There are some surprises: Graham successfully defends pro bono a Negro girl against charges that she murdered her mistress. On the other hand in his successful defense of a man accused of beating his wife here is the rhetoric of the day: "I myself have always been of the opinion that people of sensibility would endeavour to draw a veil over unfortunate family transactions so as to hide them from the fact of the world. This was the sentiment of the prisoner otherwise he would have exposed her baseness long since . I shall prove to you that the prosecutrix is the most fiery masculine and blood-thirsty of any woman this court or jury ever saw: in short she is a disgrace to her sex . 17956277New York 1795. Single leaf notarized document 32.5 x 20.5 cm. printed and manuscript text on recto only. With embossed paper seal of the notary. Sworn testimony of a Peter Adams regarding an agreement to settle a dispute over transport of one hundred barrels of fish. The fish located in New Carlisle Quebec north of New Brunswick to New York. The parties Thomas Sherrer who had attempted to ship the barrels and John Claswell captain of the vessel that was to transport the barrels appear to have reached an agreement which is recorded here and notarized. The document is signed by Peter Adams and then notarized by John Roorbach Justice for the City and County of New York. Wear along fold creases and some light water staining at same; some edge wear to leaf. A bit of minor paper loss at the seal and at the center of the folds. Good. unknown

18292505Arequipa 1829. 4pp. on a bifolium. Removed from a bound volume. A few small areas of worming slightly affecting text. Light toning and scattered faint foxing. An unrecorded and indignant diatribe concerning a mud-slinging match in the Peruvian town of Arequipa in the late 1820s which begins "Bien ruidosa ha sido la causa de los libelos famosos que corrieron ahora pocos meses en esta capital contra personas las mas notables de ella." The rest of the bifolium gives an account of the convoluted events that apparently involve several episodes of clear libel by several individuals for which their victims are having difficulty in obtaining legal remedy with the result that scandalous lies are now being spread with impunity. The author concludes by pleading for more swift reliable justice and equality before the law from authorities in Arequipa:<br /> <br /> "Si os mostrais débiles y preferis la inaccion sereis indignos de los destinos que ocupais. Patriotas y no patriotas todos son iguales ante la ley y no debeis permitir nunca que triunfe la impunidad: gloriaos en fin de padecer por la justicia pues asi dais el debido lleno à vuestros cargos."<br /> <br /> Surviving printing from Arequipa during this period is very scarce. unknown

An online search shows that it is often cited today. Benjamin Vaughan Abbott 1830-1890 was the secretary of the New York Code Commission and the principal author of the state's penal code which was completed in 1864.
