While it was Martin Luther's translation of the Bible in 1534 the New Testament translation in 1522 that became the standard for German readers there were actually 14 earlier version in German before him. The Committee was formed by Department Store Employees Union Local 1100 Janitors no. 87 Elevator Operators no. 117 and Joint Board of Culinary Workers - all AFL unions. Local 1100 was a majority female union with a large number of women present on their militant picket lines. The enthusiasm of a son of Edwina Booth Workman suggested the boy of the group. It was written in 1901. Hamlin Garland. Inscribed for the Bookfellows Dec. 3 - 1936." The Bookfellows was the Chicago based publishing and bibliophilic enterprise overseen by Garland's friends the Seymours.
