Intéressante lettre au roi Louis XVIII, alors en exil, afin de lui recommander Pierre-Charles Laurent de Villedeuil (1742-1828), contrôleur général des finances de Louis XVI. « Sire, M. de Villedeuil sollicite des bontés de votre majesté sa reconnaissance d'une grâce que lui avait accordé Louis 16 mais dont les traces se trouvent effacées. C'était l'élection en marquisat de ses terres de Villemenon et de Villedeuil. Ayant l'honneur d'être attaché à Monsieur [le futur Charles X], il a cru devoir s'enquérir de la protection et son Altesse Royale m'a chargé de vous adresser, Sire, la lettre que M. de Villedeuil prend la liberté d'écrire à votre majesté. Monsieur y en a joint une pour appuyer la demande. Tous les faits exposés dans sa lettre un ancien et fidèle serviteur du feu roi sont très [mot illisible], c'est moi qui ai obtenu le bon expédié et scellé des lettres patentes et je suis certain qu'elles ont été enregistrées dans les 3 cours de Paris. S'il parait difficile de donner dans ce moment-ci un titre loyal à M de Villedeuil, votre majesté peut lui faire connaître que son intention est, quand les circonstances le permettront, de faire revivre cette concession par de secondes lettres patentes qui en confirment les premières [fin difficile à lire] ». Patrick Colquhoun 1745-1820 was one of the founders of the River Thames Police and greatly influenced subsequent police forces. "As impressive as Colquhoun's salesmanship of the public police idea was his main contribution is recognized as the introduction of crime prevention or preventative policing as a fundamental principle to the English police system. His police were to be a deterrent to crime by their permanent presence on the Thames. He came to this conclusion through viewing policing as a science and in utilitarian fashion attempted to press that science into the service of the national political economy. He published two dozen treatises on a variety of social problems but the most significant is his A Treatise on the Police of the Metropolis." Author attribution from the BL catalogue. Following the appearance of these letters in the Times there appear to have been three versions of this title: the present one paginated as part of a larger compilation of pamphlets; another issue also in 1816 paginated 1-33; and a third issue with 19 pages and addressed to the Viscount Henry Addington Sidmouth formerly Prime Minister currently Secretary of State for the Home Department. An appeal for lighter and more consistent regulation of sales of alcoholic beverages in public-houses including taverns and hotels and an appeal for even handed applications of regulations and prosecutions in the courts. The author lays part of the blame for England's gin problem at the feet of the license system. John Thomas Barber Beaumont 1774-1841 was a British Army officer author painter early on he was miniaturist to the Duke of Clarence future King William II. Pamphlet removed from compilation; some leaves detached. Some light staining to a few leaves otherwise very good.
