(Jack) Douglas, Bob Kennedy, Tom McGrath, A. McKeown, Gerry McCullough, Bill Wilson, and Lloyd Robinson. McCullough is mentioned in the book as a Lake seaman who went deepsea during the war and was, at time of publication, a full-time organizer for the International Transport Workers Federation and responsible for tracking down ships violating basic conditions and bringing them into line. His predecessor was Tom McGrath. Shotguns, Mounties, American gangsters, the courts and government - all were used by the shipowners to destroy the Canadian Seaman's Union. What was this union that provoked such an unprecedented attack? Combining rigorous research with the stirring recollections of the people who lived the events, Jim Green weaves a gripping story from the union's birth on the Great Lakes in the mid-1930s through the 1949 world-wide strike to save the Canadian merchant fleet. Roy. 8vo., First Edition thus, with numerous photographs and illustrations throughout, endpapers lightly browned, some light spotting as usual; original pictorial blue cloth blocked and lettered in black, gilt back, bevelled boards, red sprinkled edges, lower hinge cracked (but binding entirely sound), a very good, bright, clean copy. Contains the first appearance of Doyle's 'Round the Fire' stories II-VII. No. II is 'The Story of the Man with the Watches' (illustrated by Frank Craig); No. III is 'The Story of the Lost Special' (illustrated by Max Cowper). These two stories are widely recognised by Holmesians as the two most important 'lost' Holmes adventures. Both stories feature an unnamed amateur reasoner clearly intended by Doyle to be identified by his readers as Holmes himself. These two tales and their fellows were collected and published as 'Round the Fire Stories' in 1908. UNCOMMON IN THIS CONDITION. See Green & Gibson, p.409.

Presentation copy from John Burns to Marjorie Lockton, signed and dated 1933 with a note about having a sore arm from billiards. John burns was a labor agitator at the turn of the century London, arrested and prosecuted for sedition and aquitted in 1886, sentenced for participating in a riot in Trafalgar square then later elected member of Parliament in 1892, 1895, 1900 & 1906.
