pp, (4), 348. 12mo. Marbled edges. Modern full cloth binding. Early (1806) manuscript ownership of W. R. Broad. A nice clean and tight copy. An absolutely wonderful compendium of a broad range of facts, statistics, and historical events. Sort of a combination handy encyclopedia / Information Please Almanac / and Guinesses' Book of Records. Covers a wide range of topics beyond those mentioned in the title, like: history; accidents; battles; floods; oddities; royalty; politics; reference; statistics; law; diplomacy; wars; military; biography; economics; government; chronology; roads; inventions; architecture; religion; commerce; storms; earthquakes; records; etc. The 1806 ownership indicates that these were early examples of gift books, issued for the Christmas and New Year's trade. The supposed author, Philip Luckombe, was responsible for all sorts of interesting miscellaneous literature, including: 'A Concise History of the Origin an Progress of Printing' 1770. W144/Rear.

A famous essay (satire) in opposition to the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle (1748) which ended the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-1748). In Britain, George II and his ministers were seen by many as having conducted the war and the peace to the best advantage of Brunswick-Luneburg (of which George was Elector) rather than Britain. George and Britain did gain from the treaty in one respect: that one clause of it had finally compelled the French to recognize the Hanoverian succession to the British throne and expel the Jacobites from France. The ciphered name on the title and dedication are often taken to stand for Philip Dormer Stanhope, Earl of Chesterfield (1694-1773). Here, in pencil, is identified the likely dedicatee - the military Commander, John Lindsay, twentieth Earl Crawford (1702-1749). The same pencil hand identifies the anonymous author as Henry Fielding. This is unlikely to be correct. W129. Small Box 8
New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 206 p. Bargaining between Islam and Kemalism: An investigation of official Islam through Friday sermons. "The main objective of this book is to explore the Turkish state's attempt to regulate Islam through an analysis of the regulation of Friday sermons in Turkey. Drawing on the records of disciplinary measures implemented by the Presidency of Religious Affairs (PRA) and in-depth interviews conducted with imams in Turkey, the thesis argues that the Republic developed strategies to realize a state centralization of religion. This is corroborated by the high compliance rate of imams with the content of the sermons prepared by the PRA in the absence of serious inspection mechanisms until relatively recently. The complians of imams to the sermons delivered by the state implies that a distinct (nation-)statist disposition has been approved by the imams themselves as well, and hence that he republic has managed to create the 'republican' imams.".
