canonique, qui [devait] renfermer, en cinq volumes in-folio, les ouvrages rares, principalement de l’Espagne et de la France. The first part collects the principal treatises on the subject: Tilemann Friese's "Müntzspiegel" (1592), with a folding table showing the increase and decrease of the value of several species of coin from 1582 to 1690; Cyriacus Spangenberg's "Nützlicher Tractat vom rechten Brauch und Missbrauch der Müntzen" (1592), Johann Georg Krull's "Tractatus politico-nomicus de regali monetarum jure" (1667), Tobias Oelhafen von Schollenbach's "De rei monetariae statu hodierno" (1665), the anonymous "Mysterium mysteriorum mundanorum, das ist: ein Welt- oder Gelt-Geheimnuß" (1620), Nicolas Oresme's seminal "Tractatus de origine & jure nec non & de mutationibus monetarum" (1605), Gabriel Biel's "De monetis" (1605), and Johannes Aquila's "Libellus egregius de potestate & utilitate monetarum" (1516). Extremely rare publication on the oppression of the Armenian people by the Ottoman Empire, preceding the terrible genocide by only a couple of years. This is a German translation of the equally rare French work "L'Arménie persécutée", published in Lausanne. Not a single copy s traceable in libraries internationally; only one single copy of the French version is known in libraries (Lausanne). - Among the impressive illustrations are reproductions of two paintings by the British artist Charles Joseph Staniland relating to the massacre of Constantinople on 30 September 1895, as well as depictions of Armenian costumes, a group of orphans, farmers, Ottoman troops, and the torture of an Armenian prisoner. - Co-edited by the German "Hilfsbund für Armenien", a charity organisation active only from 1896 to 1900. German society, which at this point was still very much stuck in colonialist thinking, was not ready to face the misery of the Armenian people, given that their oppressor, the Ottoman Empire, was an ally to Germany. The international lack of interest in the tragic situation of the Armenians ended up enabling one of the worst genocides of the 20th century that was implemented primarily through the mass murder of around one million Armenians during death marches to the Syrian Desert. - Evenly browned throughout; somewhat foxed. With several small marginal tears and flaws; a portion of pp. 13f. clipped (ca. 65 x 130 mm, presumably with loss of image, but no loss to text).

Reissue, with new title only, of the only bilingual Italian and Dutch edition, which had been published in 1704 by J. du Vivie and J. Severinus of Leiden. An important legal sourcebook, the "Consolato" contains the most complete systematic survey of medieval maritime customs. The first dated edition appeared at Barcelona in 1494; later Italian editions incorporated maritime laws of Italian cities, and the "Consolato" came into force throughout the whole Mediterranean, and as supplementary law for Northern European countries. It exercised influence on maritime legislation in various West European countries, including the French "Ordonnances de la marine" and the "Code de commerce". - Italian and Dutch versions are printed on opposite pages. Translated into Dutch by Abraham Westerveen; the Italian version appears to date from the 15th century. The appendix ("Ordinacions de tot vexell qui armara per anar en cors e de tota armada ques faca per mar") is in the original Catalan. - Slight browning, but a good copy. Kress 2415. Goldsmiths' 4054.

English translation of Lenin's article ("Uroki revoliutsii"), written in late July 1917 and first published in mid-September with an added postscript reflecting on the events of August 1917. During a period when the future form of governance was still undecided, Lenin's pamphlet promotes the idea of the "Soviet" (workers' council) rather than parliamentary democracy. Importantly, the appendix presents one of the first English overviews of the new political reality, defining and discussing such terms as the "Essers," "Mensheviks," "Fist (Kulak)," and "Soviet." The booklet was first published in 1917 by the same publisher (34 pp.); the second edition is presumably updated to reflect political developments in the interim. The pamphlet was also reprinted in San Francisco in 1919 by the People's Institute. This 1918 edition is quite scarce, with KVK and OCLC showing copies at the Danish National Library, Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, Harvard (Houghton Library), and Zurich. - A very good copy of a fragile title. All edges red. Fifth and best edition of one of the most widely used German handbooks for merchants, first published in 1719 with a second volume in 1726/27. The first volume and the first part of the second volume treat the commercial practices of the cities of Germany, Poland, Russia, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, the Dutch Republic, Great Britain, the Austrian Netherlands (Belgium), Switzerland, Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, and the United States. The second part of the second volume deals with business correspondence, business travelling, book-keeping, and letters of exchange. The third volume, published separately, is an alphabetically arranged dictionary of commodities. - Usual mild browning but a fine set. Kress B.1540.

Outre les passages fondamentaux sur les pouvoirs du Roi de France, les fondements du droit civil coutumier, il y a naturellement dans ce recueil une multitude de choses curieuses (spécialement en matière pénale) ; on ne peut s’empêcher d’en citer quelques unes - sur les personnes « refroidy de nature », les juges et avocats corrompus (p. 293) et pour terminer, (p. 1493) « destre sodomites item qui est prouvé sodomite doit perdre les coüilles pour la première fois & pour la seconde fois doit perdre le membre, & pour la tierce fois doit estre ars ». Il est à noter que Charondas, annotant cette partie de la somme rural souligne que pour lui il doit être puni de mort dès la première fois. Frappante manière de montrer le plus grand libéralisme des mœurs médiévales qu’à l’époque classique. Texte d’une grande rareté.

Exceedingly rare second Spanish edition of the military treatise "I Carichi Militari" by the Neapolitan commander of the Habsburg armies in Italy, the Low Countries and Catalonia and aide-de-camp to Albert, Archduke of Austria, Brancaccio, which was first published in Antwerp in 1610. The first Spanish edition appeared in 1639, while a third one was published in 1710. Includes the duties and functions of the soldiers and generals of the infantry, cavalry, and artillery, as well as the sovereign's responsibility to ensure order within the military. - Contemporary handwritten ownership to title-page deleted. Last in the collection of Thomas Fremantle, 3rd Baron Cottesloe (1862-1956), commander of the Territorial Army and president of the Society for Army History Research. The invoice he received from Grafton & Co is loosely inserted. - Binding somewhat waterstained, hinges cracked. A few minor edge flaws, tiny holes to the right margin of the first 150 pages, not touching text; a few marks in pencil.
