Dated March 15 1825. 12.5" x 7.75" Michael Lykes and his wife Elizabeth daughter of Thomas Morford deceased appoint East Windsor attorney Elijah Davis. The lawyer is to represent them in selling certain lands in Middlesex County to which Elizabeth has claim as the only daughter and heir of Thomas Morford who inherited the land from his grandfather William Updike of Middlesex County by terms of a will dated November 22 1778. On the back of this first document one Andrew Rowan attests that Elizabeth came before him on August 15 1824 at which time he examined her without her husband and she agreed to give power-of-attorney to Davis. The second document dated at Lamberton on 21 June 1825 comprises several testimonials that Elizabeth is the daughter of Thomas Morford and Lucy Reed who "for many years lived together and cohabited as man and wife." Elizabeth Dye attests that she believes Morford and Reed were legally married. Sarah Reed Lucy's mother states that Lucy was married to Morford at age 19 without Sarah's consent and that they had a daughter named Elizabeth. Inserted in this document is the testimonial of John Smith of Lambertville NJ who states that he officiated at the marriage of Elizabeth and Michael a few years earlier believing that she was the daughter of Thomas Morford who was the son of Mrs. Elizabeth Story wife of Joseph Story of Story Farm. Also signing this document are Robert and Ann Taylor who attest to the lineage and Abraham Creque who was in the house when Thomas Morford and Lucy Reed lived as man and wife. unknown

Law's challenge of conventional piety and emphasis on Christian perfection directly influenced literary critic Samuel Johnson and historian Edward Gibbon as well as Cardinal John Henry Newman. John Wesley called it one of three books that accounted for his first "explicit resolve to be all devoted to God." Also Charles Wesley George Whitefield Henry Venn William Wilberforce and Thomas Scott each described reading the book as a major turning point in his life. More than simply a set of rules to live by Law's book examines what it means to lead a Christian life and criticizes the perversion of Christian tenets by secular and spiritual establishments. Proclaiming that God does not merely forgive our disobedience but directly calls us to obedience and to a life completely centreed in him he chides "If you will here stop and ask yourself why you are not as pious as the primitive Christians were your own heart will tell you that it is neither through ignorance nor inability but because you never thoroughly intended it." Law's prose is fresh and vivid as he illustrates the Christian life as one lived completely for God. His thoughts on prayer personal holiness stewardship pride and humility and service to the poor will resonate with contemporary readers. 191344167Springer New Mexico: Melvin W. Mills 1913. 1913. NEW MEXICO. First edition. 8 1/4" X 11" typed letter on Melvin W. Mills stationery dated March 20 1913. Mr. Mills describes the horses as being "range raised horses" that they want to dispose of right away. The horses have never been grain fed and some at first may not even eat hay. The horses range in size from 14 to 15 hands high and weigh between 750 and 950 pounds. Plus a lot of additional information pertaining to the horses. They would be willing to sell as follows: "We would sell a carlot of them at $45.00 all around. We would put into a corral 50 or 60 and let the purchaser take out 30 head at this quotation. We would take half cash and a note for the other half payable in 90 days if a creditable bank would assure us that the paper is good and that they would discount it. Our Home Ranch is here in Springer. These horses are out thirty or forty miles on other ranches. We could have them here at the Home Ranch in a few days if a buyer should want to come and see them with a prospect of making a sale. We are planning to ship to Sherman Texas or some other place in the next ten days if we do not sell the horses here." The letter is unsigned. The back side of the letter has printed livestock images. Faint fold creases and a few light wrinkles else a very good letter. Melvin W. Mills, 1913. unknown
