This set of hearing transcripts and the texts of supporting documents chronicles the history of Franklin D. Roosevelt's court-packing plan and its defeat in the United States Senate. Angered by the Court's hostility to legislation relating to the New Deal Roosevelt proposed a bill to expand the membership of the court on February 5 1937. Presented as a way to increase efficiency it was intended to create seats for justices who would support the New Deal. The resulting struggle was a critical episode in Roosevelt's presidency and one of the nastiest clashes between the executive and judiciary in American history. Roosevelt's plan failed but the debate had a profound effect on the Court's attitude toward the New Deal which lead many to believe that the president was ultimately successful. unknown

D.C. Rench was DeWitt Clinton Rench 1838-1861 from Washington Co. Md. who practiced law in Baltimore. After returning home in 1861 prior to enlisting with the Confederacy he went to Williamsport Md. on business for his father; there he was attacked by a mob and murdered in the street because of his support of the South. Frontispiece illustration signed and dated in pencil by the artist complete with tissue guard. A near fine copy the binding square and tight the boards were slightly dust marked. The contents are clean throughout and without previous owner's inscriptions or stamps. Signed by General B. L. Montgomery in black ink to the limitation page. This special edition was limited to 110 copies of which 100 were for sale. This example is numbered 76. A collection of 27 Poems written by serving soldiers and considered to be the best entries received in a poetry competition organised by Eighth Army's Education Officer.
