An absolutely wonderful compendium of a broad range of facts, statistics, and historical events. Sort of a combination handy encyclopedia / Information Please Almanac / and Guinesses' Book of Records. Covers a wide range of topics beyond those mentioned in the title, like: history; accidents; battles; floods; oddities; royalty; politics; reference; statistics; law; diplomacy; wars; military; biography; economics; government; chronology; roads; inventions; architecture; religion; commerce; storms; earthquakes; records; etc. The 1806 ownership indicates that these were early examples of gift books, issued for the Christmas and New Year's trade. pp. (4), 138. Very foxed. Some leave brittle or with slight loss. Title rebacked, and almost detached. Later plain boards binding. 12 mo. 170 mm. Falsely attributed to Alexander Hamilton, this was a powerful attack on Monroe's views concerning U.S. policy towards France. Uriah Tracy (1755-1807) was a Federalist politician of much note. A lawyer in Litchfield many years, he served in the Massachusetts Legislature (1788-1793), and as a Representative in Congress (1793-1796), and then as Senator (1796-1807). The brief background of this scarce little pamphlet is: Monroe had been removed from his office as Minister to the French Republic by President Washington for refusing to defend Jay's Treaty (negotiated with Great Britain) against French objections. He then tried to explain his actions in a popular book entitled 'A View on the Conduct of the Executive on the Foreign Affairs of the United States, Connected with the Mission of the French Republic.' This Federalist answer to Monroe was issued anonymously, and was frequently attributed to Alexander Hamilton. It too, was very popular and widely read. Evans 34676; Howes T-326; Sabin 96422. Bon exemplaire.
