Inscribed on front wrapper "Compl. of plaintiff." <br /> <br /> President Lincoln signed into law a temporary income tax to help finance the Civil War. William Springer an Illinois lawyer refused to pay on earnings from his law practice. Eventually his real property was seized and sold to the government to satisfy the arrearage. Springer and his law firm argued that the War income tax was an impermissible direct tax on his estate by the federal government not apportioned among the states in violation of the Constitution. The case would eventually go to the Supreme Court in 1881.<br /> <br /> Two of the members of the firm McClernand Broadwell & Springer were well known to Lincoln: Norman M. Broadwell studied law in the office of Lincoln and Herndon in Springfield Illinois and John McClernand was a disastrous Civil War General once relieved his his command then restored by Lincoln. <br /> <br /> John E. Rosette for the government had "at the invitation of Abraham Lincoln. moved to Springfield Illinois where he practiced law for about thirty years. Rosette came to Sangamon County as a Democrat in politics but from 1856 on he identified himself with the Republican party. Light chipping at edges; moderate dust soiling and toning. Two separate manuscript legal documents pertaining to Geronimo Lomeli. In the first dated October 24 1889 Lomeli takes ownership of a parcel of land in the community called Magallanes in the municipality of Pénjamo. It is sold to him by Mariana Galván and includes a hand-drawn map of the parcel.<br /> <br /> In the second document dated March 9 1901 Lomeli has hired a lawyer and notary to write up a complaint against 37-year-old Tiburcio Paterño who has failed to pay for the right to have an “open house†for commercial purposes on Lomeli’s property. This document ends with an itemized bill to Lomeli for the lawyer and notary’s services. A transcription of this document is available. unknown

Rear cover is securely attached to text but taped. Leather boards and spine are worn pitted cracked rubbed and chipped. Right front flyleaf missing the lower third section. Toning to the contents. Previous owner name label Daniel Middagh located on the front paste down. Daniel Middagh's name written in old ink repeatedly on the the front end sheets. A couple of 1813 inscriptions written by Middagh are located on the right front flyleaf and the following front blank end sheet. On the rear end sheet is another inscription: "December 15 1823 Court Day Mary Simmons Mecklinburg County Virginia". Old ink doodles and some arithmetic notes also written on the rear end papers. This book has a 19 page list of subscribers with their home towns preceding the title page. The list includes "Tho: Jefferson Monticello"; "James Madison jun. Orange 2."; "John Marshall Richmond City"; "Jos. Jones Monroe Albermarle" James Madison's Uncle and dozens of other prominent people. <br /> <br /> Evans 35611. Printed by T. Nicolson unknown
