John Worrall believed to be the first law bookseller issued the first edition in 1731 and published numerous editions during his lifetime. Part I is organized by topic and then alphabetically. Topics include abridgments indexes tables; civil ecclesiastical and universal law; common law crown law; constitution crown and Parliament; courts; dictionaries; trade navigation; reports; statutes; and Irish and Scottish law books. Part II is prefaced by a historical account of English legal literature from the earliest times to the reign of George III. This edition consists of a reprint of Parts I and II of the 1788 edition and includes the uncommon supplement published in 1800. This edition continues Worrall's experiment begun in the 1782 edition of including observations by learned law writers in the annotation to some entries. This last development marked a positive step of the bare Bassett style of catalogue which Worrall had originally followed and which was to influence future bibliographies. With an index to each Part. An important indispensable reference. unknown

These three volumes collect most of the political judicial and literary writings of Levi Woodbury 1789-1851 an important New Hampshire jurist and statesman. Appointed by President Polk to fill the vacancy created by the death of Joseph Story he was an associate justice in the Taney Court from 1846 to his death in 1851. He usually sided with the majority during his tenure but his strong sympathy for states' rights provoked occasional dissents. He was generally proslavery and usually supported the majority's decisions on the contract clause. Although his influence was minimized by his brief tenure he was admired for his acute legal mind and sound reasoning. This reissue of his writings gives us a fine opportunity to reevaluate the assessment of his peers and enrich our understanding of the Taney Court. unknown

Attractive Smyth sewn blue cloth hardcover with gilt stamped front cover and spine. New. $125. Reprint of the third edition. It was common during the eighteenth century to promote the study of Roman and comparative law for its liberalizing effect on the student of the common law. Wood's New Institute was the best attempt to promote this goal. It went through four editions in 1704 1712 1721 and 1730 and was the standard Anglo-American treatise of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries and a well-thumbed reference for jurists who wished to add an element of civilian learning to their work such as Joseph Story. Wood also considers its role as an auxiliary to English law. As the title suggests it is not only a summary of Roman law adapted to the needs of students of English law but also a pioneering essay in comparative law. Wood pays some attention as well to Roman law's influence on the historical development of English law. Indeed he observes that "Fleta and Bracton would look very naked if every Roman lawyer should pluck away his sic feathers" ix. unknown
