1997213757New York: Aperture 1997. Hardcover. New. In shrinkwrap. Quarto. Hardcover. Green cloth in gret jacket with white titles and b&w photo. 104 pages : illustrations ; 30 cm. In 1953 the renowned American photographer Paul Strand who was then living in France suggested to Italian screenwriter Cesare Zavattini that they do a book together about a small town in Italy a town that would reveal the spirit of a people. Strand asked Zavattini to choose a village with the elusive "special quality" he sought. Zavattini knew just such a village: his own birthplace of Luzzara in the Po Valley. The collaboration of these two remarkable artists resulted in the classic book Un Paese. Published in Italian in 1955 and now available for the first time in the English language Un Paese captures in photographs and in spoken testimony the essential experience of daily life in Luzzara. It presents a series of intense portraits graceful landscapes and images of everyday objects. Paul Strand's photographs are carefully distilled deeply powerful; they contain the flavors and the rhythms of an entire culture crystallized in a single village. Zavattini successfully synthesizes text and image aligning with the new cinematic trend of the day a movement known as Italian neorealism. Their Luzzara is an ordinary village neither overly picturesque nor greatly unusual yet it is a town sustained by a grounded humanity and a profound love for the land by its people. 7481Undated circa 1837. 'London W. Spooner 377 Strand'. Dimensions of print roughly 17.5 x 13.5 cm. On original grey paper windowpane mount 28 x 23 cm. Engraved label 2.5 x 11 cm beneath the print with a couple of remarque-style illustrations. The print itself is good although a little aged and spotted; the margins and mount being rather more heavily affected. Attractive and unusual item the image changing when held up to the light. Two soldiers are shown dwarfed by the high ceiling of the chapel which is decked with brightly-coloured flags. When held to the light the chapel is filled with the mourning congregation. Scarce. There is no reference to this particular Spooner print on the net. The dioramic print was introduced to England in 1821 by the French photographer Joseph Daguerre. Spooner published at least thirty-seven of his 'Protean Views'. Undated [circa 1837]. 'London W. Spooner 377 Strand'. unknown

Signed and dated at foot: 'Leman Rede/ 31. May 1841'. Addressed at bottom left: 'To Mrs. Keeley.' The poem clearly an impromptu effort and not of the highest quality reads: 'Writing Faustus sad fate I a blood vessel broke; Last week's work was sufficient to rend it; But Keeley came: sang - Keeley look'd & she spoke And her tones are sufficient to mend it: Take my thanks & God send you may yet live to see A piece from my pen that is worthy of thee.' Signed and dated 'Leman Rede/ | 31. May 1841'. unknown
